Human Planet

Amazing show! Some of the most beautiful images and stories of people living in wild nature that I've ever seen. From the deserts to the iceworlds to the jungles, it is unbelievable (literally unbelievable!) to see how these people go about their daily lives.

After seeing this show it makes you wonder; are our luxury lives really better than their poor, dangerous lives? If we can believe the behind-the-scenes interview with the cameramen the answer would be no: these people might live in the face of danger and die sooner, but they live their lives much fuller than our routine 9 to 5 city lives. Perhaps the best of both world would be nicest, but how to realize that? Food for thought!

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

After falling in love with My Neighbour Totoro by this same anime director, I decided to see if Nausicaa is just as great. And it is, but in a totally different way. It requires some fantasy on the viewer's part, and has a steampunk sciencefiction backstory, which will make it less approachable to some viewers.

This imaginary world dragged me into an epic struggle, where a young girl is forced to chose between her friends or her passion, between fighting or surrendering and between her country or her life. (For connaisseurs: it's like Dune). A wild ride follows where the girl finds her way and I was on the edge of my seat. At times the message to follow your heart, be eco and 'make love not war' was a bit overdone, but this epic story was so exciting and delivered that message so strongly that it deserved to be a bit preachy.

Amazing imaginary world crafting, beautifully drawn, a powerful message and just a great story. It sucked me right in and I'll be watching this over and over.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

A great parody on 60's and 70's James Bond movies. If you've seen those Bond movies, you'll instantly recognize so many of the, in retrospect, laughable plotlines, semi-evil villains, cheesy dialogues and oldfashioned special effects. Don't get me wrong; I love those Bond movies. But compared with 90's movies, they appear so old. And this parody just makes great fun of almost every aspect of it. Since it's a parody I won't go into the quality of the story, the acting, or presentation, because the only thing it should do is make you laugh. And for me that is just what it does, even 15 years after it's release.

Cheesy and predictable, but still it makes me laugh so hard!

My Neighbor Totoro

I'm 27 and I just saw this anime for the first time. In fact, it's the first anime I ever saw and I only watched it because a friend kept telling me how great it was. It had been sitting on my shelf for over two years and last night I figured: what the hell, let's try it.

This movie blew me away. It so perfectly captures the innocence and the exploratory nature of childhood. It enables you to view an ordinary day through the viewpoint of two ordinary young girls. It shows how boring we adults are, and how much fantasy, discovery, emotions and playfulness we have lost since we were kids. There's no macho behaviour, no bad guys, no evil to beat, just two kids growing up in a normal life, but extraordinarily presented.

A perfect coming-of-age movie and one of the most impressive movies I've ever seen. Already one of my all-time favourites. If the rest of Hayao Miyazaki's films are anything close to this, he will have a new lifelong fan.

Two and a Half Men

Good show if you're looking for mindless entertainment! Even though the characters are flat, the story is almost non-existing, and the jokes are virtually the same in every episode, this show makes me smile a lot. They chose a good starting point with Charlie, his brother and son living in the same house but with totally different lives, so strange situations are bound to happen, making it easy to make funny jokes about it. After a while it gets old, but it still leaves me with a good feeling most of the time. Too bad the lead actor messed up and got fired, I can't imagine the show still being funny with him replaced..

All in all: simple but effective entertainment.

Herman Finkers: Het Meisje Van De Slijterij

This guy always makes me laugh! Best standup comedian of the Netherlands in my opinion. It's not even his best show, it's 25 years old, but still so incredibly funny. My poor stomach muscles... :P

Beverly Hills Cop

As a kid I used to love this movie! I remember laughing throughout the entire movie and watching it over and over again. Now I've rewatched it and must say times have changed. It a decent action/comedy, maybe even better than most recent Hollywood efforts, but it's nothing more than that. If anything; it's a great look into the 80's. The theme music is legendary, Eddie Murphy's fast trashtalk, laughing and movements are iconic, and the whole interaction and atmosphere breathes 80's. Unfortunately the 80's are more than 20 years ago and this movie feels just as oldfashioned as Madonna's (then) revolutionary videoclips from that same time.. The rebel behaviour is not so rebel anymore, the jokes are rather lame, times have changed..

I still enjoyed it, but wouldn't recommend this as a great action/comedy, but more as a great example of a general 80's movie, just like Ferris Bueller and The Breakfast Club.

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure

Another great movie for the young and innocent! It's exactly the same as the first Tinker Bell movie, except that it's different ;) They could've fooled me though, still cute fairies everywhere, color bursting from the screen, happy happy joy joy, just the occasional necessary hint at drama, and the happy ending is to be expected. Again, the kids will love this! Disney delivers exactly what their target audience wants and does a great job at it.

Tinker Bell

Great Disney movie for the young and innocent! It's got cute fairies and happy endings written all over it, but that's exactly what it's supposed to be. I could complain it's not mature enough for me, the story isn't all that, but you know what to expect from this movie and it delivers exactly that. Kids will love this and it's my girlfriends go-to movie whenever she feels ill and needs to see cute innocent happiness.

Serenity

This film completes one of the best science fiction shows of the past ten (or twenty) years; Firefly. For some reason the show got cancelled and they had to resort to a movie to wrap up the story. This movie does a great job at that: all the unfolding storylines, character developments and mysteries that were introduced in the show are explored and explained to a very satisfying ending. The only complaint I have is that it would have been so much more fun to have seen it all unfold in a few more tv-show seasons instead of just one movie..

Firefly+Serenity is one of the best things I've ever watched!

My recommendation: go watch Firefly (even non-scifi people can enjoy it) after that you're going to want to see Serenity and you'll love it even more!

Herman Finkers: Dat Heeft Zo'n Jongen Toch Niet Nodig

The best 50-second entrance to a stage ever by a stand-up comedian!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCSvWLEi2WM

The rest of the show is only for Dutch people who can appreciate silly jokes and puns and so-called 'dry humor'. Luckily I'm one of those people and I've been laughing until I was crying and had to take a break from watching. My favourite stand-up comedian and a great show!

True Grit

This is quite a good day-in-the-life-of-a-bountyhunter western. It has mostly everything a western needs: an unsympathetic drunk with a good heart, sweeping shots of the prairie, slow buildup, some character development and the same morality most westerns do (an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind). Nice extra's are that a little girl turns bountyhunter, there are quite some funny moments, Bridges and Damon live up to their reputation and whenever there is some action, it's good.

Personally I thought there was too little action (at times I thought Bridges would never stop talking) and I thought it looked too polished and clean for a western. This film didn't make a lasting impression like for example Unforgiven. Then again; there isn't much competition for westerns these days, so I'm just glad to see a decent modern-day western!

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

This movie tries very hard to bring the same feelgood vibe as the first Mummy, but it fails throughout. I can't really nail it down, because it's got everything it needs: ancient villain, interesting backstory, over the top action and chases, cheesy dialogue and oneliners, unrealistic storyline, pretty nice special effects and romantic interests.

The only thing I guess is missing is some soul. I didn't really laugh once, I didn't care who won the end battle, I didn't worry if the main character would get hurt, I didn't feel any romance/chemistry between any of the characters. I just missed the fun.

Even the badass looking yeti's/dragons/hellhounds/zombies (I could go on..) couldn't make this right. This whole film just felt too formulaic and empty.

TRON: Legacy

The premise is good: experience life inside an arcade game.
The story was terrible: lots of plotholes, unfinished storylines, characters suddenly disappearing, solutions coming from nowhere, it made no sense at all.
The 'deeper meaning' was poorly brought: questions about perfection, uniqueness, daddy issues and human nature were briefly introduced, but left virtually untouched.
The acting was reasonable: at times The Dude annoyed me, but the actors did their best to make as much out of the horrible story as they could.
The atmosphere was good: if you can get over the fact that the world inside the arcade game looks like a neon/victorian clash with futuristic vehicles, it sticks with that consequently and sucks you in.
Music: awesome and very appropriate!
Special effects: just amazing! Loved the bikes, ships, etc.

Summary: Standard blockbuster, watch it for amazing visuals/sound and lots of action, but (as usual) turn your brain off before watching.

Awesome! The same greatness as Planet Earth (with beautiful pictures of nature and David Attenborough telling interesting things about it) but even prettier and more informative than Planet Earth. This is my new favourite!

Caprica

I finished watching it and did enjoy this as a decent sci-fi show, but not nearly as much as Battlestar Galactica. I guess it was a mistake to label it as the next Battlestar Galactica, because it's an entirely different kind of show and people will always compare the two and Caprica will always lose.
There were some nice concepts: V-World, Mono-theism and the mobster Adama's were all great. There were just two problems: the story moved too slow and they tried too hard linking it to Battlestar Galactica.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

This starts with a great concept about a robot experiencing human emotions and the consequences that would have. The movie also starts off pretty decent by showing how an emotionless robot is pretty scary, but how emotional humans are also pretty scary. Then it turns into a carnivalesque chase/quest, which is funny, exciting and looks amazing: great mid-story. There were a couple of ways I could see this end, so I figured it would lead to something great. And then, when I least expected it, I got to witness the worst ending I'd ever seen in a sci-fi movie (or Indiana Jones 4), guided by a voiceover (!) literally explaining the moral of the story over and over for 20 minutes.

I was willing to look over some plotholes and some annoying characters (yes teddy and mommy, i'm looking at you) because I liked the fact this movie made me think about what it means to be human. But the ending changed this from an above average movie to a terrible movie. It made me ashamed to be a sci-fi fan...

L.A. Confidential

LA Confidential starts off pretty slow, but gets better with the minute. The first half hour I kept mixing up names and places and didn't really get where the story was going. But after a while it picked up speed, the characters developed, the 'plot thickened' (as they say), and through all kinds of side-stories and personal quests it was slowly revealed where the story was headed to end with a bang.

The story itself is pretty decent, but has been done (many times) before. The good stuff about this film is the film noir crime feeling, which really adds to the suspense. The best stuff about this film is the amazing acting by almost the entire cast; they managed to give so much personality to their individual characters that they really lifted this film from mediocre to great!

Die Hard

The very definition of a perfect Hollywood action movie! It's got all the stereotypes I expect from an action film: German bad guys, over-the-top shooting/ fighting/ swearing/ running/ jumping etc, a hero with witty remarks, a cool black guy in a limo, some semi-romantic moments and the two key ingredients to any guys movie: titties and exploding helicopters!
I can't really say much about the story, the acting etc, because I don't think there is much to it. Let's just say it was decent enough not to have bothered me while everything on screen was exploding :) Yippee-ki-yay!!

Lost

Lost. A pretty accurate description of the writers after the first three seasons.. Season 1 was a great buildup, mysterious stuff happening all over. Season 2 gave some much needed answers, was awesome, and introduced some new mysteries. Season 3 tied up most loose ends, but introduced some unnecessary new questions. After that, well, they got really Lost.
It took them three more seasons to introduce uncountable plotholes, deus ex machinas all over the place, ruined all my favorite characters and still managed to not give any satisfactory answers.

Started out great, but the last time I was this disappointed by a tvshow was when Firefly was cancelled.

Snatch

I almost thought this was a great movie. The characters are unique, fun and intriguing. The story is different from the usual. The film-editing is eye-catching. I was almost laughing, almost excited, almost drawn into the story, but for some unexplainable reason it just didn't do it for me. I kept waiting for the film to turn it up just one notch, to suck me in, but it didn't happen. That just sucks, because I really liked the characters, the boxing/diamond setting and the squeaking dog...

Big Fish

A story that shows what storytelling is all about and why it's so important. I think it's expertly done: when they compare the 'fantastic story' to the 'factual story', you can't help but feel sorry for the guy who prefers the factual version and misses out on all the fantastical stuff. And besides that, it's just great fun to watch!

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Total classic! An emotional rollercoaster (intrigued by Jack Nicholson, angry at the nurse, excited about the escape, laughing at the boat trip, sad about some patients, amazed by the Chief etc etc) that very few movies can match. Great acting, great story, great filming, great setting, great everything; it just all comes together in this film. Everyone should see this at least once! At least!

Alien

A difficult movie for me to judge. The setting was beautifully done: the spacecraft, the Alien planet, steam hissing, slime dropping; the overall uneasy/scary feeling was great. But the characters running straight towards the danger annoyed me, the shock-moments were too easy and the biggest problem: I've seen too many movies that try the same thing, so it doesn't really work for me anymore.
Two pro's for Alien though: (1) I believe it was one of the first space-horror movies and (2) even though there have been many copycats, I don't think any of those copies have actually improved on the original Alien. I just wish I had seen this one first :)

Planet of the Apes

One of those films that I wanted to see because of it's 'classic' status. The special effects and action scenes didn't date very well, the acting is not great, and the story is filled with plotholes. But it still managed to capture my attention because of the original way it delivered its social criticism.
Watching those apes mistreat us humans, you can't help but think how stupid and unfair those damn dirty apes are. I really couldn't stand them. Until somewhere in the film you suddenly realize that those apes represent the way humans act nowadays, and that the way humans are treated in the movie is how we (used to) treat minority groups; slaves, heretics, women, animals etc. Ouch.. Suddenly the ape society is a mirror of human society, showing all it's errors. At times the morals are just too much, but I think it's a great social critique in a sci-fi setting.

Amazing! Everyone should see this! And I'm not just saying that because I'm an environmental hippie that likes to learn a bit more about nature, or because David Attenborough is a personal hero of mine, but the images are just so incredibly gorgeous!

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The ending to my favorite trilogy. I love everything about these movies: the acting, setting, costumes, music, the drama, the epicness, everything. It's the Star Wars of this generation, setting new standards and creating new fans. I guess some people think it's hip not to like them, but every movie-fan who hasn't seen it out of principle should at least give it a try and start watching Fellowship of the Ring. Maybe you really won't like it of course, but chances are you'll end up watching all the way through Return of the King and wonder why didn't do it sooner.

The reason I wanted to see this was to see some dark twisted fantasy about ragdolls living in a postapocalyptic setting, fighting for their lives. And that's what I got: visually stunning, beautiful grim environment, some nice action moments and a rather superficial story to tie it all together. The story moves pretty slow, almost to the point of boring, but the better parts made me deal with it and enjoy it all in all . Glad I saw it, won't be watching again, but sure hope there will be more 'dark' animated movies.
