WOW HOLY WOW
THIS MOVIE IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME AMAZING, NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. THE VFX ARE SPECTACULAR REALLY TOP QUALITY AND THE GORE IS SENSATIONAL WHICH IS THE REASON HORROR IS MY SECOND FAVOURITE THING LIKE EVER WITH MCU BEING MY ULTIMATE FAVOURITE.
THIS IS A PROPER HORROR MOVIE WITH ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING STORIES I HAVE SEEN
IN A VERY VERY LONG TIME.
JUST WHEN I THOUGHT THESE KIND OF
AWESOME BRUTAL MOVIES WERE
DEAD AND DONE
ESPECIALLY IN THIS SJW, PANDERING TO
AGENDAS, WOKE SNOWFLAKE WORLD
WE HAVE TO SUFFER IN TODAY,
BUT NO THEN THIS KICK ASS ENTERTAINING
BEAUTY LIKE THIS COMES A LONG.
I'M SEEING THINGS IN THIS MOVIE AND IDEAS
I HAVE NEVER SEEN IN ANY OTHER FLICKS AND FOR THAT I DEFINITELY APPLAUD IT.
THANK-YOU JAMES WAN FOR THIS
TRULY SPECIAL AND VERY VERY
ENTERTAINING MOVIE.
10/10 SUPER AWESOME
Final Thought:
I loved the sisters in this and funny enough
I couldn't stand Annabelle
In Annabelle but I absolutely loved her in this,
She is one hella of an actress and I have definitely found a new love and respect for her and for James for that matter especially after creating this Masterpiece and I look forward to seeing Annabelle and James in future HORROR projects.
HELLA YEAH
Double thumbs up
And 5 star rating
"WE HAVE TO CUT OUT THE CANCER."
Hear me out...this movie is actually really good. Yes, it's CAMPY and some parts are stupid, suspend your disbelief, but the jump scares are legit, the scenes are tense, the effects are really good, the music is great and the cinematography, just wow.
Madison is pregnant, living with her husband, who we quickly find out is abusive, so in a moment of calm as he goes downstairs, she locks the door and stays in their room for the night. Unfortunately, an entity is in the house with them and it brutally murders her husband and then attacks her, killing her baby. The crime is reported to police, but shortly after Madison starts seeing deaths as they are happening. the police think she's crazy, but they can't deny it when they find the first murder victim.
This was such an unexpected film for 2021. I expected it to be another generic demonic possession or supernatural film but really, the story was so good. There are some really creative filming techniques. The acting in parts is really good, other parts its a bit shit - very much Youtube horror movie vibes. But the dialogue in the tense scenes was so believable, my favourites being the scene where the detective sees the killer scaling down the fire escape and chases after them and the scene in the holding cell where Madison opens her own skull up. I think my enjoyment of this film was boosted by the good viewing experience (10 people in the cinema, about 5 of them left before the movie even started and never came back).
There were some missed opportunities, I think, especially in the scene where the old man is lying down for bed and the red light can be seen under the bed - if the blood had flown out over the edge of the bed or through the mattress that would have been such a great shot. Plus, there were a few logical leaps that don't exactly make sense given the outcome of the story - this being why did the sofa seat have an indentation at the start when the monster is not invisible? Why are none of the psychic powers/experiments really explained? How come Madison can manipulate electricity? Where are the other people who were interred at that facility? And why can Sidney just enter the old facility - it's not patrolled by guards?
The characters are so charming and have quite well-developed through the course of the movie. I actually loved Sidney so much, she was so caring and real. I thought Kakoa was so badass (and also kind of hot?) and the dynamic with Regina felt like a deliberate play on good/bad cop/tired detective over this shit.
The music in this film is particularly noteworthy and atmospheric. It's overall such a great soundtrack. I'm so glad I saw this, do not miss it. Go in expect it to be kind of poor but please be wowed.
I watched this last night and I'm still reeling.
What an absolute dumpster fire.
Did James Wan owe someone money?
The acting was shocking. Annabelle Wallis was terrible. No films for you. And wtf was with Jacqueline McKenzie, this maybe the worst performance I've seen her give. I honestly thought during the opening scenes that any moment they were going to say cut and we see they were making a cheap TV movie. Her performance in the scene right before the opening credits where she yells "cut out the cancer" practically down the barrel of the camera is something that will keep me up at night wondering if she thought "nailed it. I'll be in my trailer"
The guy playing the male cop made me annoyed just for being. My kid delivered a better performance in the school play where they were rolled on stage on a skateboard dressed as a boulder.
Absolutely terrible dialogue. They ruined words. As a concept.
It seemed like they knew the end and then just cobbled together two acts with popsticks and used band aids to get there.
The shame of it, is that its a reasonably good premise.
Though it is also pretty much the same idea behind Stephen King's The Dark Half
“Look at what the cancer has become!”
‘Malignant’, a movie that after some time reflecting on it, I’m still not sure what to think of it. The movie is so messy and becomes all sorts of things, but in some weird way it’s still incredibly well made. This reminds me of when another horror director named Sam Raimi, who after directing three superhero movies like ‘Spider-Man’ then went on to make something like ‘Drag Me to Hell’, a campy horror comedy that nobody was ready for. While ‘Malignant’ is nowhere near as good as ‘Drag Me to Hell’, but I’m glad campy horror movies are not dead yet and I find it amusing how modern audiences, who are more exposed to jump scared horror flicks, are reacting to this.
This movie is so freaking bonkers in every sense of the word. It’s so out there that I found myself laughing at some scenes. The structure is so bizarre and there’s multiple scenes that when given some thought it doesn’t make too much sense. I can’t tell if it’s self-aware or not. It starts off like a creature feature with scientists running down a corridor talking quickly about the “thing” and how out of control it has gotten, while everyone is trying to sedate “it”. Then it turns into a James Wan Insidious/Conjuring movie with the usual build scares scares. But then it becomes a slasher movie with a killer named Gabriel on the loose. And finally, it turns into a campy experimental action movie that goes off the walls.
Either way, I enjoyed it so much that it felt like a breath of fresh air, even if before what I said sounded harsh. I haven't had this much fun with a horror movie in what feels like awhile. I miss these types of movies that we rarely get nowadays.
With this being a James Wan movie, it’s well filmed and he does some amazing things with the camera work, especially with the police station scene, an unbroken long take massacre action sequence, which was beautiful to watch. This is also James Wans most violent movie he’s made, and I freaking loved it. And yes, even more gory than ‘Saw’. A lot of blood and bone breaking.
The trailers and marketing didn't do justice for this movie. I didn't hear anything about this movie leading up to its release. The trailer itself made it look like a generic mid 2000's supernatural horror. But then again, how the hell are you supposed to market something like this.
The twist may or may not be predictable for some, but in terms of how it was executed, not predictable at all.
Overall rating: What more can I say, see it if you’re curious. It grows on you after seeing it.
Wan does Suspiria. From the poster art to the euro (gorgeous-there I said it) looks of Mrs Wallis, this is a nice throwback and a fitting love letter to a certain era of Italian cinema. The script is fittingly modern (but not too much), even if the chroma filters are somewhat shaky compared to the masters of the genre. But he makes it up with a shot of the innards of a VCR, to show his 20th century bona fides.
There are even shades of Channel Zero and yes, that's a good thing, even if the reverse-body thing is getting tired, all hail Troy James who invented it.
Also, bangs.
...
As I was writing all these interesting things, the third act started, and I started grinning stupidly and
That's what movies are for.
Go forth, James, you artist you. Melding 80s synth cheese music with 80s-lets-follow-this-idea-as-far-as-itll-take-us attitude, the result is refreshing. Yes, that's what it's all about. Forget MCU and horror-by-committee (sorry Mr Blum I like your work), I'm so happy that this here is a little piece of innocence lost. Memories of Troma indeed.
So Suspiria meets Troma (with a budget). Not too shabby for horror fans!
Now if you liked this, I'm sure you know where to find the 80s American classics. But do yourself a favor: go watch Berberian Sound Studio for starters. And then Bava and Argento.
Also, a personal message: tell Mrs Pugh, the greatest actress of her generation, to drop bad wicker man remakes and look for real scripts, such as this. But this movie belongs to Wallis and Hasson of course.
And thanks James for the memories and for a great cinema moment.
I figured the twist out during the opening scene but I kept watching to see how they pulled it off.
Warning - Spoilers below....
First, unless I'm mistaken, male/female twins can only be fraternal, which means they form from different eggs. The doctor comments on the egg no fully splitting so Gabriel should have been a female or was a trans character. I do hope he's not intended to be trans because that would make this whole thing very transphobic since he's the insane parasite that kills everyone while the pretty perfect CIShet white girl is just the innocent victim.
Updated (because I'm a nerd and love to share things I learn): Apparently there are two very rare instances that identical twins might have different genders. One is called semi-identical twins in which two sperm fertilize a single egg. Normally this can't happen because the first sperm stops any others from entering, but if they both arrive at once it might be possible. The second is when an XY egg splits and one of the resulting embryos is missing the Y chromosome for some reason. The first seems more plausible with this scenario since the second occurs during the full split. However, both of these cases are as rare as the whole parasitic twin thing so I would think that it should have been included in the reveal. It could have been used to explain why she had enhanced strength and speed as him even though they shared the one body.
Second, Madison would have been scarred from the top of the back of her head down to her butt crack based on the videos. No one even mentioned that though. How does a family take in a child with that type of scarring and not take it into account at all?
It you overlook the major questions and holes, the film was pretty standard fare for this director. Lots of mediocre acting. Lots of screaming. Lots of poor lighting and people who don't turn on lights. Lots of volume cranking to try and make it scarier. Lots of head scratching when it's over. The concept was interesting but the actual movie was a mess.
Oh, and that ending, WTF? She should have offed herself because she will never see the world outside a maximum security prison or mental asylum again.
This failed as a horror movie for me because I never felt scared--or even tense--but I completely enjoyed myself with this movie. The (I'm assuming) intentional campiness might be too much for some, but Wan's visual style is irresistible.
Some quick thoughts:
-Terrence Malick is gonna love this movie
-I know damn well that NO ONE would EVER park their car that close to the edge of a cliff
-Shame they didn't even try to explain the electricity stuff (if they did, I missed it)
-Guns are completely useless in this movie. Two chairs do more damage in one scene than an entire police station's worth of ammo
-I liked the score, but it never felt like it fit what was happening on screen, & a lot of the jump scare musical stings seemed to be offbeat
-"Why am I calling the police?" was my favorite line lol
-A certain scene in which a certain door is pulled closed reminded me of another certain scene in another certain movie from a certain director in which a certain door is pulled closed
I don't rate movies, but I would gladly watch this again (just not when I want to be scared)

After the success of his last film grossing over $1 billion, James Wan returned to his roots with the horror film Malignant. The film, which pays homage to the Argento and giallo films of the past, presents a mixed bag of elements. Though the acting and dialogue are mediocre at best and the film lacks any real atmosphere or scares, it carries an enigmatic air of mystery, a well-executed body count, and a shocking twist ending. The final act of the film is especially noteworthy, elevating it from a run-of-the-mill horror film. Wallis and Hasson's performances are unimpressive and no one in the cast stands out, though the finale does not quite live up to the excitement and violence that came before. The plot's twists add to the film's positive elements, and despite some confusing plot points and logic, it makes for an enjoyable experience.
