so im just supposed to go on with my life after this?????????
This is a smart, funny and very entertaining movie with a killer soundtrack. The soundtrack has a little bit of everything and is choreographed perfectly into the action. Ansel Elgort is great and so are Kevin Spacey and Jon Hamm.
EDIT: Saw it again and it is still just as great.
Zoey Deutch must be tired of carrying everything good about this movie.
A sequel that falls into the mistakes that the first part avoided. The parody turns into self-parody and the characters end up being caricatures of themselves. The action is repetitive and although new characters are introduced, they do not really add anything. Not even T-8000 zombies are taken advantage of by a script that evidences a significant lack of new ideas.
Subtle, imaginative, and well-told story that doesn't rely on big-budget effects or a body count. Original, unique concepts weaved together for an enjoyable movie. If you're looking for high-tech space battles, fast-paced action and death -- this isn't that kind of SciFi -- move along... ;-)
If you're looking for an action and "turn brain off now" film, just don't watch it and spare us the 6-7 hearts review.
I for one, am very tired from 500$m crap like Indi Day and Marvel's poop. So I was very excited to watch this one.
This one is more like Spielberg's Encounters from the Third Kind. It's more about the characters in the film and the amazing journey they go through. It's mostly about the human behavior that will make you think.
While it's not an End of the World aliens movie like Battle: Los Angeles, it still offers great amount of military presence and plenty of stuff that's going on.
So if you actually want to care about an intelligent movie and use your head - go. Otherwise, go watch an X men.
Highly recommended for some audience 10/10.
2-feb-2017 edit: Just came out on Bluray and I saw it again. Definitely keeping my rating.
Watching again at July-2023, excited towards Dune II : Excellent. Excellent film. So called plot-holes listed here are negligible when the overall product is really thoughtful and masterfully crafted.
An absolute must-see, but best seen without paying attention to any plot synopsis or spoilers for maximum effect. This is one of the best films I have seen in quite some time, and certainly one of the most surprising. Don't let the long running time or subtitles put you off. I'm saying nothing more in fear of giving something away - consider me spellbound!
just give elsa a girlfriend already
As an independent film, I think it's actually quite good. However, as an adaptation of one of my favorite books, I have to say it's terrible and was a massive disappointment.
What am I going to do with you, Batman? You've destroyed a perfectly good giant robot castle.
- Joker, in Sengoku period Japan.
I think the quote sums this thing up well enough. I like Japan in general, I love anime, I can appreciate the creators for who they are, I can even appreciate certain elements like the style and the animation. I'm also aware that cartoons often "displace" Batman, in time and/or in space. Having said all that... ooooooh boy, is this a mess. It feels like there were too many ideas and nobody was willing to let any of them go. If you're not bothered by so many staples of Japanese history / popular media all appearing in one movie, brought to you by some of your favourite DC characters (probably including more people from the Batman universe than any one movie should) - go ahead, you'll have a blast. If anachronistic mishmash in general disturbs you, you best stay away from this one.
A small preamble - in my opinion "Little Witch Academia" already deserves praise for being an anime deviating from the norm, a piece of art that indicates hope for the revitalization of the whole anime industry. And even more so, if we keep in mind that the original story (short film) was released 2013 as part of the 'Young Animator Training Project's Anime Mirai' project, its second movie was entirely realized due to crowd funding, both attempting to showcase an exceptional, magical fairy tale of a young girl, striving to become a great witch.
I know this is targeted towards the Furry community but I (a non-furry) did enjoy it. It's like Zootopia but for adults lol.
Just a content warning for people like me who didn't know the details of this crime before watching: the first episode features explicit footage of a gruesome real life death. There is no cut-away and it isn't a recreation, but actual footage that shows someone dying terribly in real life. It would have been nice to know this in advance so I could have at least looked away. It's ethically extremely dubious to show footage of someone's final terrible moments for entertainment like this and of course also potentially deeply disturbing. Anyways, having only seen 1 episode so far, that is all I have to say at this point. Be warned. A less exploitative documentary would have cut away, this one does NOT.
I'd give it one star if not for Jake Gyllenhaal performance. Such missed opportunity with this outstanding cast. Some of the characters were very interesting, the rest were meh. The horror part of the movie was the worst. It could have been sooo much better. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone.
Velvet Buzzsaw tries to juggle with too many balls in the air. There's the message ball, the satire ball, and the horror ball and, as anyone will tell you, if you have three balls, none of them get enough attention.
This was a loud non stop chaotic trip. There were very few breaks to catch your breath. Some people are going to hate it. Adam Sandler is terrific, it's great to see him doing something different than his normal Netflix crap. The music is trippy.
The Fall is a visually spectacular movie: breathtaking cinematography, and beautiful colours and costumes. Still, that isn't all it has to offer.
The movie has two storylines: the realistic setting where a girl with a broken arm meets a suicidal stuntman (Lee Pace) in the hospital, and the world of the story he starts to tell her. Though the stuntman develops a fondness for the girl, the reason he tells her the story is to trick her into getting him morfine so he can commit suicide. The story he tells her is chaotic and ever changing and though some people may not like this, I thought it really represented how spontaneous storytelling works. The boundaries between reality and fantasy become increasingly blurry because of the girl's interuptions and as the movie goes on the story starts to reflect the stuntman's life. At one point he asks the girl whether she is trying to save his soul and that really captures what this story is about. There is no reason for running away screaming from such a cheesy theme because it is handled in a moving but surprising way.
Lee Pace was amazing playing the suicidal stuntman but the heart and soul of the movie was the little girl. Their interactions had me going through a rollercoaster of emotions, moving from laughing to crying in a matter of seconds.
This story will stay with you long after the movie is done.
It looks like your average high school movie at first, but don't let it fool you, it's a lot smarter and funnier than that. It plays nicely with the genre tropes, is filled with John Hughes references and Emma Stone just nailed that role. All in all it's very charming and funny and entertaining, and even enjoyable when watched again
IF YOU THROW ANOTHER MOON AT ME I’M GONNA LOSE IT
Great Spiderman movie and Tom Holland is a perfect fit for Peter Parker. Hearing the score as the movie began got my blood tingling, loved the remix.
Action packed and well done story with Michael Keaton as a fantastic villain to the friendly neighborhood Spiderman. And a great addition to the Avengers.
In 2008, i saw "Cloverfield" for the first time, i had no idea about what the movie was and a i didn't know i would love it, the simple script and the found footage style made as an imersive and amazing experience, i really enjoyed.
8 years later and the same producers come back with a semi-sequel, i guess that's how i can call this film, in january i didn't even know this movie was coming out, i tought it was weird cause they were using Cloverfield in the name, so i saw a small teaser and i was surprised that this film was totally different from the previous one. The filming style, the atmosphere, everything from the predecessor was gone.
New filming style (which by the way is a beautiful cinematography), new atmosphere, new characters, new story. Dan Trachtenberg's first feature film is just amazing, very competitive and stylish direction, everything works on this film, the simple script works along with the cast of three. Mary Elizabeth Winstead outstanding as usual, John Goodman on one of the best works of his career and John Gallagher Jr. i never saw acting but he surprised me.
The atmosphere created in the film is just great, caught my attention in every second, the shadowed cinematography and a very imersive soundtrack by Bear McCreary makes it almost perfect.
The third act rushes a little bit, and the ending may have some mixed receptions, i liked it. (Obs: don't watch the trailers, it may have too many information and ruin your experience).
10 Cloverfield Lane is one of the best psychological thriller movies of the decade, terrific and almost perfect. Go see it.
Messed me up in the best ways. Unreal film, needs to be watched with zero spoilers to have full impact.
Great movie, I loved it. And the less you know about it before watching, the better.
Good acting, it is a shame they went with the Scooby Doo writers guild. They had so many options for the writers to do more than making just another cop show. Zombies, crime writers, cops from the future, people with amnesia all fighting crime. Seems that the only professions that exist in TV land are cop, cop sidekick, doctor or lawyer.
This is almost on comical levels of adaption and overall movie quality similar to The Last Airbender and Dragonball Evolution. The only slightly good thing about this is Willem Dafoe as Ryuk and he only has like 15 lines.
Don't watch it. It's a bullshit adaption and a shit movie. Don't reward Netflix by watching this.
Really loves the world, but the episode makes the characters feel such pawns to the plot and world-buildings instead of fully realized characters (I know the situations mean the people in this story are subservient, but it would be nice to have them extend beyond their archetype details so the horror of this story hits home more), so that I wasn't quite the whole way emotionally engaged, although the world disturbs me in a good way.
I don't think there is anything particularly special about this indie. The two leads are enjoyable especially Elijah Wood who is very funny. The tone is very inconsistent and gets a little too serious in the finale, but its an enjoyable Netflix watch.
I don't like the mechas and I hate pink/green/purple/blue-haired people. I don't even watch too much anime. But this one... I LOVED IT. It was brilliant, and got me hooked from start to end. I watched it all in four days.
