Baby Reindeer

I went into Baby Reindeer not knowing anything except it was about a guy who has a stalker. It was an emotionally challenging watch. I feel like the audience was supposed to sympathize with Martha but I couldn't. She was just too unhinged.

For people who don't like the show, I would give it to episode 4, when the reason Donny is making poor decisions becomes clear by this episode.

I wish they'd stop advertising shows like this as 'dark comedies' because I bet a lot of people aren't prepared for how dark it will actually be. Also, Baby Reindeer is not a documentary! This is a work of fiction based on real events! To what degree? We don't know. We don't actually know what really happened, that's between the author and Martha.

loading replies

@cutecruel "Martha" has been to the papers about the show, as apparently she was misrepresented as she didn't do jail time, and so the author is now facing some issues. She's going to be on the Piers Morgan show tomorrow! https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/martha-scott-baby-reindeer-piers-morgan-richard-gadd-b2541628.html

OK, what the hell have i just watched? And why did I see it through to the end? And how did Annie not die, given what happens to everyone else? At one point I was rooting for Angela to kill her!. Such a waste of a potentially good premise.

loading replies

@ryandrews that's annoying, I'm about two thirds in and I was hoping Annie would die. I think this might actually be the worst film I've ever seen.

I love it...but, we all know, "Adult Wednesday Addams," was the creative force...and, that she got royally screwed. Hide behind crooked copyright or trade name infringement laws all you want, there's room in this universe for a little comedy!

loading replies

@vwfringe firstly, thank you for showing me that, I absolutely loved it. But it does seem quite different to the Netflix series...
How long ago did Melissa Hunter do it? I've never heard of her until now, but I absolutely love her!

Boring and predictable!
Terrible chemistry, terrible acting, terrible script, terrible storyline. If anyone has watched Stargirl - Stargirl is better! If they worked hard on this they could maybe have had something, but the lazyness behind every aspect of this shines through. Pity!

loading replies

@amourgirl1 which Stargirl are you talking about, there seems to be quite a few with that name?

Justin Long using the rape dungeon as an opportunity to boost his listing square footage is the most realistic portrayal of an AirBnB host I’ve ever seen.

As one policemen says at one point: "It's gone fucking mental out there."
This movie is 150% bonkers. At times it's a bit too much, and some scenes are played a bit too seriously, but ultimately I found this movie to be massively entertaining. Don't expect a masterpiece but do expect entertaining onscreen craziness with just enough substance to stop you from turning your brain off.
It's not the most accessible movie and I can see some people being put off by the somewhat crass style, but as far as I'm concerned, I'll definitely rewatch this one and I could see it being a great drink-fueled group watch. "DJ Beatroot" joins my vocabulary right next to "McLuvin" and if they ever were to make a sequel to this one, I'm here for it.

loading replies

@obijan couldn't agree more. I've just watched it for the second time, and it's brazen weirdness had me entertained just as much as the first time around. I'd love to see a sequel, seeing how the group of girls get on!

One of the best things I’ve watched on tv in a long while, so hard hitting and real, some quite hard to watch scenes, really connected with this; didn’t want it to end.

Every male character in the show is psycho and abusive and erratic. Too much elaborate mystery and fluff, surrounding what appears to be typical abusive relationship drama. Slow story, but excellent acting and cinematography. Personally, wouldn't recommend though.

@harshk9 Moss wasn't? Though I agree the others all were.

Hunted

Four thieves break into the wrong home and end up being hunted for sport by the owners. Not as good as The Hunt (2020) and nothing new but still very enjoyable and a satisfying game of cat and mouse. It went by pretty fast I was never bored. Our main characters are easy to root for and the villains are interesting and entertaining. The kills were all well-crafted enough and unexpected. I would of liked a little less running around and a bit more confrontation.

loading replies

@acoucalancha I found myself comparing it to The Hunt as well! Definitely not as good as that, but I enjoyed it, I think a 6 is completely fair. I just wish the girl hadn't shouted as much, as I kept having to turn the volume down so I didn't disturb my neighbour lol, but apart from that it was pretty ok.

The worst season so far... it was just a mess.

Was going to give it an 8.5/10 until the last 3 or 4 episodes where it just got stupid... in fact the season as a whole was stupid. How can he possibly just up-sticks and move to England and become a professor at a prestigious university?!?

Where do people in the movies buy those glass containers that were designed solely for imprisoning people? How do they get them delivered without raising suspicions and then have them completely removed in about 30 minutes? Logistically, how do they even GET the stuff into the special bat-cave space that comes complete with electricity and air conditioning?

Anyway.. 6.5/10 for the season. Very disappointed.

@speeddemon I was wondering this as well, transporting one of those glass cages across the Atlantic can't be easy!

The Midwich Cuckoos: Season 1

I had to watch it - it was John Wyndham adaptation
It was always going to be hard with children actors (most of whom did pretty well) Although the scariest thing with the children really was the haircut that one had...
But at the end of it, despite the music, it was shallow. I didn't build any emotional attachment to the characters, it was unengaging and felt like a group of actors just going through the motions

Like so many great writers, getting Wyndham on screen seems to such a challenge :-(

loading replies

@peteo oh my god, I'm so glad you mentioned that haircut! Right from the beginning I was like "WHAT is going on with her hair?" and I kept sending screenshots to my hairdresser mum, to ask if she thought it was a wig, which she agreed she thought it was. I don't get why the girl had to have such big hair, it's a really weird plot point.

  1. Every character in this show is so unlikeable, but Dean most of all, so whenever someone would butt heads with him they came off looking better by comparison. But Theodora was pretty cool, so, points for that I guess.

  2. They really missed out on a chance to make the show marginally better by not having Ryan Bergara read The Watcher's letters.

  3. Pretty sure the moral of the story is that rich people be crazy, and bring their stupid problems on by being garbage rich people.

loading replies

@redrangerkei glad I'm not the only one that couldn't stand Dean, he was soooo unlikeable, I hated him from the beginning.

Lou

Action thriller with some nicely done action sequences and choreography. It's well shot, well acted and having it happen during a storm is a plus. Allison Janney as Lou is a badass she makes me think of Carol Peletier (The Walking Dead) the way she can play a disarmed old woman one second and turn into a total badass the next. The story spirals out of control in the second half and ending though.

loading replies

@acoucalancha yes! Especially once Carol grew her hair out. This was the first time I had seen Allison Janney with grey hair, and I like it, it suits her.

I don't understand this show. It's clearly targeted towards a young female audience but occasionally it tries to be a show for adults. I couldn't get myself through to the end of the the first episode, The main girl is a great actress though, I would bet we see her in more roles to come. Also a Fjallraven backpack on a 9yr old? In my country at least this is exclusively worn by women in their late 30s/40s that act like their in their 20s

This show was very inconsistent but these 3 last episodes were mostly good. A satisfactory ending... I think.

loading replies

@the_argentinian I agree. I don't know what all the super bad reviews are about! Yes, the graphic self harm scenes were HORRIBLE, but to be honest I quite liked the fact that it was an older woman doing it, because it seems to mostly be represented as a teenage girl thing. But aside from those graphic scenes, I thought it was pretty good. I think there must be something wrong with me that seeing people get murdered doesn't bother me at all, but a bit of self harm really does! :flushed:

The best thing about this movie is Gina Rodriguez. Man, she's so fn hot. The worst? Eva Rachel Wood's forced deep voice. Annoying.

@the_argentinian I too found her voice a bit weird, but upon googling it, it turns out that's actually her real voice?! Apparently she had to train herself to talk in a higher pitch, because she was getting nodules on her voice box.

@blackholeearth0 it's a bit confusing that there's a 30 minute film AND a series, with the same name and same actors. Was the series really filmed 2 years later, or was it filmed at the same time as the short film?
