Review by TheDarkSide2024
What a collosal waste of time. If this is what passes as horror today I am so glad I grew out of that phase way back in the 80's.
It was literally like there were two sets of writers and directors, the first writer/director who wrote the beginning with the character Keith in it seemed to have something going and it certainly made it creepy and had me wondering what was going to happen but then once Keith was gone it was like they brought in a new writer and director who had no clue where to go with the plot or how to finish the movie.I was starting to wonder if half way through the movie I had somehow switched to another movie that seemed to have completely lost the plot.
The "Barbarian", I assume was the grotesque woman and not the man kidnapping women?, was creepy looking but hardly scary at all and wasn't used enough. I mean, really, they want us to be on the edge of our seats because she wants to keep them as her baby and feed them?? LOL
The guy kidnapping the women and who created the whole set up is some decrepit bedridden old man who can barely hold his pistol to kill himself and he was the only scary one :D
When the homeless guy says there is something even worse than the creepy lady I kept waiting for it to appear, maybe THAT is what the "barbarian" was going to be and would make it all worth the while to watch this movie.... nothing... crickets. Did they forget they mentioned it? or was it so uninspiring and forgettable I compeltely missed it?! :D :D :DThe sad thing is I usually read reviews first before watching a movie/show so I get at least some idea if it is worth it or whether it will interest me or not and when I saw consistant positive reviews (and 7 or higher ratings) I figured it was worth a shot. Really?? C'mon, someone could have warned me this was crap!!!

@veganaf I’m guessing the “something much worse” down there, that he’s talking about, is the old guy who raped and murdered a bunch of people for decades and the offspring and inbreeding he eluded to.
Great movie, who says otherwise, is a bit silly

@spuppolsenpai the only silly thing here is your comment.
What's with the bad votes it didn't even come out yet-
Edit: Fair enough.

@kuuzo the question is why does trakt allow this to happen. Rating before the movie is out should not be a possibility
Cinematography, acting, score - all great. Too slow, moody and artsy for my taste. It's hard to tell what is real, a dream, a flashback or a hallucination and pretty quickly I stopped caring. It's categorized as a mystery but it seems to me they reveal it all by the beginning of the second episode. Lasted about 10 minutes into episode 2 then shut it off. Even my hun who usually likes slow depressing shows was not very captivated and agreed to stop watching....

@hirkiti abuse is a depressing subject to build a movie around. I agree also that surreal quality is pretty artsy and sometimes hard to follow as well, but I get it. Stylistically it informs us that the past is always with us. You can't shake it no matter how 'safe' the environment might seem. I think those dream like touches and the presence of all those 'ghosts' are all about how trauma lingers in the present whether it happened last week, last year or even a generation ago.
The first episode took away any desire to watch this show.

I think you should give it another chance. Now that all the episodes are available, it may be better as a binge watch.
It's really important to spread the awareness of how grooming works and that, if it happens, it is most likely someone the parents and children know/respect/trust/even love and that not only the children are targeted, but also the parents, who need to be manipulated as well in order for it to work. But this documentary was poorly and tastelessly executed (Who thought these reenactments in the style of home videos from the 1970s were a good idea?) and failed to inform on a deeper level about said pathological behaviour.

@horizonous I don't think this doc exists to teach people about grooming. It exists to tell Jan's story. Go to Google if you wanna learn about grooming.
I'm going to give this a 2.5x2.5. That's a five then, as quite frankly, this is all a bit meh, despite the plot twists.

@littlegreycells haha thanks, maths never was my strong point
without sound, you would think it was american, but they all speak British. where is it supposed to be? Could'nt stand enough of it to find out! utter garbage, waste of Gillian Andersons talent....but I suppose the money was good. Would have to be, to appear in such crap!

@trevskie In my case they all speak german :-P
Somehow it's sad that the story of this show has only occasionally any resemblence to historical events. For example Czar Peter wasn't a dimwit at all, they were married for 20 years (they hated each other though) and he was only king for six months until he was toppled and died "under mysterious circumstances".
The real life of Catherine the Great was fascinating enough to make a compelling TV show. Why would you chose to turn it into an overly ridiculous fantasy story?loading replies
@onlime For laughs and fun... and they nailed it precisely.
I can't believe some people criticizing for not being historically accurate when the show itself makes it clear that it is not !
A fresh concept, dark and stoic humor going hand in hand with cynical cruelty.
The end of season was a little disappointing for me but I definitely wish there is a Season 2.loading replies
@endeka happily there will be a season 2! huzzah!
USA USA. No thanks. Removing from sickbeard. Only wish I could delete the memory of this show from my head.
Over cheesy lines
Bad accents
Terrible stock footage

VIP3Begins well, with a strong sense of mystery and some decent camerawork. Sadly, it falls apart around the midway point, and leads the viewer down too many blind alleys.

@littlegreycells yup, thanks for noticing :)
This movie sucked so bad. In real life this mom would lose custody of her children due to neclagence.
Police officer:"How did you not recognize that these crazy people werent your parents when you first dropped your kids off ma'am???"
Mom:"Aint nobody got time fo dat!!! I dropped them at the train station and made them do the trip ALONE. I didnt even call my parents to find out if they arrived safetly... I only took the word of my children talking to them through SKYPE.. I had a boat cruise with my name on it and man wait for no lonely woman! Im not gonna let my kids steal the little youth I have left to get laid and possibly getting a new hubby. I wanted to get pounded!"

VIP8I'm still annoyed at Otis's behavior throughout the season, but his voicemail to Maeve was actually really sweet and what Isaac did at the end was a total dick move. Tbh given that Netflix has been canceling their shows left and right, the producers are putting a lot of faith in them with that cliffhanger ending. Nothing has really been resolved in a satisfying way, so if we don't get a season 3 it's gonna be awfully disappointing.
Also, Maeve's mom is literally the worst ever. Fuck her. I'll miss seeing Maeve with Elsie too, they had such a cute relationship.loading replies
@kcallis Agree to disagree. If you're a hardcore drug addict like Erin, there is no "safe" or "harmless" amount of drugs you can take. Well, okay, there is, and that amount is 0. If you relapse, you relapse, end of story, regardless of the kind of drug you took. Weed in the wrong hands is just as capable of destroying lives as cocaine. And judging by the fact that she had some left, it wasn't a one time thing. She would've got high again. Otherwise she would've thrown the drugs away. Maeve did what she thought was best for her little sister. She didn't report Erin to the police for drug possession, she just wanted to protect the child that was in Erin's care. Erin telling Maeve that she'll never forgive her was pure shithead behavior. Maeve forgave her for YEARS of neglect and trauma, but Erin thinks she has some moral high ground here? What was Maeve supposed to do, ignore the whole thing and risk Erin falling back into full blown addiction which would inevitably result in her abandoning or endangering her kid? Or risk Elsie finding Erin's stash and possibly getting poisoned? Nah. Fuck Erin. She's a deeply selfish and irresponsible person. She broke her sobriety and tried to hide it. If she'd truly wanted to change, she would've confessed. But she didn't say anything to anyone, not to Maeve, not to her sponsor, not to anybody. She hid it and lied about it which is what drug users do when they fall back into the clutches of addiction. She was on her way back to Junkieville. AND on top of that she treated Maeve horribly. Her 17-year-old daughter is 10,000 times more responsible than she is. But you're obviously entitled to your opinion.
a bunch of new age teens terms been thrown around, easy and ineffective jokes, a disappointment.
loading replies
@pedro More than half way through, haven't encountered any of these 'new age teens terms' you speak of. Because guess what? Teens aren't a different species and aren't separate to the rest of us, millennials started most of them out of necessity to a changing world. Oh and guess what, millennials are old enough to be parents to teens themselves now!
