Kyle is not a villain. After last years domination and brilliant strategy of The Cookout, how was it wrong to be on the defensive about the possibility of a race based alliance being formed. SINCE IT ALREADY HAPPENED. You know who are the a holes? Michael and Brittany for weaponizing racism. That is what they did. Two weeks later and bring it up for strategic purposes. I love that Terrence sniffed that crap out. I was worried where this episode was going to go but I think what had to happen happened. Alyssa dumping Kyle — I guess she felt it was necessary. The audience response to Kyle leaving the house was sublime.

loading replies

@bob-frapples sublime? It was very light scattered applause. If you mean sublime because they didnt boo maybe but probably mostly whites in the audience. Many black viewers do think he is racist but I don't. He is just ignorant. BTW Alyssa and Kyle slept together again after the breakup and she also requested a pregnancy test.

I did not know about the post-breakup shenanigans. I only watch the main broadcast. Thanks for the info.

Ugh, Another Musical.
Another episode with no major or significance to further the plot.

My face was literally the same as Hermione Lodge during the intro when Kevin goes around singing.
But on the lighter note, nothing has made me laugh as much all week as 6 students awkwardly dancing in their seats in class.

I don’t think you know how to use literally properly.

Riverdale: 2x01 Chapter Fourteen: A Kiss Before Dying

It looks as though I will be watching this season for more of the same reasons: Veronica, Betty, all too rare appearances by Josie, and the intriguing psychosis of Cheryl.

Why does Jughead have a motorcycle? Where did he get it? When did he learn to ride it?
What's all this nonsense about the ambulance not coming? Why didn't Pop drive Fred to the hospital? Was the whole purpose of that just for the -drama- of Archie swerving all over town?
Why has Hermione Lodge done something of a 180 and not respect her daughter's intelligence and the fact that these "disrespectful" accusations Veronica's making seem to be one of the few things on this show that make a lot of sense?
What happened with Daddy Blossom in the barn or whatever? Is this something I've forgotten or some big upcoming twist?
Why did Fred Andrews have so many overdramatic fever dreams? Could they just not fill the air time? (I do love Veronica's wedding dress though).
Was Jughead not tipped off by the phrase "knock some heads together" that the Serpents methods might be less than peaceful?

What is your record for consecutive questions?

An amazing crossover, better than the first one. I cried when I saw Nadia's body and I thought that the killer would leave innocent. Again, another crossover that makes me desire watch Law and Order SVU.

I'm re-watching this episode because I started watching SVU (lol) and now I know this is the most disturbing case I ever watched in all these shows and why. In SVU, we normally don't see the victim's story, so we know only what happened and the seek of justice. But knowing Nadia in Chicago PD, all the things take another level as we pain as suffer seeing her death, we know how unfair this is and we almost want revenge. I cried again, obviously. Hard episode guys, very hard.

loading replies

While Nadia isn’t what I would call a major character on Blue I do not like this ending for her and it didn’t even happen on her own show.

Love the show but they never did much research with the movie years. In this episode Adam lies about going to see Great Mouse Detective (1986) to see Poltergeist (1982).
Beverly making Adam think the house is haunted so he would sleep in her bed and need her was pretty funny though. The line "where the F was the mouse ?" line by the Grandfather after Poltergeist was finished was hilarious.

loading replies

@jim222001 I agree with your continuity point. Adam is also wearing a Top Gun shirt in the movie scene which came out in 1986.

Did we really need the warning at the beginning about the graphic nature...etc. This showed workplace minorly predatory behavior. She never said no, didn't really show him she was disapproving. Yes he was in a place of influence. Yes he barely acknowledged her back in the studio. He is a jerk. But did I need to be warned?

loading replies

@gloom8 Thanks for educating me. My 7 year old's school workbook might ask you, "What was the major theme of this post?" I think the right answer is a) Did the show need a warning at the beginning about the graphic nature...

Oh yeah. It is right there as the first sentence of my comment.

What a fun movie! As someone who was born in the 80s, i can appreciate all the pop culture references in the movie. Great cast, with lots of laughs. I'll be watching this one again!

Oh lord, I could hear the pitch for this dog: "It's Backdraft crossed with Silence of the Lambs!"

It's like the writers had a "movie cliche" set of cards and would just draw a random hand each scene.

And don't get me started on Joe Anderson's performance...

I like submarine movies, and this is a really good one, with hints from "The hunt for Red October" and "Crimson Tide". Good cast, good acting, good action scenes and does not ignore the laws of physics.

An amazing season that ended with a shitty finale. I love Kaycee but Tyler deserved to win. The whole thing was poorly produced, rushed, I mean, cutting the speeches for a Soggy C proposal? At least Tyler got AFH, him and Angela were a treat this summer.

I am still annoyed that pauley and mark could not make peace to give abby the send off she deserved, but that was good nonetheless. We have officially lost the heart of the show. Seriously hoping we get to see pauley and michael together in something in the future!

@michaeldoone I completely agree. They haven't been in a scene together for a long time but I was hoping they could somehow get it together to make this sendoff work. But they didn't. And that is bothering me.

I really don't know what to think of this. It's one of the few programs I have ever seen that mentions the infamous HH Holmes. But if feels like rubbish. I't feels like a visual podcast, with all the semi dramatic pauses and music, and an awful lot of padding to stretch it out. And still leaves that question of "how true is this really"?

@peteo I especially liked the handwriting analysis that was inconclusive. They made that into a huge deal.

I don't like the time jump, but still I think this episode is very sad. When they start playing "A Bad Dream" and Ryan finds his photos with Marissa, it's a very emotional moment and I just can't stop crying.

I'm a big fan of this show. But killing Marissa off wasn't a good decision. She was special, misunderstood and wronged by the viewers. And she didn't deserve to die. I'm never going to get over this.

5.8/10. Let's start with the strengths. I really enjoyed how this was shot and edited. The rapid cuts and the use of shakycam helped give the episode a sense of constant movement, and it to not only keep the energy of the episode up, but to help convey the dizzying chaos of everything going on in the lead up and aftermath of the big game. That's the thing about this show that stands out in its opening salvo -- the way the images and rapid jumps between them, the snippets of conversation that are picked up and dropped and mixed together, give you a sense of Dylan, Texas as a living, breathing organism that's abuzz with the onset of football season.

I also thought the moment where the starting quarterback, Street, was hit and suffered a spinal injury was well done. The "announcers" laid it on a little thick, but for the most part the episode did a good job at capturing that hush, shock, and fear when one of these young kids goes down. Of course, there's the lesson of everything promising potentially ending in an instant, which I liked much better before the show called attention to the lesson with the voiceover at the end. But overall, the episode did a nice job at showing how something catastrophic like that can cut through the excitement of the game and leave everyone with a sick feeling in their stomach.

On to the weaknesses. My god, this is a boatload of cliches. It's a pilot, so a certain amount of leeway has to be offered in the name of the folks behind the series having to sell their show's entire premise in 45 minutes, but still. You've got the new coach who's laden with expectation to the point that he won't even buy a house for fear that he's going to be run out of town if he doesn't win. You've got the good boy QB with the right pedigree, the clean cut look, bright future, who says all the right things and dates a good girl cheerleader. You've got the cocky black skill position player who's constantly at odds with the bash brother-esque fullback who doesn't take his role seriously. You have the stereotypical bad girl who comes between the two backs and gloms onto anything with a future. And you have the humble, never-gonna-get-a-chance backup QB who finds his mettle at the right moment.

And then there's the on-the-nose scenes about wondering if God likes football and "Texas forever!" and the ladies at the book club, and the real estate agent hitting on the high schooler, and all this other Varsity Blues-level stuff that just feel culled from that latest stock football script. Having grown up in Texas, some of this is true to life if exaggerated, but it's all pretty rote at this point.

Too many people whose opinions I respect have sung the praises of this show, so I intend to stick it out. And there were some enjoyable bits here and there (Mack Brown's cameo as a booster was amusing in its way, and everyone in the Coach's house talking past each other had a realism to it), but overall this was not an auspicious start.

loading replies

Excellent summary. I think I enjoyed it a bit more than you did. I felt a connection to the show immediately but I've been watching Connie Britton on Nashville the last four years which is what brought me to this show today. Football scenes were done pretty well. At least the plays make sense.
