Bummed to hear they discontinued the Scro-guard
Explaining cancel culture to Anne Frank. This show doesn’t miss.
Some payoff, lots of well-shot edge-of-your-seat action and we finally have our first monster kill!
Not sure what other people were expecting... I thought it was the perfect blend of humor, action, gore and even some heart.
At 93 minutes, it was a lot of fun and didn't drag at all.
They’ve gotten so good at subverting even their subversions to keep things fresh
That "pay it forward" skit at the fast food drive-thru is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time
Those hookers were looking FORWARD to it
You don't hear that too often
[7.4/10] I appreciate the meta-gag of Dee admitting she doesn’t really know what a satire is, because it works on multiple levels. It works to highlight how folks with backwards material hide behind the fig leaf that something is a “satire”. It pokes fun at the squishiness of the term. And it’s especially amusing since “Risk E. Rat’s Pizza and Amusement Center” is itself a satire of out of touch people pining for “the good old days” without acknowledging that a lot of the changes they lament happened for good reason.
I’ll admit that the episode is more of a “smile at the cleverness” outing for The Gang than one full of laugh out loud gags, but I still appreciate it. Mac whinging about the lack of dangerous weapons and faux-drugs available to kids at the ticket counter is gentle but still pointed. While a little blunt, I also like his time out psychology session as a satire on guilt and shame based discipline, which comes with extra potency since Mac was a self-hating gay man for a long time.
Dee and Frank’s search for the clues that get you a meeting with Risk E. Rat himself was a nice opportunity to spoof the dated humor of Franks time and Dee’s childhood. I especially like the Dee material, because she's the only member of the group who’s kind of in the middle. She criticizes the domestic abuse humor Frank enjoyed as horrible, but still tries to defend the ethnic stereotype humor of her childhood as somehow alright. It’s a well-observed bit on how it’s easy to look back with derision on the blindspots of old while we try to excuse our own. And the most I laughed at was at their misunderstanding and attempts to dirty up the “jalapeno business” joke.
Dennis and Charlie’s story leans into a lot of the same material, but it’s good. Their steady realization that pretty much every member of the Fun Time Pizza Band knockoff was some kind of unfortunate stereotype or trope, while trying to justify their appreciation for it, is a solid bit. And across all the stories, their disregard for safety is a laugh.
My favorite part is the great jumpcut from The Gang’s quest to return things to how they were before to an utter shitshow of pain and misery. Frankly, I worry this episode will be a little too subtle for some, with folks taking Mac's speech in particular as a valid criticism rather than a sign of his own messed up upbringing. But the fact that their plan ends in total disaster is about as strong a rebuke as the writers can offer to their viewpoint without having some character be a mouthpiece, so I’m good with it.
Overall, the theme of misguided good-ol’-days-ery through the conceit of a Chuck E. Cheese equivalent is a good foundation for the episode, and a collection of good observations and strong capper makes this one a winner.
Jesse and Walt will now forever be called 'Malcolm and his dad'. Fucking hilarious.
Fun fact: the film was originally going to be called 23 Bridges, but Jeff and Beau pulled out last minute. Real fact: the film is awfully generic; a shame, as the cast is amazing.
Flat, boring, unengaging. I waited over a year for this and was disappointed. This is another case where a film with a unique concept never managed to grow into something bigger. It's like taking a good short film and stretch it out needlessly. The experience of going through 'spooky' internet videos and playing it constantly evoke a good sense of discomfort, but it can't quite make for a compelling narrative. The story may be relatable to some audience but it's clear I'm not part of those audience.
Another forgettable light comedy - but Claudia O'Doherty is awesome in this
A bit quieter than the previous episodes but it's still on the theme, revisiting old links and perhaps hoping to change the outcome for the better this time around.
- I had this particular strong response to the major motion picture "La Bamba." I didn't want him to get on that plane. Ritchie!
Same. :sob:
One of those episodes that makes one feel stupid for not being able to follow the plot.
Two of the worst things combined: cops and media about talking dogs. Feeding children pro-state propaganda while they’re in diapers is pathetic and they didn’t even bother making it interesting. What happened to the Backyardigans? Arthur? No one puts any effort in children’s shows anymore. Disgraceful.
Hope next week we get the full Lamb-Ho buddy experience, their moments this week are all comedy gold but not nearly enough!
And that cliffhanger... next one is really going to be some shit-hit-the-fan penultimate ep.
Like a conservative senator with his wife, this movie says being a mother is the hardest job in the world but only so he can continue making her life a living hell.
There's a lot to love about this movie... Just kidding, there's only one thing and that's the incredible tsunami of talent that is Laure Calamy.
In À plein temps / Full Time, she plays of the single mother of two and the director really hates her because he basically throws shit at her for 90 minutes until she drowns in it.
The frantic pace of the film lends an easy comparison to Uncut Gems (Unka Jams!) but that turns out to be erroneous because the Safdie brothers genuinely like Howard Ratner. They let him catch some breaks, allow him some optimistic moments, and sincerely want good things to happen to him. It's not the Safdies fault that things turn out for Howard the way they do.
On the other hand, in Full Time, the constant onslaught of suffering Julie has to confront and the total absence of hope mean the film resembles less Uncut Gems than it does A Serbian Film. In fact, I 100% bet the director wanted to call this movie A Serbian Femme but no one would let him.
Watch this movie so you can appreciate Laure Calamy's stunning performance, but don't be afraid to call out the faux feminist message. This is not a tribute, it's a eulogy.
Wayne has the worst survival instincts of any TV character I've ever seen lol
Basically a Madagascar spin-off. I don't know what I was expecting but this was clearly aimed at kids, doesn't do much for me. The animation looks good, familiar themes with a fresh coat of paint, characters are the usuals, decent voice cast, a few funny moments. I get this weird feeling once i've finished it like something was missing. Very average.
Fuck this episode for making me rewind to check her hand and then not showing both her hands.
What the f I can’t read shit on that phone screen why are there no subtitles?!?!
All our suspicions about Other John & Other Jane are confirmed! They were always meant to kill John & Jane -- the first time just unexpectedly didn't work out.
Jane had one bullet left at the end but there were three shots fired when she confronted Other Jane outside the Panic Room, which sounds grim. But if they want another season, Jane got hold of Other Jane's gun, shot Other Jane, possibly Other John again.
John's mom knows more about life than any of these other people.
I'm still mad about Max.
The haters are going to hate this movie. Mostly because they just default to hating Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel. Come in just looking for things to hate. But this movie is a LOT of fun. Go in in a light hearted mood. Numerous things had me laughing out loud in the cinema.
The end could have been wrapped up a bit faster.
And OMFG THE MID-CREDITS SCENE!!! OMGOMGOMOGOD!!! (there is no post-credits scene).
I heard people saying they were out of character but I really don’t think so.
Ed is realising more and more how much he dislikes violence and it makes sense he wants to avoid that since Stede is increasing in typical pirate-ness
When he said “last night was a mistake” he meant that he thinks them having a proper relationship is gonna make him be a bad person, not that he doesn’t love Stede
I would never have thought that Izzy can sing
I got the feeling that the entire series is made to try to justify that scene on the ship, and yet it absolutely makes no sense whatsoever. The explanation that it was the only way to get the hard drive is completely ridiculous. With all the current technology, the author has to be really clueless to think that the best way to obtain that hard drive is by assembling, in 6 days, a gigantic version of an experimental technology still in testing, and have it work.
Very slow start but captivatingly told. There's great level of detail to give it as much authenticity as possible. Although, the budget isn't GoT level high and there's a lot of green screen at play here (yet with decent quality). But it's an engaging story that unfolds in these two opening episodes.
However, it's a show that is best watched 2 or 3 episodes at a time. Drawing it out on a weekly basis will undoubtedly lose viewers on a show that is quite dense with intricate relationships, personal agendas and history. Making this probably a show that will fly under most viewers radar besides the fact that this is mainly with Japanese audio and high quality English subtitles (which I personally love that way).
I'm a huge fan of SF and AI based plots - I was really looking forward to seeing this but it was a frustrating disappointment. It has terrible horrible shamefully bad writing. Not a single original idea about AI and in fact they don't really deal with AI apart from robots basically being exactly like humans but nicer. No original futuristic sci-fi ideas either with a lot of the futuristic stuff not making any sense. For example the AIs speak to each other in English, no super fast data pours between them. They can't even speak remotely over cellular or whatever... they use walkie talkies lol. They had an old women robot that limped around though the robots do not age?!? I could have forgiven all of this in the 80s or from an adaptation of an Isaac Asinov novel but we're in 2023 and we've all watched the Matrix etc... Also it had very little action and the action sequences it did have were bad and boring with yellow lazer tracers zapping around in the near dark or fog. Visually it was ok and the score was decent but the poor writing completely ruined it for me. Half way through, I couldn't wait for it to end. You can't be a serious Sci-fi fan and think this is any good, it's just not possible... yes that's you good reviewers.
