I hate it when they introduce new characters and kill them off mere minutes later. They wanted to show how dangerous those trails were and how happiness and sorrow always came hand in hand. But it makes me not want to connect with new characters for fear they will die, too.
There are many storylines and characters and they take huge leaps through time. The children get older but the adults always look the same. The whole story is rather shallow and laden with cliche's.

Much better episode than episode 1. They have to cover a lot of history in 1.5 hours, so the story is a bit rushed. Nevertheless, it was well done, and heartbreaking to watch at times.
