Knock Knock

An absolute disaster.
This is a remake of a 70s grindhouse feature which I actually didn't know before watching it.
The grindhouse style over-acting was kept which explains that but he opted for a completely different cinematography which doesn't make any sense as it clashes into a complete shitshow.

Fargo: Season 4

The Fargo-spirit is weak in this one and it just feels like a basic run of the mill gangster drama.
Whereas true Fargo had characters that where just over the top for comedic effect here we see characters that are so severely overplaying that they feel cartoonish, yet the dark humour of the previous seasons is completely lost.
Without a doubt the worst of the seasons and they have strayed so far from the franchise now they should frankly just stop.

An absolute treasure trove of the prejudices Nordic countries have against each other.
Hilarious stuff and I loved every second of it.

Very enjoyable.
Solid performances throughout and and a heavy Black Mirror vibe.

I have absolutely no interest in watch-making whatsoever, yet this is one of the most captivating documentaries I've ever seen.

Underwater

I like this a lot more than I reasonably should.
It's by no means a cinematic masterpiece but it's a solid thriller that hold the suspense throughout.
If you wanted to be kind you could call it a homage to Alien as they basically copied the Alien plotline and set it under water.
As an Alien fan I guess that would be reason enough to hate it but I can't since they have done it really well and Kristen Stewart tackles the legacy of Commander Ripley spectacularly well.
Stewart totally nails it as a badass mechanic with a grudge against the world and the rest of the cast delivers as well.
Thoroughly enjoyable.

Gemini Man

A pretty basic action movie with an interesting pretence basically wasted.
Mary Elizabeth Winsteads character is added purely for decoration into a pretty mindless action driven plot with choreographed sequences that all look extremely unnatural.
There's obviously a shit-ton of CGI put into this but that's no excuse to have movement that look like video game characters on meth.

The Doorman

A cat goes missing on the 10th floor of an enormous complex.
After OPENING A F***ING CLOSED DOOR to a sealed room to search for it the next move is to go straight down to the basement.
If you have no appreciation for door opening teleporting cats I have bad news for you regarding the rest of the script as it is so bad no one even bothers to act.
There are action scenes and then there are plot holes.
Ali's niece pulls of real number by even giving an appalling performance in non speaking scenes, they must have dug up and resurrected Ed Wood just to direct her.
It is feat unseen since Alanis Morissette completely bombed her non speaking role in Dogma in -99.

The tagline for this is Be careful who you trust.
The only people you really should be doubtful of is anyone who recommends you watch this.

Hunger

Politics aside and from a purely cinematic standpoint this was very, very bad.
To call it slow paced is the understatement of the century, watching grass grow would be sensory overload compared to watching this.
There is no background given at all and no narration, it's just one 'artsy' shot after another, and the only enjoyable moment in the whole thing was the discussion between the Priest and Sands.
And that conversation is the only real insight to Sand's thinking at all throughout the film and that is a poor substitute for background and continuous narration.
I admire Fassbender's complete dedication to the role but one stellar performance simply isn't enough when the script really doesn't allow for anything to happen and even knowing the background and the events surrounding the hunger strike doesn't really help when you are given practically nothing.

Dark Places

This is like bad fan fiction based on the story of the West Memphis Three but with a feminine twist.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark

HBO missed the mark on this one.
This was marketed as the hunt for the Golden State Killer but in reality it's a biography about Michelle McNamara that's intermixed to a frustratingly low degree with hunting a killer.
The whole thing is poorly made with a lot of filler.
There is a substantial amount of time in this that's just text messages on screen not to mention that they use one specific scene from The creature from the black lagoon over and over and over again.
I'm not a Netflix fanboy by any means but I can't help wonder if they couldn't have made this a lot more interesting as this really is subpar.

The Red Sea Diving Resort

Was pretty stoked for this after seeing Raffs excellent miniseries The Spy but this turned out to be a huge disappointment.
What they had was a spectacular true story, one of the most amazing undercover operations of all time, the potential for a movie script was practically limitless.
They took that and watered it down through the Hollywood-o-mizer set to 11 again and again until all that was left was this crap and then cast Captain America in the lead to pretty much play Captain America.
A complete mess.

No Country for Old Men

It's a rare thing when you manage to find a book adaptation actually worthy of the book.
The Coen brothers have turned Cormac McCarthy's modern classic into a cinematic masterpiece.
Everyone involved delivers their parts perfectly and the dialogue is spectacular.
I've read the book and watched the movie several times, still it is infinitely rewatchable and ages like fine wine.
One of the best movies to come out this century and in my opinion the Coen brothers finest hour.

Suspend all disbelief, crank the volume to eleven and enjoy the ride.

Cold Pursuit

Usually when there's a remake in Hollywood it's at least a slightly different take on the original because the movie is made by different people.
Here they just gave the same director the task of making the same film by letting Baldwin Americanize the script which for some reason watered it down in all the key points of the original.
In Order of Disappearance which is the movie this is based on is one of the best movies to come out of the Nordics in recent years and there is no justification for a remake at all.
The only reason this isn't complete shit is because the original script is so solid there's just a limit to how much you can mess it up.
Do yourself a favour and go watch the original, it's better in every single way.

Midsommar

This was so awful it was almost physically painful to suffer through.
The only thing keeping my attention is that is was all so completely absurd that it was unintentionally funny, I have never laughed so much at at horror film in my life and there is not one intentional joke in there.
Watching Pugh give a classy performance throughout this train wreck of a script was like watching a gold medallist swimming through a septic tank.
The fact that they shot most of the film in Hungary would explain the fact that they managed to fuck up any and all reference to Swedish culture and traditions as they could have asked a five year old about some of the things if it'd been actually shot in Sweden.
But shame on me for getting to the point that I didn't think it could get any more ridiculous or stupid because enter blood-sacrifice bingo stage left.
1/10. Have been more scared by Shaun the Sheep episodes.

Leave No Trace

A slow burn but man it's worth it. A beautiful film that really hits you where it hurts.
Fosters skills are already solidified but McKenzie I'd only seen in Jojo Rabbit previously but this is an absolutely stellar performance.
One to watch out for in the future for sure.

Dark Waters

A compelling true story expertly delivered.
It's already a slow burn to begin with and the pace drops considerably as we get closer to the end.
The cast all give excellent performances and the cameos by real life victims of this corporate sanctioned poisoning are a very nice touch.

Coming from Jojo rabbit to this the only reasonable conclusion must be that Taika Waititi is a genius.
Story is spectacular, performances are solid and the scenery is absolutely majestical .

A very interesting and compelling story that is conveyed by a very poorly written script.
It polarises between melodrama with the victimisation of Jewell and his mother and the slutty journalist that sleeps her way to a first page story (for which there is no evidence) and the over zealous FBI agents that will go to any length to convict Jewell (which is not how it went down at all).
So between the shock value (that's made up) and the melodrama there isn't enough to turn a great story into a great film.

Charlie's Angels

This is so awful it's embarrassing.

Banks has written a script so bad not even Patrick Stewart can deliver his lines convincingly.
Either the costume designer for this had a stroke or Banks simply raided her wardrobe from The Hunger Games franchise and the score is so insufferably dreadful the musical director should be beaten to death with his/her own limbs.
The whole thing is so juvenile I really think they missed the mark rating in at PG13 as that excludes most of the target audience.

Jojo Rabbit

Absolutely speechless. Without speech.
This was the darkest, craziest, sickest, most glorious and magnificent thing I've seen in ages.
Even the children's performances are completely outstanding and the whole thing just flows seamlessly between laughter and tears.
I will actively be looking for an excuse to watch this again.

In Bruges

A masterpiece of dark comedy and a personal favourite.
Snappy dialogue, excellent chemistry, great acting and a setting so sublime it's like a PR stunt for Bruges.
I actually visited because of this movie and can confirm that everything Gleeson says about the town is factual.
I knew I was awake but it felt like I was in a dream.

A Vigilante

This just wasn't very good at all. It has the aura of a made for tv Lifetime feature.
Extremely predictable.

Somehow there's a punching bag mounted in every motel room she stays in and that's really the only premise the audience gets for her being a total kung fu badass.
It's like they realize how they couldn't possibly justify how she suddenly went from panic attack abuse victim to Ms Wick so when she finally confront her abuser they simply cut to him being choked out on the floor despite he being twice her size and her having one of her hands broken.

Collateral

I just rewatched this and the fact that it still holds up as one of the greatest thrillers of the post millennium era is a testament to its greatness.
Easily Manns best work and Cruise and Foxx really shines throughout.

Brightburn

This was unbelievable weak considering what could have been done with a villain wielding superman powers.
Spectacularly bad acting throughout.
Just like a pre-set clock BB turns evil the second he hits puberty and gets ordered by his space overlords to take over the world.
And as we all know the best strategy if you want to take over the world is to kill your immediate family.
No, what's supposed to go for plot here is completely laughable and with such a terrible performance by the lead this never gets scary at all.

Cop Car

Spectacularly bad.
The plot progression is a veritable snoozefest and the kids are so stupendously stupid it's really beyond all belief.
By the end of this I couldn't relate to any of the characters and really didn't care what happened to either of them.
Bacon plays his part well but with a script as weak as this he's not going to work any miracles.

Stockholm

It's like someone was told the actual story while in the early stages of an epic bender and then fourteen whiskey shots in he decided to scribble down what little he remembers on napkins with crayon.
Waking up the following morning with a hangover like the spawn of satan and with a pocket full of smeared napkins he writes the script for this movie and actually manages to get someone to fund it.
But still, regardless of how far from actual events this actually is it is surprisingly bad with actors like Hawke, Strong and Rapace really delivering sub-par performances and regarding casting it's hard to imagine a worse choice as Olof Palme than Shanti Roney.
If you're interested in what actually happened, read a book and if you're looking for a heist movie you'll be hard pressed to find a worse choice than this.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Since the complete degeneration of the F&F franchise my expectations where low but still it managed to disappoint.
Halfway in I though to myself: well at least they're not doing the completly over the top ridiculous car stunts.
Cue the car stunts.
Two thirds in I thought: well at least the script doesn't seem to be written by a couple of fourteen year old on weed.
Cue the American wrestling and total demise of any coherent plotline.
