2016x01 Yoshi's Story / Yoshi's Island 64

  • 2016-01-20T05:00:00Z11m

Yoshi is one of my favorite video game characters. This dinosaur has some of the cutest and most fun games ever made, and a lot of this character's personality was first seen in Yoshi's Story. So, enjoy this look at development of one of the cutest games I've ever played. :)

2016x02 Super Mario Strikers

  • 2016-02-20T05:00:00Z11m

Of all the Mario sports games, Super Mario Strikers (known also as Mario Smash Football) is my favorite. This game has given me some of my fondest memories with my friends. But with such a radical departure from the typical Mario look and feel, there must have been quite a few changes leading up to release... and there were.

2016x03 Rayman Origins

2016x03 Rayman Origins

  • 2016-03-29T04:00:00Z11m

Before Rayman Origins, I didn't exactly play a whole lot of Rayman games. In fact, I really only played them over at my friend's house once and a while when we hung out. Fast forward years later, though, in 2011 when Rayman Origins was released. Those beautiful graphics and amazing gameplay couldn't keep anyone away! But even though this game is indeed incredible, did you know it was going to be even better? After all, it was going to have a very deep plot that spanned back to the original Rayman.

I hope you enjoy learning all about it!

2016x04 Star Fox 64

  • 2016-05-13T04:00:00Z11m

My personal favorite Star Fox title is Star Fox 64. No contest. Why? Well, not only is the gameplay still super fun to play today, the game was also incredibly innovative at the time. It implemented full voice acting and helped usher in a new age of rumble controllers. But how did this game come together? Well, on this episode of Beta64, I'm going to be going though just that.

Enjoy!

2016x05 Mario Kart: Double Dash

  • 2016-06-10T04:00:00Z11m

Whenever I had friends over back in the early 2000s, Mario Kart: Double Dash was our game of choice (that and Donkey Konga). And though more than 12 years have passed since the game's release, we'll still play this classic racer together whenever we find the chance. It's fast racing gameplay is what keeps us coming back, but it turns out that "fast" was not a term the described this game at E3 2003. In fact, "disappointing" and "slow" were common terms to describe Double Dash during development. So, how did the development team fix these issues? Well, on this episode of Beta64, I'll tell you all about it.

Enjoy!

The Professor Layton series is one I hold very dear to my heart. I absolutely love it. The puzzles are challenging, the characters are quirky, and the story is amazing. But all of this was originally never going to be. Layton and his apprentice Luke weren't a part of Curious Village until well into development. And on this episode of Beta64, you're going to learn all about how this game was being created.

2016x07 Super Mario World

2016x07 Super Mario World

  • 2016-09-08T04:00:00Z11m

If you asked someone what their favorite Mario game was, most of them would say Super Mario World. But can you blame them? The game is absolutely incredible! All the level, secrets, and memories with the game, makes it one of the best (if not the best) Mario game ever. It's perfect. ...well, almost.

Super Mario World had a lot of issues during development, and it eventually had to be rushed to completion. Because of this, there were some mistakes you may not be aware of in the game. And not only that, there are a TON of scrapped objects, sprites, levels, etc. just waiting to be discussed. And now, it's time to do just that.

Enjoy, my friends!

2016x08 Diddy Kong Racing / Pro Am 64

  • 2016-10-23T04:00:00Z11m

Diddy Kong Racing… what a game! Great tracks, great music… But out of all the things that DKR excelled at, it’s storyline is really what made it for me. It set this Rare title apart from the competition (i.e. Mario Kart 64). But, where did the idea for an adventure mode come from? Well, actually, it might surprise you to know that it came from the 2nd of 4 major iterations that Diddy Kong Racing went through! So, I hope you enjoy learning how a little game called Pro Am 64 became the incredible Diddy Kong Racing!

Donkey Kong and Sabreman... what do these two video game characters have in common? Well, in turns out that both Donkey Kong Racing and Sabreman Stampede came from a game based around Diddy Kong Racing, which released for the Nintendo 64 back in 1997. And on this episode of Beta64 minis, I'm going link the two games together and explain what happened to both of these cancelled Rare titles in 7min 46sec. Enjoy!

Before Rhythm Heaven and Rhythm Paradise released on the DS, there was Rhythm Tengoku for the Gameboy Advance. This game, despite never releasing outside of Japan, received a lot of love including a fan translation. But now that you're able to play some of these exclusive rhythm games in Megamix for the 3DS, I thought it was time to talk about the development of Rhythm Tengoku!

Enjoy!

2016x11 Beta64 Interview - Cuphead

  • 2016-06-18T04:00:00Z11m

Cartoons from the 1920s and 30s had a distinct art style that, to my knowledge, hasn't been used in video games... like ever. That's why, the moment I saw Cuphead, I knew I had to play it. With its challenging platforming and beautiful, hand-drawn characters and backgrounds, this game is sure to be an incredible title upon release.

To help us learn more about Cuphead, I spoke with animator Joseph Coleman, who was more than happy to let us know more information on the game.

2016x12 Beta64 Interview - We Happy Few

  • 2016-06-19T04:00:00Z11m

We Happy Few is a nice, lighthearted game made by Compulsion Games. It takes place in a Wellington Wells, a happy little area where everyone is having the time of their lives... as prisoners of the drug called Joy. You play as a "Downer" who is off the drug and is trying to escape the island alive. But can he?

In order to learn more about this psychological thriller, I spoke with Sam Abbott, the Chief Operating Officer at Compulsion Games.

Enjoy!

  • 2016-06-25T04:00:00Z11m

The second day of E3 was amazing. So many games to play, so little time to play them. These games range from many different genres: arcade, run and gun, realtime strategy, visual novel, and more. And you're going to hear all about them. :)

So, enjoy this look at Battlezone, Cuphead, Wild Guns Reloaded, Worms W.M.D., Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice, Nioh, Attack on Titan, and Floor Plan!

2016x15 E3 2016 (Day 3)

  • 2016-06-29T04:00:00Z11m

We've finally made it to the last day of E3 2016. What an incredible experience! The past two days, we've seen games like Breath of the Wild, Cuphead, Nioh, Worms W.M.D., and a lot more. And though we've reached the end, we've still got more games to see. So, let's see what the rest of the show has to offer, shall we?

The Professor Layton series is one I hold very dear to my heart. I absolutely love it. The puzzles are challenging, the characters are quirky, and the story is amazing. But all of this was originally never going to be. Layton and his apprentice Luke weren't a part of Curious Village until well into development. This game was provided by Nintendo for this review.

I first played Metroid Blast Ball at E3 2015 and had a blast! (see what I did there XD) After hearing that Blast Ball would include a campaign under the title Federation Force, I was very interested in playing the game. After receiving it in the mail, I really had no idea what it was going to be like. Hopefully, my experience with Federation Force will help you decide whether it's worth it to you.

2016x19 Reviews by Beta64 - Yo-Kai Watch 2

  • 2016-09-30T04:00:00Z11m

Thanks to Nintendo for sending me a copy of both versions of Yo-Kai Watch 2 for this review!

So, I'm just going to say it. A week ago, I had no idea what Yo-Kai Watch even was. I mean, I'd seen it around, but it never crossed my mind to play it. But with Yo-Kai Watch 2 arriving in the mail, I decided to give it a try. Was it a good idea to start with the sequel first? And how was it? Well, I'm glad you asked! Enjoy this review on Yo-Kai Watch 2! :)

Thanks to Nintendo for providing Pokemon Sun and Moon for the review!

So... I've never played Pokemon before. I know I know. But don't worry, because thanks to Pokemon Sun and Moon, I was able to play a Pokemon game for the first time. And plus, with all the cool additional Pokemon and new Z Moves, it seems like Sun and Moon would be a great start. But, does Pokemon Sun and Moon hold up on its own? Is it worth getting, not because its a Pokemon game, but because it's great on its own? Well, I'm going to give you my opinion, as a first time Pokemon player, in this review of Pokemon Sun and Moon!
