God Bless America 2012

Every year there are a huge number of movies that fly right under the radar of the average movie fan. movies that are great but just not that well known.

There are plenty of movie gems out there and hopefully this list will help you find some.

Feel free to submit new movies in the comments below.

This list contains movies/documentaries and short films. The list was originally created on IMDb. http://goo.gl/gHles

In case you need some ideas for a movie night. Or just something really stupid/amazing/both to watch. All sorts of genres represented here, but with a skew toward action/horror/sci-fi and some comedy.

Note: This isn't strictly BAD movies, there are some (underappreciated) greats in here, or maybe just some movies you might have forgotten about. At the very least they're all interesting.

Movies rated 8, 9 or 10.

Two times a year—at the halfway point and during list-making season in November—I send out a list of “significant” movies to the film staff so they can try to see as many as possible before our Year In Film feature. It’s just a simple checklist, presented in the order each film was released theatrically in New York City. The idea is to give our writers time to catch up and give relative obscurities like The Arbor (last year’s No. 13 on our conjoined Best Of The Year list) the same collective consideration as more widely heralded efforts like The Tree Of Life. In the interest of transparency—and recommending a bunch of movies we love—I’m making the halftime list public this year so our readers can play along at home. A few caveats:
- My staff inevitably comes back to me with omissions, and I suspect there will be many in the comments below. We’ll add the big ones to our year-end checklist.
- Normally, the list goes out without categories. The ones below, particularly “The Essentials,” are a reflection of my taste and priorities. Mileage will definitely vary.
- Within the categories, titles are still listed in order of release in NYC through the weekend of July 13th, not in order of preference.
- Overall, the momentum from last year’s embarrassment of cinematic riches has continued into 2012, so now’s the time to get those queues in order.

The Essentials: From "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" to "Django Unchained"
Hollywood: The System Works!: From "The Grey" to "Lés misérables"
Auteur Obligations: From "Crazy Horse" to "Killing Them Softly"
Notable Documentaries: From "West of Memphis" to "Jiro Dreams of Sushi"
Indie Curiosities: From "Return" to "Promised Land"
Imported Goods: From "Declaration of War" to "Sister"

This isn't a complete list as that'd be pretty impossible and it's probably subjective, but the items on this list are tv shows of movies that I think you should watch so you have a pretty high chance of knowing what people are talking about when they start talking about visual media. This is an eclectic list - you won't find many places that put American Pie and Amelie on the same page, but this isn't ranked, it's not one genre, and while some of the items listed are culturally significant in the sense of high culture modern-masterpieces, some are slightly ironic but still just as cultural, but rather more of the popular culture strain. If you watch the items on this list, next time somebody quotes "...No I'm not, I'm talking about Anne Frank. She was deaf, dumb and blind." "No she wasn't. Helen Keller was deaf, dumb and blind.", you'll be able to laugh. When somebody says "I'm Batman" in a really gruff voice, or jokingly suggests taking a neighbour's gnome around the world and sending them photos of it, you'll know exactly what they're referring to. That is the intention of this list.

5

IMDb movies from 7 to 7.4 rating (min. votes = 10k, min year = 2006)

2

Comedy films that sway outside the mainstream. Dark, strange, unusual, outright bizare and so bad they're good. I have also thrown in a couple of not so strange comedies from independent studios that deserve a mention. Adding more every day.

464

Dark comedies where a dead body proves to be a very pesky problem, mistaken identities often lead to mistaken kidnappings and murders, and some deaths happen to be just freak accidents...

The term "Lolita" refers to an under-aged, seductive girl, who often becomes the obsession of a much older man.

Originating from the character in the popular Vladimir Nabokov novel of the same name, multiple films have taken on some kind of variation of her and Humbert Humbert’s relationship.

Among these films that explore this complex from different angles, which is your favorite title?
