[3.6/10] This was pretty rough. I’m not sure I laughed once in the entire half-hour. The idea of using Montana-based loners as connective tissue for the sketches in an amusing enough concept, but the results were dismal.
Mountain Dougie as one such loner, being granted his independence by the FBI and then getting lonely enough to return to the USA is a solid premise for a sketch, but went on too long with too few laughs. The one solid observational bit in this episode was the local news reporter complaining to the anchor about how he was no new information and can’t speculate, which is an all too relevant commentary on the state of news reporting today.
The “Thrilling Miracles” sketch was god awful. I can appreciate dark humor as much as the next guy, but an entire sketch about domestic abuse with the only comic twist being the context of an infomercial was too much for me. The absolute nadir of the episode.
The “trying to get through customs” sketch had a mild chuckle at the end, and solid idea of Cross’s continued Freudian slips, but again, went on way too long. And the F.F. Woodycooks’ crimestopper bit was DOA, and felt like a parody of something that might have been topical at the time, but became a headscratcher today.
I did get some laughs at the (seemingly improvised) commentary from Bob Odenkirk and Tom Kenny about the “independent nations games” (and enjoyed Jay Johnston’s physical humor), so maybe the saving grace of this one is what plays over the end credits. Otherwise, this is one to avoid.
