Wanderlust

Forgettable is the right word alright. This movie is filled with cliches, not one original funny joke and the story is (as could be expected) very predictable. I thought I could have some laughs from this, but I was proven very wrong. Not recommended at all!

Dances with Wolves

Loved it. Beautiful shots of the American prairie and its animals. The story is slow at times, but there are so many great scenes that it's worth it. The story is done many times (pocahontas and avatar come to mind), but this is an excellent effort, where I genuinely hated the army guys and got really intrigued by the Indian way of life. Of course there should've been more nuances (not every Indian should be a good guy, not every American should be violence-obsessed), and the movie should've been shorter, but overall it's a great movie, with many many great shots!

West Side Story

Supposedly one of the greatest musicals on film. I have to agree that some songs, like America and I Feel Pretty, were really great and popped off the screen (with great lyrics, music and choreography), but the surrounding depiction of the story was terrible. It's starts with teenage gangs (played by 30 year olds) doing ballet-pirouettes to show how tough they are.. The Romeo and Juliet part between rival gangmembers is unbelievable as the two characters have barely met and just don't seem to care about each other. The clash between racially different gangs is an interesting plot, but is ruined by the ballet choreography and the lack of personalities within each gang. So some interesting elements in this movie, but they completely didn't match with the feeling they wanted to express.

Perhaps I just don't like musicals put to film, but I'd recommend seeing this on a stage, where they can probably capture the atmosphere way better than on a screen.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Let me start by saying that I really loved the previous three 'Pirates' films. They were a great mix of treasure-seaking adventure and humor, action and romance. They were the Indiana Jones of this generation.

While this fourth 'Pirates' movie has all the ingredients of the previous ones (with the addition of Blackbeard and man-eating mermaids), and even looks and sounds just as great, it seems like the magic is gone. For some reason I couldn't get involved in the story or the characters (old or new). Both the story and the acting seemed contrived (even more than before), meaningless and empty. Instead of the two hours of high-quality entertainment I expected, I got mediocre. Not bad, but I've come to expect more of it.

Unfortunately, this movie is easily forgettable. Not up to par with the previous installments. Let's hope they get their groove back in the next one.

Beverly Hills Cop

As a kid I used to love this movie! I remember laughing throughout the entire movie and watching it over and over again. Now I've rewatched it and must say times have changed. It a decent action/comedy, maybe even better than most recent Hollywood efforts, but it's nothing more than that. If anything; it's a great look into the 80's. The theme music is legendary, Eddie Murphy's fast trashtalk, laughing and movements are iconic, and the whole interaction and atmosphere breathes 80's. Unfortunately the 80's are more than 20 years ago and this movie feels just as oldfashioned as Madonna's (then) revolutionary videoclips from that same time.. The rebel behaviour is not so rebel anymore, the jokes are rather lame, times have changed..

I still enjoyed it, but wouldn't recommend this as a great action/comedy, but more as a great example of a general 80's movie, just like Ferris Bueller and The Breakfast Club.

The reason I wanted to see this was to see some dark twisted fantasy about ragdolls living in a postapocalyptic setting, fighting for their lives. And that's what I got: visually stunning, beautiful grim environment, some nice action moments and a rather superficial story to tie it all together. The story moves pretty slow, almost to the point of boring, but the better parts made me deal with it and enjoy it all in all . Glad I saw it, won't be watching again, but sure hope there will be more 'dark' animated movies.

Life of Brian

This is a cult classic, which usually means that people who grew up on it love it and people who now watch it for the first time don't get what's so great about it. With this movie I'm in the second group.. Sure, there are some hilarious moments, and sure, they mock the story of Jesus and rebel against the church. But the movie moves too slow and there were too few funny moments for me to really enjoy it. Always look on the bright side of life is brilliant though!

Rain Man

It's almost 25 years old, I've seen it a dozen times, and I still like it :)
The movie is slow, looks old, Tom Cruise is already annoying, but after a while this movie will make you laugh, make you wonder, make you lose track of time, and it's one of the best feelgood movies ever! Dustin Hoffman is amazing to watch in one of the most memorable roles I've ever seen.

Looper

A pretty great time travel shoot em up! Some decent action scenes, a pretty good story for a shoot em up and some terrifying ideas for time travel gone bad. It slowed down somewhere past the middle, but still had me on the edge of my seat for most part of the movie!

Sahara

Now this is your typical I-don't-have-anything-better-to-do-tonight-so-let's-just-watch-this movie. Everything about it is average: the story, the acting, the music etc. It does have a feelgood vibe about it, with suntanned people running around on yachts and beaches, so it makes for some decent entertainment.

Sucker Punch

Now those were 4 incredible videoclips! Too bad it was supposed to be a coherent movie, so as a movie it's terrible, but still.. I'm going to rewatch those 'dream parts', because the visuals and the music are amazing. Just don't expect a story this time :)

"Watched it last night, good old popcorn movie. Something to fill a couple of hours.."

I'm going to agree with this. Nothing special, just some shallow Hollywood action entertainment. Okay to watch if you're in the mood for it.

This Is Spinal Tap

It's hard to predict whether someone will like this or not. But I suspect you'll be able to tell within the first few minutes, when the documentary-maker introduces himself and the following docu. I wasn't sure what to expect except a 'mockumentary', but this was so incredibly lame, but so spot-on, that it had me laughing out loud. It's so boring, that I would call it over-the-top boring. And I happened to like it. The same goes for the rest of the movie; a spot-on parody that shows how boring and predictable 80's rockband documentaries were. I liked it a lot!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Since this was one of my favorites of the Potter books, I hoped I would enjoy this a lot. Unfortunately, this movie didn't give me the same exciting feeling the book did. In fact, the movie seemed pretty pointless, as there were hardly any character or story developments (which were present in the book).
The only scene that saved this movie for me was the introduction of Lord Voldemort; he seemed to be a real bad guy with scary looks, a bad attitude and an evil mindset. That was great. The rest of the movie not so much..

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Not sure why I keep watching these Harry Potter movies, since none of them has really worked for me. I guess I hope they'll get better as the story gets darker and I'm curious to see why they are/were so popular. In the books I liked part 3 and 4 (prisoner of azkaban, goblet of fire) the most, but figured the later books had more potential for movies.

As it turns out only the first two movies lived up to my expectations (childish, but more or less the same cozy atmosphere as the books) and in the others they couldn't portray the story, characters, atmosphere.. Well, pretty much anything, except the Snape character and the introduction of Lord Voldemort in Goblet of Fire, they are well done.
Hopefully the following movies can get some of the feeling of threat and urgency across, while maintaining the homely feel of Hogwarts.

The Sound of Music

Just saw this for the first time. I'm not a fan of musicals, so I was prepared for the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have to be in a certain mood to appreciate these golden oldies and must admit that it does feel a bit dated, but the feelgood sing-along atmosphere is still very effective. Great film about children and adults growing up, learning to have fun, against the background of a starting war. I'll be watching this again on a rainy afternoon :)

Mission: Impossible II

Lots of stunts, lots of slowmotion and very little story. Good thing I already expected this; now I could enjoy this as a mindless action movie. Wouldn't recommend it however, there are way better action movies out there. Best part of the movie is the great soundtrack!

Julie & Julia

I had no expectations about this, and was positively surprised. A feelgood self-discovery movie about cooking in the 1950's and blogging in the 2000's. Characters in different times use different ways to fill their lives with something they believe is meaningful. Had to get used to the Julia Child character, but gradually started to like her. Had the exactly the opposite with the Julie Powell character, she got less like-able every scene (I suspect this was intended). Really enjoyed this film and, more importantly, I developed a newfound love for butter!

The Secret World of Arrietty

Guess I was in the wrong mood when watching this.. Loved all other Ghibli films, but thought this was just boring and unimaginative (in comparison with other Ghibli). Will have to see it again another time, perhaps I'll change my opinion.

The Incredible Hulk

Mindless action, not much of a story. In my opinion Norton does a great job in the chasing scenes, and the Hulk action scenes look great (although they are too much and too long), but they don't really fit together in the same movie. I guess Hulk is great as a side character, but too difficult a character and story to fill a 90 minute movie with.
Conclusion: worst movie in the 'Avengers' series, and I won't be watching again.

Scary Movie

Yep, after ten years it's still a terrible movie, but still very very funny at times :D Goes without saying that it's only funny if you've seen the movies that are parodied (Scream, I know what you did last summer, exorcist etc.) Loved the Budweiser commercial parody: Wazzaaaaaaapp!!

Rango

First things first: the animation looks absolutely fantastic and the character design is awesome. Depp does another great captain Jack impression, which you either like or not. Lots of references to other movies, with the obvious ones being Fear and loathing, Pirates of the Caribbean and spaghetti westerns in general. The movie atmosphere feels very different from other animated movies, so I can only applaud the effort to shake up the genre.
But to be honest, it didn't pull me in. It tried to be too many things at once, and therefore failed at being really good at any of them. There were only a couple funny moments, the 'religious' theme was scattered and sometimes awkward, the Clint Eastwood vibe didn't go well with the funny side, the story was too simple for adults but too slow (and perhaps too dark) for kids.
Still I can recommend watching it, even if it's just for the visuals or the Clint Eastwood vibe. Just don't expect a masterpiece.

Into the Wild

Made me dream, made me wonder, made me think. Great commentary on the path dependency of modern society, making a strong case to escape civilization and live life more freely and adventurous. Also a great reminder that "happiness is only real when shared".

Aliens

Almost the same plot as the first movie, except they switched the psychological horror element of the main character for lots of action and explosions. An entertaining movie, but very predictable, not nearly as scary as the first one and not much character development. But it was what I expected from an action/horror movie. The only thing that really annoyed me however, was the fact that the Alien monster was supposed to be almost indestructible and in this movie they drop by the dozen. But if you can live with that and want to see a war movie in space, this is a decent watch.

Super 8

Like some other reviewers I almost liked it a lot, but something seemed to be missing.. There are some incredible scenes, a story that could be fantastic, the kid actors are very good, but somehow it didn't fit together for me. At the end of the movie I was not satisfied at all with the story (I also simply didn't like the ending, but that's another thing), and kept wondering what I missed.. Still not sure what to make of the movie as a whole..

Captain America: The First Avenger

I enjoyed it, that's for sure! A couple years ago this would have been a perfect superhero movie. Now, after Batman, Iron Man and the likes, it's just another decent entry into this genre. Very entertaining, but not really standing out. Looking forward to sequels and the tying up of characters in The Avengers!

Just Go with It

When the best part in a movie is a shot of Jennifer Aniston in bikini, you know what to expect.. It's not very funny and not very romantic. Just a movie to waste some time and quickly forget afterwards.

Jurassic Park

On a recent rewatch, it didn't look as impressive to me as it did all those years ago. I have no idea how this film would look to newcomers.. After a while though, I was looking at this film as if I was a kid again and loved every part of it. So I like it mostly for nostalgic reasons, but I think it's still one heck of a ride!

Flypaper

Simply put, it's a great "who-dunnit" mystery. The acting is good, the story is good, and most importantly for this kind of movie: the mystery was good. I didn't have a clue who did it until the very end. And on top of that, it's funny too!
