THE FUCKING CINEMATOGRAPHY TOWARDS THE END HOLY SHIT NUGGETS
There I am, engrossed for nearly an hour in one of the strangest stories I've been told in a while, and THEN I see the open credits appear. That it came at a point in the story where the 'weird' turned up 'extra', I must admit, my jaw dropped for a moment. If for no other reason, I can say, I did not expect that.
For a first episode, this does very little in terms of telling us more than Prairie... my bad, The OA, is... well what is she? I don't think any of us could guess from this first episode. The basic premise as it stands is: Blind girl disappears. Girl reappears with sight. She's tapped into something we can't see, but maybe some people can 'feel'.
The way the narrative is built, the way it engages you in a subtle way... yes, let's watch on and see where this goes, but as of this writing, I cannot guess as to what is happening.
This show is oddly creepy, but at the same time, inspiring.... I'd invoke 'Twin Peaks' but maybe it's too soon for that.
Just 3 words: WTF. Astonishing
I loved the acting of the mother of Prairie, really shows the anguish she can feel through her daughter. Such an empathy made me cry.
The show we didn't know we needed.
This is a review of the first episode only.
At first it looks like any kind of psychological thrillers. A blind woman goes missing, returns after 7 years with her eyesight restored. You can say nothing is special about that, we've seen plenty of shows with a similar plot. You're then after presented with a set of characters that are each different in character, but they are all tied up by diversity, and their uprisal from society, and in their personal changing, like crossing a line, "from childhood to adulthood". I will say their presentation came out a little flat, but I do have hope for more expanding. All we know after this episode is just the basics.
The episode then leads up to a specific moment, that I will not explain to avoid spoilers, but throws the near-end of the show into a kind of "journey" that I personally found very inspiring, and it's almost like a sort of poetry, the music, the colors, the words, all tied up perfectly.
Sounds and seems like a lot, but in reality I can't say I'm left with high expectations to this show really, might sound negative, but I think it's actually quite perfect. This is a show you need to enjoy lightly and spend time thinking of the meaning of things while you watch it.
I can't recall feeling so emotional in the first episode of a tv show, it was so ethereal.
Intriguing and well acted, if not a bit slow..
A little slow-moving, but interesting enough that I'll watch past the first episode at least.
I love how the title sequence shows up like an hour into the show just as things really take off.
There just like shit is about to get real crazy now. And it does. The first part of this episode was really slow and at times boring but the last minutes after the opening credits were really captivating and now I can't wait to watch the next episode.
Has kind of an Leftover-ish vibe. I like it.
I gotta say, I didn't expected it to be incredibly interesting, but it actually was very intriguing. Good acting, interisting and mysterious story and pretty amazing visuals near the end. (Even though the drone-shots weren't that "high quality". :-D)
I'm definitely gonna keep on watching. :-)
So, Marling created, wrote, produced and plays the main role ? That doesn't sound good. I normally give a show a couple of episodes to see if I'm interested but this one had nothing in it for me.
After I decided to not watch another episode I checked the plot online and think I made the right choice.
After finishing "blood" series season 1, i am here. I watch series season by season. After finishing season 1 of OA, i will move to another series.
I chose this series because i need mystery and science-fiction. And it seems episodes are long.
I hope i can enjoy.
I will copy this to also season 1 and episode 1 reviews.
ADD ON AFTER WATCHING EPISODE:
Slow and lots of things for intro
It is hard to take it all i think.
The scenes in russia were good. Probably around year of 1995s. The father is really cool. Helped oa to fight against cold. That scene was nice.
Her dream-nightmare became true. She was stuck in the bus one day. It was also interesting. Did she have vision, how could she know?
I really wonder what she wil do with that 5 people. And why doors wanted to be left open.
And how she came to usa after russia. It will be fun to discover and to see i think.
It was hard episode. So much things to understand.
I will never get tired of watching this show over and over again. You see new pieces of the puzzle with every watch, it’s a masterpiece.
Viendo el piloto pinta bastante bien, veremos como evoluciona.
awfully slow but the ending was pretty good tho

I can honestly say this is the first time I've seen the opening credits 55 min into an episode.
