There are other ways of communication, and this episode shows just that, its weird that this episode is not communicated in a different manner instead of visual and audio. It does have a great meaning behind it.

First Riva beams down there with really any precautions taken which turns into this: "In my arrogance I thought no one could harm the great Riva. I am such a fool." He then fairly quickly, considering the circumstances, beams back down, tells everyone they can leave, to which Riker says: I'm still not comfortable leaving you here alone." And Riva's response is: "Thank you for your concern. I will be fine."

Really, Riva?? REALLY? Not like your entire Chorus just got murdered with you only surviving because Riker pushed you out of the way. And I'm sure the added hardship of having to teach them sign language with only your bare hands is going to make things even easier. I also don't understand how Riker could think this was a good idea or Picard either.
This episode really didn't make a lot of sense to me.

It's a nice sentiment, but hardly realistic. The idea that two peoples who have been at war for however long would take the time to sit down and learn a language, which will takes months upon months, just so they can attempt to hash out a peace with a mediator is ridiculous. Mainly because the two parties already speak the same language. They're not learning each other's language, they're learning the mediator's. So when they get frustrated with being unable to convey their wishes properly with this new language, they'll just devolve into shouting at each other in the language they already know, and then will resume fighting.

Yeah this is corny but whatever

Not much to say about this episode as it deals with a contained storyline. Some character development on Troi's part. It's an easy to watch episode that deals on the surface with the pointlessness of wars and the fact that it is often a lack of communication that prevents peace. But I think the important part here is that you should try to turn a disadvantage into an advantage and not to throw in after a failure.

A mediator who is mute, but, speaks through 3 others telepathically. How very confusing.
