I'm half tempted to give this full marks just for daring to play Radiohead's Everything in Its Right Place during your typical military in dropship scene. Anyway my boy Gareth knocked out another cracking piece of scifi. You really don't mind when a director takes a few years off and comes back with something like this. There's certainly a fair amount of Rogue One, Blade Runner and Terminator in the mix, the latter of which he takes the Judgement Day plot and turns it on its head defying expectations where I assumed it was going just due to the tropes of the genre.
There's also a lot of stuff on screen for 80mill in comparison to other recent effects heavy films. Gets you wondering if budgets elsewhere escalate to $200 mill mark due to talent demands or that something like this has less behind the scenes VFX artists but take longer to bake? I dunno. Either way, check it out. The trailer gives too much away (as always my opinion) however there's plenty more that isn't shown.
NB. Watch out for the Scarif Easter egg
Yes, rating this a "1" before seeing it is a tad childish. But, given that I will never go and see this film, I feel it's fair to show my displeasure towards Disney given the direction this film seems to have taken.
It's a big waste of time. If you are reading this before watching it, please don't watch it. You can thank me later.
I can't give a star, i don't know what i watched for 100 mins.
Look no further, the cure for insomnia is here.....:sleeping:
I can only give it a single star, I wish I could give it less, negative stars even.
What an absolute waste of 100 minutes, I defy the reviewers here that say it is a polarizing movie, it really isn't, not even close, there is nothing to invest in, no characters to care about, nothing, this movie would have been better served by not being made at all and the makers should be ashamed of themselves for doing so.
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Skinamarink’:
Just, no. I went in with an open mind. But no. This was way too random for me. I need some semblance of a story, not a string-out of creepy visuals and sounds. If I hadn’t read the synopsis, I would’ve been even more lost than I already was. The toy phone scene is a perfect example of something eerie that existed for no particular reason other than to be eerie. No.
The interactions and reactions were not realistic enough. I understand this film was more of a mood than a story. More of a dream than reality. But there were too many characters talking to other characters without a proper response, if that makes sense. And no child would be wandering that house alone.
There is something here, somewhere. An original idea that may inspire future horror films. The familiar glow and hum of a TV that we wake up to from nightmares. That momentary feeling of helplessness. It was all supremely atmospheric, for sure. But there was zero payoff.
This isn't even a movie, it's a waste of time.:poop::wastebasket:
While watching I was thinking this would be better as a short and apparently it is, does have a few creepy segments. The best part was when a toilet disappeared and it made a cartoon noise.
Only watch if you enjoy a string of fuzzy still images of walls, doors and the floor. In addition to mumbling that is rarely understanding and no plot whatsoever.
This movie should be called Skidmark
I can’t believe how much this movie hates it’s audience. Truly aggressively awful and frustrating.
This felt like a self-absorbed film school project. Getting to the end was a lesson in tedium.
i think i prefer more fast pace movies, but loved the under the bed scene! definitely a really uniquely designed film
VHS coverage of walls and ceilings
Story: what story? It's art!
Characters: Nope. Let's focus on the walls instead.
Not scary in the slightest the only scares were jumpscares with loud music. I didn't care what happened to the two pairs of legs. If you're going to do a movie about a child's point of view put the camera on their forehead, not on the floor. The walls and ceilings got wayyy too much screen time. Painfully boring!
This was actually the worst movie I've ever seen.
Fuck this movie and everyone involved in it. You guys should be blackballed over this monstrosity. The constant arguing and loudly narrating everything that was happening by the actors, the ludacris plot with the little girl roaming around the house unsupervised while aliens are about and the jackass son filming it decides to go upstairs alone multiple times to do trivial things in order to put his life in danger, the fact that any rational human being would have abandoned the house when you saw with your own eyes the aliens entering upstairs, totally forgetting they should have left immediately after the first encounter but instead decided to have turkey dinner... I can't even man. This movie is so bad, that I seriously thought I was having a heart attack by the ending because I was so upset with how stupid and unrealistic the characters were written. Fuck this movie. If anyone involved in this project is still working in the industry we are in trouble as a society.
I have to thank again to all the "professional" reviewers for the bad scores. Without that, I would not even bother, as I'm not really a fan of Super Mario games. But wow, was this enjoyable and fun. Really nicely done, and they even stuck with the game logic. It has been a long time since I wished a movie was longer.
I was skeptical since the beginning, I’m happy to say I was wrong. Was it a masterpiece ? No. But it was a good movies. I think it was a smart choice to address the voice elephant in the room pretty directly, pretty early so you can put it out of your head and focus on the movie. I’m sure I’ll watch it again at some point and I am open to seeing a sequel should they make one.
Great movie . A must see if you grew up playing Mario and all the game’s associated
lots of haters out there, but I liked it a lot. I'm not a big Nintendo fan, but this movie was a charming adventure movie, just what I wanted. it wasn't super funny, but I preferred that, I don't want donkey kong fart jokes or anything, just want them to do Mario stuff, and it delivered. And Chris Pratt was one of the better voice in the movie, everyone cried when he was announced, but he pulled it off.
If you're a fan of the Super Mario Bros games (like I am), love Video Games, or have kids, I highly recommend this high fast paced, funny, and visually pleasing film!
A lot of critics didn't like it, but the Audience Score is at 95% for a reason! I love fun movies at the theater, and I bet you would too!
You could tell there was some competing creative differences being pushed together, but in the end it was as camp as the old Super Mario Bros Super Show. A fun time.
Charlie day as Luigi and Jack black as bowser. Suddenly this is one of my most anticipated films of the year.
Perfect from the beginning till the end.
In the movie you'll find any character and music of the games.
looks to be great. but i don't like how short it is. hopefully Nintendo will bring Zelda, start fox, Metroid to the big screen
Pure unadulterated fun for Mario fans of all ages. Leave your expectations at the door and just let this nostalgic experience sweep you off your feet.
The best movie of 2023 so far. Referential and fan service for sure, but isn't that what you want from a Mario movie? I've been pumping this into my brain since I was 5 years old, played every single iteration of the franchise and this was an absolute love letter to the series and for the fans. Those who know, know. Those who don't need not apply.
Was very entertaining for the kids and a nostalgia gold mind for the older crowd. Was expecting to be entertained and wasn’t disappointed. Great cast and they killed. Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Charlie Day just to name some favorites.
