If you're going to remake Deep Impact, at least have the balls to call it that. It's not terrible, but it's not as good as the original.
Since the beginning, there wasnt one moment where I wasnt anxious. Good disaster movie!
We've seen this film 2012 times and the day after tomorrow it's not impossible that there will be yet another geostorm in a teacup.
But the first two acts of Greenland are more suspense than disaster and the film is all the better for it. Director Ric Roman Waugh does a great job of building tension around how people act in the face of a world threatening event and the sense of urgency rubs off on the viewer.
Sadly, though, the final act slips into the clichés one would expect from a film of this genre, but not badly enough that it erases the good work that precedes it.
Yes it has been done before, yes the budget is clearly a bit lower than others, yes the usual hoops are jumped through but there are also a couple of interesting morale and shocking moments. Not always well judged but also a surprise to see them addressed in a popcorn movie like this.
Easy escapist entertainment with its heart in the right place.
I guess if you seen one movie about the world ending you see them all. Predictable a lot of action not necessarily believable action but it's really good for surround sound listening to stuff explode
Can anyone explain how a diabetic kid with 7 days insulin supply can live 9 months? Insulin is overrated huh?
As the other commenters have noted, this film has been there, done that, gotten the T-shirt, and is now using same said T-shirt to Mr. Miyagi (wax on..., wax off) the car. But, much like Milla Jojovich and the T-Virus, you kinda know what to expect with a Gerard Butler movie. Either swords and sandals, or big guns, big storms, or generally something big blowing up stuff, REAL GOOD!
Minus 1 "Cinema Sin" for Morena Baccarin, because, er,.. well, Morena Baccarin, but adding one back for Butlers character being fool headed enough to cheat on her. Come on son!!!
Multiple "Sins" for the NOT ever so subtle "wokeness" which made sure all the cringy, creepy, uncooperative, pseudo-evil, feminine hygiene nozzles they encountered were melanin deficient folks, and all the kind, helpful self sacrificing ones (save the pilot at the end) were those less likely to need high SPF sunscreen. Seriously, once you notice it, it's kind of laughable, until it's not.
And of course, the time frame given for nature clearing up an "extinction level event" GREATER than the one that killed the dinosaurs, is a bit "optimistic" at best. But hey it's 2020 Hollywood, and happy endings are in short supply of late.
Not as bad as a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, and, since you've seen it all before, you can multitask if you need to and still enjoy the movie.
This was better than I thought it was going to be. I was surprised by how much I cared what happened to the people and the directing was well above par. Gerard Butler is an underrated actor and this movie will keep your attention nicely. One recommendation... you'll have to decide to unmask this text... stop the film just after the fast flashback of life memories as the family are sitting on the floor in the bunker.
As disaster movies go, Greenland was definitely better than average, but not quite on par with its spiritual predecessor, Deep Impact. Hard to top that one, but Greenland's strength was that it made an honest attempt to get us to care about the main family, even though they were of the rich and entitled segment of society, and as such, were chosen survive to help rebuild society after the comet destroyed the earth. The movie was mostly successful in that regard. Some of the plot details were completely implausible, but that's to be expected in a movie like this, but most importantly, I was entertained and engaged the whole time, so I would call it a successful flick. Plus, it's always good to see Scott Glenn pop up on the screen.
Yeah you thought the comet was the antagonist but turns out it was the family the whole time.
Like, everyone who helps them dies, they run around assuming everyone knows who they are and where their other is at.
"Greenland" doesn't really do anything new with its apocalyptic scenario. A comet hurtles toward Earth and people do good things and bad things as the end times approach.
It did make me ponder how horrible the days leading up to an extinction-level event would be. In fact, I'm pretty convinced the thing you would need to worry about the least is the wall of fire or water hurtling toward you.
This was just bad. All of it.
It brought nothing new. Only stupid decisions, unrealistic situations, bad filters, barely decent acting, same old uninsteresting "family"...
Let me know when you create an original disaster movie, USA.
At this point i'm pretty sure an "after" Clarke movie would have been more interesting than this "before".
Movie for not smart audience and with typical Hollywood agenda/propaganda, like: father is bad, mother is good; all blacks are good, most whites are bad.
Well I’ve not seen a good disaster movie in awhile and thought this was not a disaster and pretty decent with lots good action going on and all cast did well and lets just forget his film geostorm that was terrible.
Entertaining, same as 2012, but with a different air
Credit where it is due, this is a very solid disaster movie. It felt very real, very authentic to how the situations would play out.
Rather than going for huge CGI, it relies a little more on the human impact and the fear, uncertainty and chaos that would occur. And that is a wise choice from the creators.
I was 30 minutes in and wondering how another 90 minutes could play out... But it does, and it does it very well.
I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns this offered. It felt grittily real. And there were leaps of faith in believability but they weren't too far to go.
Well done.
8/10
I love apocalyptic flicks and this was a fun watch
I would be better off dead
“Why did your phone get it and not ours??”
Whoa what is this? A disaster AND Gerard Butler movie that is good? It can’t be. 2020 is really something else. I had to think about what I like about disaster movies: A Disaster that is somewhat believable or at least the scientists make it sound real, not get distracted by mediocre/bad graphics, and it needs to not have horrible acting. Greenland passed the test and after this year I totally believe how people would act if something like this happened.
easily the best disaster movie I seen. feels so real
This was not a disaster movie, it was a family drama which the mother looses the child the father looses the mother they all unite we then have flashbacks of their old happiness and in-between maybe a rock falls out of the sky. See "Deep Impact" instead.
Also they should do some research before saying about E.L.E.
The size suppose it was bigger than the one killed the dinosaurs. But 6 months later life is back sun is shining, and birds are chiming. No decades of ice, no ashes or no sun, you know the regular extinction stuff. So cliche that must have a happy unrealistic ending.
THE WACPINE OF 'GREENLAND'
WRITING: 5
ATMOSPHERE: 6
CHARACTERS: 6
PRODUCTION: 7
INTRIGUE: 5
NOVELTY: 4
ENJOYMENT: 6
The Good:
I like the grounded take on things. Gerard Butler makes for a believable, likeable family father; Roger Dale Floyd his adorable son and Morena Baccarin his soon-to-be-ex who he has given up on. His relationship with the people surrounding him feels genuine, which also makes the story as a whole easier to accept.
The direction and editing depict the turmoil and uncertainty encircling our characters simply, but efficiently. These chaotic sequences of death and destruction are rare, but work well.
The performances are all fine, with the actors clearly going all in to capture the despair and fear their characters are feeling.
The mother's physical and emotional journey is the best part of this film and could easily have been made into a film of its own.
The Bad:
We jump to the major disaster very quickly, with little to no build-up. We hardly learn anything about the characters before all shit goes down, and things seem to escalate a bit too quickly to fully immerse the audience.
We get to the crisis and the chaos following it so quickly that it never hits with the force it’s meant to. The different emotions, the sense of not knowing what is going on and the fear and chaos have no time to evolve because we enter the crisis with no build-up.
The mystery of the people being selected and transported away take centre stage early on, which means that the focus moves away from the disaster aspect of the film. The prolonged airport sequence goes on and one without arriving at a conclusion. If you come in expecting a Roland Emmerich-inspired shitfest, you will be sorely disappointed.
The script seems somewhat unfocused as if doesn't quite know what kind of a story it wants to tell and how it wants to arrive there. The central characters are thrown from one situation with strangers to another and while we are constantly reminded of the overarching chaos and mystery, we never seem to get to the point. It doesn't help that the film introduces a streak of pointless supporting characters, who have little to no impact on the main characters and are disposed of pretty quickly.
It is a shame that this film fails to avoid the tiresome genre tropes and clichés that seem to be an inevitable part of every single disaster film. The had all the opportunities to come up with something fresh, but that's not what we end up with.
Another problem is that the script fails to satisfyingly explain what is going on and why, and there seems to be no effort from the rest of the world to do something. We get these constant new TV reports that just show a lot of death and destruction, but they don't explain the disaster sufficiently. That's the downside of not having a scientist character in the lead.
The final act is unnecessarily crammed as the film runs out of time before getting the opportunity to properly set up a satisfying ending. The resulting ending feels tacked on at the last minute.
The Ugly:
When the world is about to end, you go driving, driving and some more driving.
WACPINE RATING: 5.57 / 10.00 = 3 stars
I have watched this movie with different names over and over again in different years. It is just another disaster movie. This time people are running away from a comet which is visiting Earth.
But when I saw Butler is on the menu, tbh I expected more. Unfortunately, he is just another hero who is saving the day. I wanted some more fight, some more action but nah. He is just running from one side to another like Baccarin. He and she got 5/10 from me like they care. Anyway I can not the pass the idiot child who is causing all trouble and action.
Movie 6/10 timekiller...
I wasn't expecting a lot from this movie, maybe some mid-level doomsday story. So my dissapointment is rather low.
This movie tries to combine a family-drama with said doomsday scenario and it actually works at first. The build up is good, you go through the different stages, like the selection and leaving your friends behind, and you wonder how you would react in this situation. Because something like this is quite possible. I found this very engaging and the athmosphere was really dire.
But right around the middle they seem to be running out of ideas. Things like the kidnapping of the child or the fight that broke out on the truck you could smell coming right away. It could have served for some good character developement but it was basically just filling run time. Especially the accidental killing by John was but an afterthought. The movie just rolls along for quite some time with both of them trying to re-connect and it's ticking boxes along the way. There are no suprises. Towards the end it becomes better again, which suggest a lot of the middle could have left out. But we need to clear the reason for them breaking up so we get that in a short conversation. Didn't do anything for me.
At the end, in the bunker, you get the feeling again that this was all for nothing and that they will die. I would have applauded had they had the guts to do it. But, since this is a movie, there has to be a happy end, and they don't. Here is where it becomes a fairy tale or fantasy, where Hollywood takes over.
Mere hours after a nine mile asteroid smashes into Western Europe, they all come out of the bunker and the sun keeps shining. Those things are called Planet Killers for a reason as there would have been darkness for decades. Ask the dinosaurs. Oh, right.
Yeah, I know, that's what movie's do but it adds up.
Everyone is always so eager to help our protagonists while at the same time hundreds if not thousands are left to their own devices. And, boy, Dodge really build tough trucks.
Anyway, alltogether just decent with a big hang-over in the middle. The CGI is pretty good though. Not something I would recommend but also not something I label as "stay away".
Good potential, bad execution. Fife points for the movie plus an extra for the looks.
It’s your run-of-the-mill end of the world disaster movie. Every twist and turn is predictable as we’ve all seen it done a thousand times.
That said, if you go in expecting it to be exactly what it is, without any ridiculous expectations that it might somehow be something different, then you’ll probably enjoy this movie - I know I did.
The acting from our beloved Gerard and Morena was, as always, on point and made the experience much more believable (not that being more believable is particularly tricky).
It was nice to see that a couple of birds survived the apocalypse, regardless of the fact that mankind completely hung them out to dry.
Was not expecting that to be that good. Really gripping story and the disaster scenes were epic. Showed the bad of humanity backed into a corner and it showed the wonderful parts too.
Huge boom movie - bass was crazy
I really enjoyed this movie because it really dug deep into how important you are to the survival of the planet (If you are lucky enough to have a special skill, you can survive).
I'M a delivery driver (I'M SCREWED)....
But I really enjoyed this movie it captured my attention.
well done.
What a ride ........
Enjoyed this movie
Not the disaster I expected it to be, considering Butler's last venture into this genre was Geostorm, and his reteaming here with the director of the awful 'Has Fallen' films. It's a more serious-minded affair than most - think Deep Impact and not Armaggedon - and is all the better for it. There are some silly moments, but its still tense and engrossing, without the need for overblown spectacle.
I had high hopes being a fan of Butler and Baccarin but this move was all over the place. For the longest time it seemed to forget it was even an end of the world disaster movie going from bad plot like to bad plot line with very little in the way of excitement or end of the world imagery most people are after in these movies. Terrible movie!
I didn't have high hopes, expecting it to be crap like geostorm..but i actually enjoyed it, it's more of what will the family do in this doomsday situation.
give it a go,you wont hate it
The trailer looked so promising, but don't be fooled. Don't bother watching this.
I put myself through 2 hours of this.... for THAT ending... Definitely not Gerard Butler's finest hour.
I liked what they propose, here you cannot stop the asteroid and only a few can be saved and they focus on the family. The scene of the house with the neighbors is brutal.
Nothing bad. There are moments when the argument falters. More dramatic than action. I have cried three times. Twice more than in Deep Impact. Respect :)
Wow! This movie was so incredibly thrilling. It kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Very well made too so I can easily recommend this to anyone who likes a good disaster film.
Not bad not great. really nothing new except I feel that for what I thought was an apocalypse movie was more of a look how many bad people can get to a family trying to get to safety.
It is decent, but you can get away with just watching the trailer.
Finally, an apocalyptic end-of-the-world movie that doesn't involve zombies. I'm not even going to waste my time looking at other reviews because movies - like all art - are purely subjective; there will be those who hate this movie and those who, like myself, thoroughly enjoy it. One of the biggest factors in my enjoying Greenland however is simply the fact that "it COULD happen" . We all know the end of the world will happen: one way or another, humanity will cease to exist. Give Joe Biden another 4 years (god forbid) and he'll make sure of it. Whether it's through global nuclear warfare, an asteroid, climate change, whatever… humanity will, one day, face extinction. Deal with it. This particular film shows the brutal near-reality of that happening and plays it to perfection. Of course you have to disengage your brain and watch this for the entertainment purposes it was designed for: this isn't a documentary so please don't nitpick all the trivial details. It's a MOVIE. Enjoy it. It's a good movie.
one word: DISTRESSING :exploding_head::dizzy_face::dizzy::dizzy_face:
In my opinion it is a good movie
Hard to believe that didn't know about the sons illness
Some event that could have been avoided like the bracelet
am I the only one hoping for a catastrophe movie to end badly for everyone involved?
Who needs Carl when we can burn down everything ourselves?
Not a great movie. Everyone knows the history, cheap budget, but to be lazy in the sofa, on Sunday afternoon its enough.
I know this movie is predictable, the characters aren’t that bright and this type of movie has been done over and over…. But I liked it….. great so see other disasters that we aren’t involved in and are fake….. no mention of COVID… yay!
Hands down, one of the worst movies I’ve (partially) seen… stopped watching after the breach at the airfield. So many unbelievably STUPID decisions by the main characters. I was rooting for them to die so the stupid would stop.
Geez. I went into this expecting an easy popcorn movie, but this thing was tense, especially the first half! I think they could've ended the movie a bit better though. Overall, much better than expected
About 6.5 but I just couldn't give it 7. The story just didn't felt fleshed out enough.
It would have been nicer to make this a mini series and also the "happy ending" just fel a little off...
Not very good. Didn't even have the special effects you expect from this genre.
A typical made for streaming piece of "entertainment", so middle of the road you can see the white lines.
The performances of the main cast were decent, but some of the supporting cast suffered from stunned mullet expressions and acting at times.
The movie did have some decent scenes but these were drowned out by the bad - a hackneyed, cliched plot, the story line creating some frankly unbelievable moments and making people behave the exact opposite as any sane person would for "dramatic" effect. Sadly these moments of madness were too stark and so often pulled you out of the movie, spoiling the good elements.
Whilst the premise was good it has been done much better elsewhere. Still, apart from time it's not like we paid for it as such.
I'm not really sure why but this movie kept me on the edge of my seat almost the whole time, apart from the beginning. Nothing ground breaking new story wise but I still I enjoyed it.
First 30-45 min were very good... After that it lost my interest
There is a whole lot of drama around the coveted wristbands, including a man getting killed and a child being abducted, and in the end nobody cared about them to grant access to the bunker.
This is a remarkably accurate depiction of American bureaucracy.
Honestly, massive surprise. I fear people won't watch this because Geostorm is a thing that happened. However, Greenland (possibly also not helped by its not exactly exciting title) is a genuinely well made film. I kept waiting for it to descend into disaster film nonsense and it just didn't. So much so, I almost didn't realise we were at the end of the film when we got there because I was expecting something different to happen. I put this on as a 'popcorn flick' but was gripped throughout. The tension that runs through it is superbly well done. I see its been tagger as thriller as a genre on here, rightly so.
Comet hits Earth with Unemotional Impact.
& Scott Glenn does some acting for 5 minutes.
Anybody know why Greenland would be safe???
If just there were as many meteor scenes as bad choices were made, it would have been a better film. But overall, a fair disaster movie.
Greenland AKA The Luckiest Family Alive
The whole trip is astronomically unbelievable. An enjoyable film, but daft.
Finally a decent natural disaster movie. Of course they couldn't help themselves to put a dysfunctional family at its core, but at least this one wasn't completely out of hope.
I am a bit worn out with the diaster genre, but this is worth watching to kill a few hours.
The formula for this type of film is saturated.
Surprisingly gripping and well made. Since it’s a Gerald Butler movie. He is an under-rated actor that usually doesn’t have the best taste in movies.
It’s almost like the screenplay from 2012 was edited to be more logical. Though there’s still plenty of disaster movie cliches. Like families fighting to reunite.
Just so you know you don't get the Greenland and Canada it's a whole other freaking country the continuity of this movie was terrible. Gerald Butler is done way better movies this was a major disappointment for me. Especially when they get trying to go to Greenland saying it's in Canada it's not in Canada it's a whole other country on the other side of the world
Briliant - a must see!!
2 hours of people just being bloody awful to each other. About as enjoyable as a kick in the gonads
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Greenland’:
I’m in awe of how fantastic this film was. This is what every disaster film should aspire to be. One of the best I’ve seen in a very, very long time. Nearly perfect pacing. Great acting. Nothing cheesy. Kudos.
It’s a tragedy that I couldn’t see this in a theater with a crowd. It would’ve been a thrilling cinematic experience.
Not one moment of this film was wasted or filler. Every moment contributed to the next. And every moment contributed to my anxiety. As it should have.
Bonus Thought: The mirror of humanity here was truly terrifying.
Depressed and scared the bejesus out of me.
Good stuff. Never felt bored.
Ended as hopefully as one could considering the premise.
Butler should do more of this rather than those presidential cr#p movies.
The family survived to face a new world.
These end of the world scenarios are all of a type, despite this there was some built in suspense here. Interest was largely held for the full runtime with a few silly moments thrown in; such as the desperate mother and sun hunt tent by tent....
On balance very entertaining.
Omg, Allison is made so dumb I was furious the whole movie!
Not a bad movie, predicable but also watchable. How about a Greenland 2 The Rebuild
Good acting and special effects, but quite senseless and shallow plot. Also, the characters could've had some more depth (let alone the dialogue). It's one of those movies I'll watch only once, but still pretty ok and even slightly enjoyable disaster flick.
Not a bad disaster movie! Though I like those who focus on the event itself as well. This one only focused on the drama of seeking shelter and whatnot.
For a 'Disaster' movie, this was pretty good! Totally enjoyed it! 7/10
This is probably one of my all time favorite movies!
Morena is amazing but Gerad is a disaster. And the drama is this manages to be less intense than the family drama in San Andreas
Devastating movie. I hope we never see this happen in our time. So scary. :(
The Ending was poo poo!
good movie thought....just go and enjoy
I don't know what I was expecting, maybe a good action movie but we were just disappointed.a movie night wasted if you ask me .
Didn't live up to the trailer, but what movie does? I thought it was ok, worth a watch. Yes, we've seen it before, but what movie haven't we seen before? Butler wasn't at his finest, but none of the actors were, including Glenn. This movie wasn't bad, just wasn't great. In 2020, what more can you expect?
An okay movie in the mist of others just like it. Starts strong, then begins to falter before coming to a conclusion.
why were the blunt of the impacts just in North America. -- Russia has a huge land mass and prime location for impacts. --
Atleast we know people will destroy earth before any comet can. Great movie tho
A great one time movie to watch, CGI were mediocre at best and the ending was..ok-ish..but not boring!
I really liked this movie.
I'm gonna be as vague as I can possibly be here, but if you decide to watch it, stop watching the movie at the 1:50:56 mark and let that be the end of the movie for you.
the actual end of the movie sucked! It's a world-ending disaster movie. You don't need to ruin the whole film with a happy, everything is going to be back to normal vibes at the end. a complete waste
Better than average disaster movie, although they still did some stupid things on their way to 'safety.' In the end was it all worth it?
What will the world be like after a catastrophe of that magnitude?
I'd just grab a chair a cigar and get drunk while watching the lightshow.
7.5/10
this is pretty great cuz it feels all too real. But 'the kid' how the f is he still alive? Not that I don't like the kid, he's aight but just for continuity purposes, how?
Well directed, nicely photographed and surprisingly good, but you've seen it all before.
Will there ever be a disaster movie in which "the kid" doesn't have an illness?
Really enjoyed this one. Suspense all the way through. More focus on a family trying to survive the end of the world than just the end of the world.
Nice Movie, some good actions, for the gender it's well done . Great actors. I recommend this movie
The movie is amazing! I'm so glad they surrived.

I gave this an extra star based on the fact that everyone in the movie is so dumb just like the people I see outside everyday.
