drama with a sci-fi setting, really. the actors did a good job, i got emotional more than once thanks to the female leads. not great, but not nearly as bad as some comments imply.

Criminal Minds: 16x07 What Doesn’t Kill Us

i like the way that they've played out sicarius's deterioration when it comes to his control in keeping his lives separate. it might be a little heavy handed if you don't like sequences like these but either way it's executed so well, like

  1. confrontation with the neighbor - huge disconnect and pause between imagination and reality
  2. morning encounter with his wife - tongue-tied between imagination and reality
  3. outburst in front of the kids - imagination bleeding into reality
  4. basketball scene with his wife - 100% in reality holding a gun on her prepared to kill her

that's so C L E A N i love it. i love zach gilford

also garcia getting some is the only thing helping me survive olivia and elliot STILL NOT KISSING IN LAW AND ORDER

good? not really. fun? absolutely.

Antlers

i think i would've enjoyed this more as a miniseries that had more time to fully explore the characters' backstories. some movies can stand alone with little exposition and they're impressive for it, but sometimes you just need backstory to care about characters. loved the body horror though.

Pervert: Hunting the Strip Search Caller: 1x02 Hunting the Hoaxer

love that slip of the tongue on donna's part calling her guilt "unprofound" l m a o. and, if you ever want to know whether someone truly feels bad about something they did: saying "it" destroyed "their" life is a big old narcissistic red flag.

re: milgram's studies, the first sample size was 40 men, between 20-50 years old, which is an incredibly small and not at all representative sample of the general population. furthermore, the psychologist talking about these studies fails to mention that the distance of the experimenter affected compliance in a number of the variations milgram conducted; when provided telephonic instructions (i.e., what the hoax caller gave), the number of compliant participants dropped to 21%. media has to start giving the full picture when it comes to scientific research, it's seriously irresponsible not to.

loved this, but the one thing i still don't understand is why keith tried pulling tess deeper while saying they had to go that direction when the mother came from that direction?? like was he just confused (understandable) or what?

Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story

the taglines and trailers for this were a little unnecessary; i think the director did right by the family and i'm glad that steven stayner's children and wife got a chance to tell their story the way they wanted it to be heard. hulu didn't need to market it as a mystery or salacious true crime story because it's not really a mystery for anyone familiar with the genre and certainly not one for anyone from that part of california. its a devastating story and it's a worthwhile watch even if you're familiar with the case (having the actors who played the brothers read interview transcripts was fascinating, honestly), i just think whoever decided how this would be advertised played into exactly what this series highlighted about the way media behaves around human tragedy.

my main criticism is the inclusion of the mitigation specialist's remarks about the stayner family history. i think that shouldn't have been mentioned at all unless it was going to get addressed by someone other than a member of the defense team.

honestly hysterical and upsetting all in one. doubt i'll ever watch it again because BOY was that bleak but it's great satire and well acted.

The Immaculate Room

mostly i take issue with this being tagged as a sci-fi film in the hulu synopsis - fox reality did this about 15 years ago for real (reality tv real anyway) in the form of "solitary" but the contestants did it just for 50k. so, the insane prize money in this movie was the only sci fi angle. it was watchable which i can't say for every movie i've opened on hulu. still, i've seen both kate bosworth and emile hirsch put on some incredible performances and they felt a little dialed in here. under-90 movies don't need to be great for me to be entertained, so i'm glad it was kept short at least!

Gone in the Night

could've been a lot better, especially in the sci-fi department; that just felt completely shoehorned in, and all the ideas you think might be the explanation for what's going on end up being better than the real one. i loved the cast, though! it just feels like they didn't have a whole lot to work with. also, i know it was entirely out of the realm of possibility for the character, but it would've been hysterical if winona's character really did just want that treatment. so the fact that it was just a strategy to escape was almost disappointing.

Bullet Train

aaron taylor johnson and brian tyree henry were the absolute best part of this movie. that and all the cameos i had no idea about because i went into the movie blind.

Smile

great score, good acting, predictable but enjoyable horror. the cat dies and i was very offended. also, no one's smile was as fucked up as caitlin stasey's, so that kind of ruined the scare factor as soon as her character was out.

Criminal Minds: 16x01 Just Getting Started

reid's absence is a bummer, but paget brewster spoke on that and said some really important stuff. if you're a fan of the show and the character, learning why the actor probably isn't going to return might make it much easier to enjoy the show without him, so i recommend looking that up between the two episodes of the premiere!

plus—fifteen years of reid's life unfolded on television. if any character arc has been done well, it's his.

either way, this season feels really good. being paramount+ it gets to be darker, and i like how everyone's acting is dialed up and the directorial decisions are solid. also rossi gets to say "shit" a bunch.

Inside Man: 1x04 Episode 4

dillon was the most likable character just saying

the way this progressed was kind of what happens when i have an edible at the start of a movie. it's all normal, then it gets a little messed up, then by the end i can't comprehend how it got to that point. but it was funny.

Inside Man

haven't finished it yet so can't say for sure, but i love the acting in this. all incredible actors playing people who are at times stupid, obnoxious, and pitiable. i've got emotional whiplash from how back and forth i go on david tennant's character in particular.

i mean, when i think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense as a story told by a ghost witch's rat familiar who inexplicably had a human skull.

also nice to see eddie redmayne playing someone other than a wizard again

pretty entertaining for a netflix film honestly, i always keep my expectations low. and for anyone who loves body horror like me, there's a fantastic scene near the end for that.

deadpool was one of the only comics i got into long-term as a teenager so i live for every fourth wall break the mcu gives me tbh. also tatiana maslany and charlie cox have such delightful chemistry i had no idea i'd be so smitten with a relationship after less than an hour of content

Luckiest Girl Alive

netflix doesn't give much except the brief warning in the corner, so a heads up: there are graphic depictions of rape.

i'll be honest, i watched this for finn wittrock with zero idea what it was about. it's emotionally exhausting and i'll never watch it again, that's for sure. but it's good, and having watched plenty of garbage acting just because i don’t respect my time for shit, i think the acting in this movie was solid. the moment in the car when connie britton's character tells ani that she disgusts her was the hardest one, probably because i've lived it. chiara aurelia was the standout for me. finn wittrock also managed a fairly nuanced line between good human being with love and compassion and self-absorbed person incapable of fathoming what it's like to be a victim of sexual assault.

Significant Other

honestly if you go in with zero expectations this is an incredible movie. it has everything i love in the genres it belongs in and then some. maika continues to enthrall me every time she's on screen, too.

Beast

i think with any other cast and slightly worse fx this would've been garbage. but sharlto copley and idris elba were awesome and the animal cgi was pretty great. i think the one thing that vfx artists still can't perfect is the way fur or feathers move through someone's fingers when they pet an animal tbh.

Morbius

i mean it could've been worse but no one's complaining about the part that i REALLY struggled to suspend disbelief for - he's a world renowned scientist with a blood disorder where he needs multiple treatments daily BEFORE the vampire shit and you're telling me they wouldn't be giving him access to treatment in jail??
