@activ I think that the sheriff and Juliette had a theory: The outside is safe and the cleaners die because the suit runs out of oxygen. I guess removing the helmet was supposed to keep the sheriff alive and when that didn't work it meant their theory failed.
@itsikg it happens so fast that I think it was not oxygen but poison instead.

I’m confused why the characters seem to think the sherif dying is proof he was wrong. the entire point was that what you see out the camera is not to be trusted.
