Beast

i think with any other cast and slightly worse fx this would've been garbage. but sharlto copley and idris elba were awesome and the animal cgi was pretty great. i think the one thing that vfx artists still can't perfect is the way fur or feathers move through someone's fingers when they pet an animal tbh.

Morbius

i mean it could've been worse but no one's complaining about the part that i REALLY struggled to suspend disbelief for - he's a world renowned scientist with a blood disorder where he needs multiple treatments daily BEFORE the vampire shit and you're telling me they wouldn't be giving him access to treatment in jail??

Mr. Harrigan's Phone

don't go in expecting a horror and it's a pretty good film. the acting is good—especially the guy who played kenny yankovich, holy shit, i haven't felt that level of fight-or-flight over a bully since i was 12 years old

Jurassic World Dominion

certainly not the best but by this point in a franchise i don't really expect anything to be great?? the OG cast was so lovely to have though, truly.

Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story: 1x02 Please Don't Go

since the episode didn't include any kind of note at the end, i want to give anyone else watching a quick reminder that those police officers did in fact speak like that to the operator and that their homophobia was not dramatized. if anything, this series has had to play down some of the details of the actual events for the sake of palatable television.

sandra smith and nicole childress were black women, konerak simthasomphone was from laos, and these officers and dahmer were white. there is a reason that konerak was brought back to dahmer's apartment that night. there's a reason those police officers didn't bother to investigate the smell of decomposition in dahmer's apartment. this was racism and homophobia, plain and simple.

"fun" fact: officer balcerzak was made president of the milwaukee police department in 2005, and retired in 2017 with full benefits and pension. the milwaukee department even posted a tweet congratulating him on his "service."

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: 1x05 Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans

if you don't like this stop watching it, it's not that hard??? more importantly, you should stop and think: it's probably not FOR you.

as a woman who would, if thrown into the mcu, 100% NOT be interested in the life of an avenger and would just want to live my life, she-hulk is one of the most relatable characters in the entire franchise. i have been charmed by every single episode, and i have felt so genuinely empathetic toward jennifer walters. she is funny, imperfect, and at this point in the show still very uncomfortable in her own skin. the cgi doesn't feel bad; it feels rather impressive for a full cgi rendered person, and again, the fact that the character is so painfully awkward getting used to her new persona makes what uncanny valley exists easily rationalized.

seriously. just stop watching if you don't like this. it's  not  for  you  it's for people who see themselves in the character and who want a 30 minute comedic romp in the mcu every week.

it's not ragnarok but it was a cute movie. and groupwatch meant i could watch with my bff while in different states and that was nice especially because she got to go "it u" when the goats came out screaming.

as a bonus thought, a while after watching—i think the horror that was in this movie runs the risk of being unappreciated if you've never watched a weird ass anime before. jordan's love of evangelion is unmistakable when you revisit the alien.

it's a great movie. not horror in the traditional sense, but an homage to peele's inspirations and an awesome cast. there are a few delightful misdirection jump scares and a moment proving children are truly the Worst:tm:, but i do think the third act's eldritchian, supermassive monster moment gave me the most discomfort. like, it just took everything about space that makes me want to vomit and turned it up to 11. jordan peele has honestly never disappointed me; even if this isn't my favorite film by him, it is absolutely a good one and more than worth its runtime.

The Cursed

honestly boyd holbrook is doing the most to make up for all the british actors with good american accents. also, the movie is great and delightfully gory. like any period piece it feels a bit slow at times but it's got a solid story from start to finish and the werewolf idea is fun.

Prey

the usual disclaimer: i know next to nothing about the predator franchise and just watched this because it sounded good. so my opinions might suck to someone who actually saw the original predator films.

the cgi is sometimes not that great but i've seen worse in 2022 and i think the pacing was pretty good. the dog does not die, which is excellent. and the cast is all believable. i do find it strange that the comanche would speak english within their own community—i've got a background in language acquisition and even in modern times most people do not use a non-native language in their home, except in very rare circumstances or to communicate with a loved one who does not speak their mother tongue. in general the language choices are difficult to suspend disbelief for, whether it's the overused english or the weird french. i saw there's a comanche dub, but frankly i think the movie would have been just as engaging if english had been the dub and comanche the full filming language.

They/Them

the dog dies, but it's quick and the poor good boy had cancer.

so, it's not as bad as people have claimed. i think anyone who goes into a horror film expecting there not to be social commentary is watching the wrong genre. of every genre in film, the only one MORE about social commentary is documentaries. instead, this is a b, c-leaning horror but it's watchable and entertaining compared to some horrors i've had to sit through. it's a cute addition to the slasher genre; yet, it's set at a campground and there's a masked killer, so it's also very on the nose. the acting isn't bad and there's a varied cast that does feel cohesive. it's just also an average horror film that i think could have been equally successful as just a drama/thriller about a gay conversion camp, or a campy comedic take on a very unpleasant subject (which has been done but less so than modern american horror).

either way, i'll watch anything kevin bacon does, tbh.

I Just Killed My Dad

there are a lot of people who will benefit from seeing this. i hope they all watch it, and learn something. the way that anthony handles expressing himself and his feelings is something i'm still learning how to overcome in my thirties and something i watched my brother go through, too. an affect like this isn't a sign that there's nothing there; it's a sign that there's so fucking much there that it'll choke you if you feel it.

go in without expectations and this is actually a pretty entertaining movie. not the least bit scary, but weirdly enough the social media/vlogging side of the plot was very convincing. not a lot of films manage to add believable youtuber type content creators but this one did, and that deserves a shoutout. also, one of the credits is "sara canning's hand double in that one scene" which made me laugh.

also there's zero political commentary from the two leads so idk what got FOX000's so triggered

nowhere near as good as train to busan, but also nowhere near as bad as some comments led me to believe. the car chase was hysterical, that alone made it worth watching. i do wish that korean movies could get english speaking actors that aren't. like. mediocre?? i mean i'm 99% sure i could do a better job based on my experience reading bedtime stories to my brothers and putting on character voices.

The Twin

honestly, this is passably good for the acting alone. it really holds the story together despite a lot of weakness. while teresa palmer praised the twist in an interview i read, it's been done before; variations on this trope have already explored it really well and this movie didn't really add anything new. it is stunning in its visuals and the red herrings work to some extent, but it does come up short. solid b horror!

i really envy people who think that professor xavier having a degenerative brain disease is unrealistic. i take care of two relatives with dementia. it's about as brutal as this movie is, except it's real.

that said, it was easier to watch than i expected, it made me cry, congrats to it. very r, multiple decapitations, my fave kind of superhero movie. either way i think more people need to read actual comics to understand the full spectrum of ratings and content they span, so they can stop thinking superhero content has a specific lane to stay in
