Star Trek decides to have some real fun for once in this pretty unique episode. A great chance for characters to stretch themselves in ways we haven't seen before: Troi in command on the bridge, Worf delivering a baby and Dr. Crusher needing to work with Geordi on ship's systems. And of course, Captain Picard having to deal with his biggest fear - children.
There's a lot of comedy here and it falls quite squarely into the fairly cheesy standard of Star Trek laughs. That is, very hit and miss and often stilted. Where it works (Worf and Keiko) it's absolutely fantastic, where it fails (the children in the turbolift, the two boys especially being horrendous actors) it's torturous. Great to see Ensign Ro back so soon after her debut, and again showing that she's doesn't quite fit the standard Starfleet officer mould with her highly argumentative side.
Since we never see the captain's new "commemorative plaque" again, I'm assuming there's a deleted scene at the very end of the episode in which once Picard is back in his ready room he drops the plaque in the bin on the walk back to his desk.
Absolutely beautiful. At the time, Trek was able to do stories that other shows couldn't (in today's TV landscape that's far less true) and this is a prime example. It works so well because Hallie Todd's adorable child-like performance, and Brent Spiner being able to play off that so well. Picard gets a great scene standing up to the Admiral, too.
Certainly made me cry, and laugh a lot at Riker's brief scene.
"i dont know you are but stand the fuck down"... Lol... Got to love her
I haven't been this intrigued by a show in this genre since Lost & Fringe were around.
Very brutal & dark in a lot of places. Lots of questions about morality & playing God here. This show has some serious potential & I hope it only gets better as the season goes along.
I really love the casting choices for this show. Excellent performances by all. Especially Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris. Even Trevor (Steven Ogg) from Grand Theft Auto V showed up only to get killed. Twice. Haha.
The background soundtrack was very well done & they even threw in a few different twists on modern songs into the episode that I really liked. "Black Hole Sun" on the piano & also "Paint it Black".
Fuggin' awesome.
Yup, this one's gonna be a hit. I'm already hooked & I need MORE.
