I don't like the idea of killing the doctor off like that.
I don't like when death isn't treated seriously, especially in this case. This episode cheapens death, the doctors death, and we know he's not really going to be killed off as a character, so his supposed death doesn't really mean much.
It's cheap, trying to be clever, and melodramatic. Not to mention more manipulative behavior from the doctor in gathering his friends to watch him die and think he's really dead.
I like the idea of the future doctor leaving the notes for his companions and younger self, i just don't like the manner of his death and the lack of weight in death.
A girl is inside the astronaut suit trying to kill the doctor. The call to the president was a plea for help or a trap to lure the doctor to that place, where the girl in the suit is and where those creatures are. Those creatures who have been on earth for centuries among us and who live in those tunnels that are throughout the planet.
I like the concept of the creatures, but i feel like it's unlikely those creatures would never be discovered. Like the one who got into the whitehouse, the guards would have had their weapons trained on it, and if one looked away then more would have still been trained on it. Or if a guard looked away and then right back he'd see it again, and he'd also remember he previously saw it, so it would make him/the guards even more determined to keep their eye on it and have it under guard and spread the message and keep it contained. Then when it's contained, by keeping a camera on it they'd always have an image of it. Nevermind, i guess we just have to buy people always forgot them.
Why did one of the creatures tell to Amy to tell the doctor some cryptic stuff about what he knows and doesn't know? Even though Amy will forget it as soon as she looks away?
You're on a dangerous mission and you decide to distract the doctor by telling him you're pregnant?
I like the dynamic between River and the doctor, even if it's a bit too much.
I mean, i enjoyed the character dynamics in the episode, but the plot doesn't feel like it has much weight or depth or there's actually much plot here. It's more about the cryptic mysteries than an actual plot of things happening. In that sense it feels similar to the pandorica opens in season 5.
9/10
Superb
What an amazing
episode and fantastic
start to the series.
Everything was so intense
more than usual in this
episode and I loved it,
The Doctor was so intense
in the Tardis you just know
not to fcuk with him, he
sent Chills down my spine
That scene was definitely my
favourite part.
Crowly you son of a bitch
Absolutely frickin awesome
to have him in this and his
real life farther
(R.I.P Bless him).
Crowly getting a go in
The Tardis was everything.
What an amazing episode
and to begin with
The Doctors death was
Brilliant I loved it, something
so rare for Who, it was
Phenomenal to be a part
of that and to witness
The Doctors regeneration
being interrupted, Wow
the stakes have never
been higher, now
we have 12 episodes to
figure out how to help
The Doctor without
The Doctor knowing the
full facts it's down to
the Companions to pick
up the slack.
This was a truly Outstanding
episode it had everything
you could want for a
Great Doctor Who episode.
super stoked for the rest
of this season.
"I just popped out
to get my special straw
it adds more fizz"
Haha lol lol I died
That scene was awesome,
Super funny.
Matt Smith slayed this
episode and then some.
Really loved River's monologue - paraphrasing: everytime I see my doctor he knows me less.
Mark Sheppard (aka The King of Hell) said in an interview that, at his suggestion, they hired his Father to play the old version of his character. Also, he recommended that anyone not on board (yet) with watching Doctor Who -- that they start with, "Fish Fingers and Custard," (05-01) to get a sense of what they can really do with The Doctor.
I have a discipline I generally stick to of only watching one episode a day (born out of sneaking into a second theater after buying a fresh bucket of popcorn -- but, regretting it 'cuz it blunted the impact of both movies).
I've had to wait three quarters of a year to finally see the king of hell in Der Who, and I completely forgot that was part of why I skipped back to S05-E01. So cool! (back to the show...)

still the BEST eleven opener besides the eleventh hour.
as much as it makes me sad to think the doctor really invited his friends to watch him die, i love the idea of him trusting them THAT much and seeking them out when he thought his time was up. really makes the words spoken in the finale "Of all the things you've told me, this I find hardest to believe. Why would you invite your friends to see your death?" "I had to die. I didn't have to die alone. Amy and Rory. The last Centurion and the girl who waited. However dark it got, I'd turn around, and there they'd be. If it's time to go, remember what you're leaving. Remember the best. My friends have always been the best of me." that much more potent and powerful. you see how much eleven cares about them and river enough to want their comfort when he's dying even when he knows it'll hurt them to see it.
the scenes that mess with me the most: the eleven & amy scene in the tardis and the river & rory scene in the tunnels. the eleven & amy scene is so beautiful and makes me cry. "Swear to me. Swear to me on something that matters." "Fish fingers and custard." "My life in your hands, Amelia Pond." that scene always gets to me as you can truly see how much eleven trusts amy to the point where he's willing to go somewhere that he 1. doesn't want to and 2. doesn't trust the info enough. i've always thought that the one good thing moffat did in his era was strengethen the friendships/relationships with his doctors and their companions. like eleven/amy, eleven/clara, twelve/clara, and twelve/bill. they were all created so beautifully and developed and you can see the true friendship i.e. eleven & amy and twelve & bill while you can see the budding romance between eleven/clara and twelve/clara. the scene with river and rory in the tunnels always breaks my heart. she talks about how that worst day is coming when the doctor won't know who she is and that's the day she dreads most and how she thinks it'll kill her....
the ending scene with amy and eleven is one of the best in the entire doctor who series. it's the first time in new who, i think, we see a companion physically pick up a weapon, something the doctor swears against, to protect his life before anything actually happens and it's powerful. this entire episode amy talked about wanting to avenge his death or stop it from happening, even going as far as asking river about it, and she does it. then she sees it's a little girl in the astronaut suit and that changes everything, but it's too late.
