On a starry night, in the suggestive setting of the Gola del Bottaccione, Professor Albani gives an astronomy lesson to a small group of people, among them there are also Don Matteo, Pippo, Natalina and the Marshal. The next morning Albani was found lifeless at the bottom of the gorge. Some strange light phenomena, which occurred the night before make Pippo and Natalina begin to believe in the presence of UFOs.

Just as the famous Gubbio guitarist Gloria Porrini is promoting her tour in Gubbio, a well-known luthier, who turns out to be her father, is found dead. Unexpectedly, the young artist is accused of the crime. Tommasi finds an old childhood friend who came to Gubbio as a coroner. According to Cecchini, she is the right woman for the captain.
During a university party, a girl flies out the window, almost dying. Also at the party is Cecchini's daughter, Patrizia, who seems to have been involved in the accident. Embittered for having quarrelled with her father, the young girl moves to Captain Tommasi's house, while Pippo receives a completely unexpected inheritance and noble title...

In the barracks, the carabinieri prepare to receive honours. Everything seems to portend a beautiful day of celebration, but Signora Tommasi is the victim of a car accident, colliding with Amanda. Although the woman is barely bruised, she takes advantage of the situation to attract her son's attention to her, making life impossible for him.
Don Matteo and the bishop meet up at the Gubbio Aeronautics Club to go skydiving together, to remember the good ole days. After they jump from the helicopter, however, something goes wrong and Bishop Benelli disappears all together.
Don Matteo is the new religion teacher at the Gubbio High School. On his very first day he finds himself dealing with the boisterous boys in their senior year, and, in particular, Daniele, the prime suspect for a recent assault on an Italian teacher. Meanwhile, the long-awaited boxing tournament between the Carabinieri in Gubbio and the Carabinieri in Perugia is approaching.
