Barry: Season 4

4x08 wow

I may have my hesitancies with this final season, but the finale of Barry ended things on a good note for me. Yes it was rushed and a bit underwhelming in that sense, there probably could've been a couple more episodes or at least more time earlier in the season dedicated to fleshing out this ending, but the way the story wraps up nearly perfectly exemplifies the tone and ideas of the show. Even in death, Barry's presence in the lives of these people have changed them for the worse. The final scene is a perfect balance in dark comedy as we see how the world is going to remember Barry and Cousineau, it strikes a very hard balance between being just as funny as it is unsettling, and that's what Barry has been all about. It also manages to comment on the current state of media in our world and how media corporations profit off the lives of serial killers in the form of limited series, movies, etc. These projects also seem to glorify or sympathize such people, which we see all throughout this show and especially in that final scene. Barry's fate feels pretty inevitable, he escaped it for some time but inevitably his past was going to catch up to him and there was only one way his story would end, no matter how much he kid himself. In this way the ending actually feels pretty similar to the ending of Succession. And as a side note, with those two shows plus Ted Lasso all ending around the same time, it might take me some time to fully process all of these endings and recover emotionally. What a great run of TV from all of those shows, including Barry, which should be remembered as one of the best modern TV series and perhaps the best execution of dark comedy out there.
