Pacific Rim: Uprising 2018

Ok...so I kinda loved the first one and was very much looking forward to this one. Did it live up to my expectations??? Not really...

Pacific Rim: Uprising is by no means a dud, but for some reason, it lacks a certain "grandness" that the first one had. The story is less interesting ( and to be honest, way more cheesy than the first one), the acting leaves a little to be desired, and the effects seem somewhat subdued. The "anime" feeling of the first one is also kind of missing.

Does that mean that this is an unwatchable mess? No...If you liked the first one, you should get some enjoyment out of this one as well. It just isn't in any way as entertaining as the first one. It's a bit more "family friendly " as well, but that never hurts when it comes to these kinds of movies.

These are one of those movies you just have to watch and make up your own mind. In my book, it's passable as an evenings entertainment.

Pacific Rim: Uprising can simply be described as a disappointment. A messy script with some lacklustre character development and some poorly-executed villain twists and turns. John Boyega and Cailee Spaeny bring something new and exciting to the crashing of Kaijus whereas the ‘new recruits’ really have nothing to do (or say) creating lacklustre action scenes. Burn Gorman’s Dr Hermann Gottlieb is a highlight amongst the returning cast who really deserved more from a boring unimaginative sequel.

First movie was a visual masterpiece and a great story told by Guillermo Del Toro genius.
This one has nothing to do with Del Toro and you will notice it right from the beginning.
If you are into disney 6 yr old kiddie movies like the new Star Wars, you might even like it, otherwise don't even bother.
Youngsters are getting into giant robots because... Because fuck you, that is why. Nothing in this movie is making any goddamn sense and whole picture basically aimed for 6yr old kids entertainment.

I am still trying to forget Josh Boyega's cringy acting attempts. Cant figure out the difference between him and Jaden Smith, remind me how are those guys are even getting into the business?

Charlie Day's performance was probably the only thing in that picture worth watching. But with the 10 minutes of a total screen time you can't really do much.

Do us a favor, just bury this series. No need to fuck with the corpse no more. Just let it go. We already have Transformers big screen TV show, another one will simply be too fuckin much.

Hot Tip!

Don’t watch Pacific Rim 2. It was obvious it was going to be a cheap cash in without Del Toro. And without his genius and style it’s nothing more than a throw away sci-fi robot movie. May taint the awesome original, you’ve been warned.

Felt like a kids movie. Magic that made the first movie spectacular is not found here anymore. Very disappointing.

Better than the previous one

Pacific Rim: the Junior Edition.

This sequel is pretty good, almost on a par with the original. Threatens to overload the senses towards the end, Michael Bay style, with its intense action scenes, but it never becomes too boring (unlike the last Transformers movie). Worth a watch if you like this kind of thing - you won't remember much of it the next day, but that's okay.

This sequel switched it's audience for one 10 years younger, and it's Jaegers for Power Ranger knock offs. The dialogue is annoyingly juvenile, as are the relationships. The only character given any depth was Amara Namani while all the others (including the main character, Jake Pentecost) are poorly sketched. I think the avid fans of the first film will find this one a lost opportunity. I give this film a 6 (fair) out of 10. [Rockum Sockum Dustup]

It's of the "know what you're watching and don't think to hard" variety.
Cheesy dialogue, shallow and predictable story, no real highlights in characters as well as acting. But it looks allright and a lot of stuff is being destroyed. If you like that you'll be ok, if you don't - well than don't watch. Simple, isn't it ?

I might actually prefer this film to the original. More linear and gets rid of the crappy shaky-cam and difficult to follow action. The story, while not Shakespeare, is adequate to get to some good robot on monster fighting. My real complaint is that the fight sequences need to be more plentiful. You wait way too long for a movie that this is primarily created for. 8/10

An extremely satisfying sequel for me

Standard sequel, more robots, more destruction, less interesting. ;)

"Why do people watch movies of mechs and monsters fighting? for the plot of course!" - the people who made this movie, probably.
Seriously. The writing was straight up trash. The first movie understood its purpose and managed to successfully entertain without having too much terrible dialogue but it seems in the 5 years it took for a sequel they forgot what made the original fun.
I don't care about some children being trained to be the pilots.
I don't care about some guys daddy issues.
Just fight the damn monsters and keep the cringey writing to a minimum.

Not as good as the first but better than advertised by movie snobs.

I enjoyed it very much, I don't know why people are so mad at the movie... Yes I know it is not the strongest, it has flaws, and it is not like the first part, yet it is enjoyable.

loading replies

Very standard and predictable, but enjoyable, movie. The villain was way too obvious.

Extra point for the use of the Trololo song

Trans-kaijuuuuu.. more than meets the eyeeeeee ppphhhffrrrrttt

Very poor sequel, where is Charlie Hunnam, they should of kept him in the sequel 4/10

Explosions, Robots, Monsters, Action. Worth watching!

This movie was super cheesy. I enjoyed it....but yeah, that cheese factor is high.

loading replies

The whole movie is on the poster so there's not much for me to add, other than this installment surpasses the first as there's more action. Nothing else has really changed apart from that.

The story is still ridiculous (and thinner this time around, the stakes feel smaller), the acting is still hit and miss (John Boyega is a high point, Scott Eastwood is at the other end of the spectrum), and the jokes still fall flat...but no one goes to a Pacific Rim film for any of those.

We go to watch giant robots fight Godzilla and we get more of that here than the first time round so I have no choice but to recommend it.

loading replies

Somewhat disappointed. Nothing like the first one. Very slow development of the story. The good part of the movie started at about 1hr20min. The beginning was a lot like the last Transformers. If someone is debating weather to see it in IMAX - save your money.

Loved This Movie! I Was A Big Fan Of Charlie Hunnam In The First Movie, And This Movie Picked Up Where The Other One Left Of With A Bit More Fun, Bigger Robots, And Better Fights. Boyega Added A Different Kind Of Flavor To The Movie That I Thoroughly Enjoyed.

Watch Out For The Gundam Easter Eggs!

A Perfect Blend Of Action, Robots, And Laughter! You Go To Pacific Rim To Watch Robots Beat The Crap Out Of Monsters And This Movie Thoroughly Delivers On That, I Can’t Wait For The Sequel.

It's just a forgettable film. It is missing the heart that Guillermo del Toro put into the first one. The first half is pretty slow but the second half is good for some dumb action. The action isn't the best but it is still entertaining. John Boyega carries the movie, he is the best part of the whole thing. Scott Eastwood is just bland and him saying things like "Hell Yeah" just makes it worst. I'm also glad that Charlie Day came back but I didn't like what they did with his character. Maybe worth a watch if you liked the first one or just want to see some robots fighting monsters but even if you wanted that you would still have to sit through an hour of boring people talking.

annoying chinese part in the movie..but Zhang Jin acting is still awesome

loading replies

Not as good as the first one, cheesy dialogue, not very interesting storyline tbf. But the CGI is awesome, they could have done with a better cast too. But wth go watch it if you like giant robots and action.

loading replies

Watched the first 20 minutes. I was already skittish after seeing what appeared to be a 12-year old little girl supposedly build a jillion-dollar piece of technological mastery by herself - especially with no backstory or explanation - and by the 20-minute mark, the dialogue, what passed for a "story", and the acting were already so bad that I stopped it and came to Trakt to check other reviews. Found out my apprehension was not without cause; it seems like this was a money-grab Transformers wanna-be aimed at a very juvenile audience. Based on a lot of other reviews/comments here, I'm stopping at the 20-minute mark and not wasting any more time on this one. You don't have to accept this as a "full-on review" because, NO, I did not watch the whole movie. I watched enough, however, to know that there are way too many other movies worth my time. This doesn't belong in the same league as the original Pacific Rim so you're on your own as to whether you decide to watch this or not. I'm not wasting more than 20 minutes on it.

Shutting off your brain in a Transformers type of way is the only real way to enjoy this one. The movie isn’t as interesting as the original, the plot is wonky, and there’s other similar movies that do it much better.

Rating: 2/5 - 6.5/10 - Not Recommended to Everyone

Sorry to say. But Pacific Rim 1 even had its impact. It was curious and funny. Now this "uprising" is one of the worst films I have ever tried to watch. There is no character development. Everything seems so badly planned in the story that Jake loses his sister, and on the same day he is all silly happy with his friend as if nothing had happened ... Jake is a supposed thief and Amara a supposed Jagger mechanic (as is possible) ?). Without knowing what moves them, who they really are, they are now great friends ... .for everything .... because I couldn't even see until the end. No wonder that in 2020 I have not even heard of this "uprising", which is at the end a very severe "downgrade".

I just don't give a zero rating, because I even feel sorry for these actors. I think they deserved better roles in films with body, soul and content. If it is to continue like this it is better not to make a film 3 ...

THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME AND
ABSOLUTELY BLOWS
THE 1st MOVIE CLEAN OUT OF THE WATER. THE PACING OF THIS FANTASTIC MOVIE IS MUCH BETTER, SO IS THE ACTION AND SOMETHING THE 1st MOVIE FORGOT ABOUT WAS THE FUN FUN FUN.
THIS MOVIE KEEPS YOUR INTEREST FROM START TO FINUSH AND DOES NOT BOG IT'S SELF DOWN WITH LONG DREARY OFTEN BORING STORY. IT'S ALL QUICK PACE INTERESTING AND FUN. THE ACTORS ARE AWESOME AND ACTUALLY LOOK AS THOUGH THEY ARE HAVING A GOOD TIME SO IN TURN SO DO WE.
IT HAS EMOTIONAL PARTS
HUMOUR SUSPENSE. FANTASTIC ACTION
SEQUENCES, ALL IN THE RIGHT ORDER AND APPROPRIATE AMOUNTS. PLUS LOVE THE EVOLUTION AND PROGRESSION OF THE STORY. IT ALL JUST WORKS REALLY REALLY....REALLY
WELL AND WITH A 3RD ONE BEING DRAFTED THEY WANT TO STICK TO THIS FORMULA AND NOT THE 1st ONE, BECAUSE THEY ARE DEFINITELY HEADING ON THE CORRECT TRAJECTORY.
I JUST HOPE THEY KEEP TO THE IDEA OF HAVING IT IN THE SAME UNIVERSE AS
GODZILLA VS KONG
PR1 8/10, "PR2 10/10"
P/3 N/A......TBA

A good fun action flick if you forget it is a sequel
and don't expect too much from it.

Should be ok-movie for kids (under 14 years), but adults will be bored to death :(.

What happened? couldn't they have patiently waited for Guillermo to finish Shape of Water to make an actual good sequel? my God! everything that made the first one a beautiful work of art, which you could have seen the love of the genre in every scene, is completely gone in this terrible, corny sequel. The acting was cheesey(and not in the good way), the plot seemed confused and rushed, literally no emotions and the CGI was sub par at best. I recommend a hard pass on this one, I literally watched this movie and as it ended I forgot it. 4/10 the only reason it got a 4 is cuz of the mega kaiju.....nothing else. Hard Pass.

On paper, the movie seems like the kind of thing I should be really into, twist and all, but it just fell flat. It was more like an entertaining but forgettable Bayformers movie rather than a sequel to Pacific Rim.

The Pacific Rim movie is yeah a kaiju fighting movie but this movie does make you question things I wish they could have put more kaiju but looks interesting to see the third in the future. best hopes to legendary.

First 10 minutes were actually intriguing..... And then it went downhill from there.

More action, faster paced, cooler looking monsters and robots. This is a follow up that surpasses the original.

This movie was an absolute mess with no direction and mediocre plot, really glad del Toro's steered far away from this Chinese made sequel.

Ironically the best part of a movie about Giant robots and aliens. was the building of a big brother and little sister relationship between Boyega and Cailee Spaeny.

Plot terrible, visual effects quite good. 5/10

The visual effects again awesome. Unfortunately this didn't have the nice atmosphere and feel as the previous one, but here were some cool moments for sure. It was disappointing for me, but I definitely want another Pacific Rim. The Universe is great, big scary monsters and big robots - awesome!'

Did I just watch Transformers? Certainly felt like it.
