How this has become a discussion about two very different shows, I can't possibly understand. (Seriously, TRUE BLOOD and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES? It's like comparing HOUSE, MD and GREY'S ANATOMY.)
I started watching this show when I was most definitely a part of the target audience, and despite my initial fear of this show being a TWILIGHT rip-off (despite the fact that the books had been written before, which yes, would make it a "Follow the leader"; mainly because Book!verse differs vastly from TV!verse), its flaws are entirely different.
THE VAMPIRE DIARIES has a protagonist-centered morality, that, when it comes down to it, isn't caused by Elena Gilbert's gentle or loveable personality (of which's existence, by now, only the Salvatores seem to be entirely certain), but the fact that she's got the special kind of boobs. Her magic hooha is infamous among fans of PNR and UF, the hypocrisy of the characters one of the most fandom-intern-critizised points of the entire show.
Despite that, we still watch it, and once you've come to the point where you hate a show with a passion, yet can't wait for the next episode, you do wonder why that is. (Or at least I do.) The heteronormativity, the lack of POCs, the annoying protagonist and love-triangle, the melodrama, the patheticly obvious loop-holes and inconsistencies. Even the beautiful and rather talented actors and actresses (and amazing music (and yes, to be fair, the few very well-written and often well-directed episodes) shouldn't be able to make up for it, right?
But in the end, the show is what the HOUSE OF NIGHT series is in the PNR bookworld. It might suck, it might be immature, sex-negative, and downright awful at times, but it's also compelling. I can't help but react to the insanities that ensue, and even though it probably isn't what the writers and creatores intended, my hatred for certain characters and the misery I feel everytime they mess an magnificent concept up beyond repair, are what keeps me coming back.
In other words, if you are looking for a well-written, sex-positive, 21st century TV-show whose writers you can trust, look somewhere else. If you want a guilty pleasure "Jesus, why do they all look so good, and wth, how is this his voice?"-experience, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES should definitely do. (Then again, shows like LOST GIRL, TEEN WOLF, and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER are, at this point, easier to recommend with a clean conscience.)
(That isn't to say the show isn't enjoyable. Especially if you are less involved, are able to be entertained by shows despite their influence on particular people, or don't question the characters' and writers' decisions, it should be a show you might come to like.)
SPOILERS ahead for non-book readers:
- I know Penelope wants to protect Colin but she will never resort to shaming anyone. So Marina’s pregnancy reveal kind of disappoints me. I feel the whole idea behind Lady Whistledown is taking a different turn. Penelope should have gone to Eloise or Lady Bridgerton with the truth, I just think this will have major repercussions once we get to the reveal in the future
- Now to the problematic scene. It is not as awful as it was in the book, however, that is not say it was not wrong. Simon was not drunk here and even his reaction and the stuttering was a bit tamer, I thought there would be more emphasis on it. At this point, Daphne doesn’t even know about his stutter! Also, being in Daphne’s mind in the book, knowing her thoughts, and the fact that this happens after she learns all the truth about his father and his stutter makes it even worse. God, I hated this scene in the book, and what made me resent it even more was how the aftermath was handled. Daphne didn't really regret what happened, she thought it was good that she took advantage of the situation as this might be her only chance to get pregnant. For me, Daphne's character never redeemed herself and Simon forgave her (without her even apologizing) and went along with it too easily. So I want to see how the aftermath will be handled in the show because even if this scene wasn’t as messy, it was still very uncomfortable.
Zach is such a learning-disabled kid. Up to that point an actually rather decent episode.
But goddamn Zach again, ruining the episode. Not that I care too much about Nora, though.
But really, the character Zach is not redeemable for me from this point on, even if I ignore my pretty strong dissatisfaction with the actor.
Nice to see how the hunter wasn't holding up his part of the bargain. He agreed that Setrakian reads the book first and then gives it to Quinlan. But he (Quinlan) suspected from the beginning Setrakian wouldn't give the book up and somehow we must get some suspense into this episode between those two asap, right? Meh. Again this writing with too little care (but I'd admit the writing overall was much better, comparatively).
But they were smarter this time not to pan over too much text in the book and this time it had umlauts in it.
Ah, consistency and an eye for detail, weak spots for The Strain, destroying any kind of immersion.
I probably won't be back for S3. It went too much downhill this season.
The only thing that would make me consider getting back to it is knowing it gets more action, now that Eph can go on a hunting spree.
Oh, and I wonder who they will get as a recast next for Zach. ;)
I... don't know where to start. Maybe like this: I want more. I know that if this season was 13 episodes instead of 8, the story would get unnecessarily dragged out and the Defenders probably wouldn't meet until episode 6. But maybe 10 eps? I just feel like it ended too quickly.
I knew, of course, that there was no way Matt was really dead. Daredevil is renewed for season 3. So his "death" shouldn't have had any emotional weight to it, right? Well, it did. I genuinely had tears in my eyes, which I guess is a sign that the showrunners did something right. Now I've only got one question: is Elektra alive? The whole season (which isn't saying much, 'cause I watched it in like 10 hours) I've been going back and forth between "she's getting a redemption arc" and "she's gonna die for sure". And honestly, the latter seemed way more plausible. She kind of got a redemption arc in Daredevil season 2, so another one didn't seem likely. And yet, I hoped. With all my might. Because Elektra may be problematic, but she's still an incredible, layered, multi-dimensional character. I wanted her to live so badly. I wanted her and Matt to get their happy ending. That would've been nice - a tragic OTP that you think are doomed defying the odds and driving off into the sunset. And now I'm furious because WE DON'T KNOW! WE DON'T KNOW IF SHE'S ALIVE OR NOT! We'll have to wait until like goddamn 2019 or late 2018 at best to find out! Who the fuck thought this would be a good idea? You know how many things could happen until 2019? I could die! I could die and never find out if Elektra made it! No, I'm not going to calm down! This shit is why I have anxiety!
I loved the scene where Jessica pulled the freaking elevator up. For some reason she didn't get to showcase her powers as much as the others, so it was a satisfying, triumphant moment for her and for me.

Luke and Claire are together and happy! Yay! They're so cute. I hope they have some peace for a while.

I'm sad for Gao. I don't give a shit about the other four fingers (how stupid does that sound?), but she's been around since Daredevil season 1. Hats off to the OG badass. And double props for throwing Danny around a bit. If only she'd used slightly more force...
I honestly don't buy the whole "you wouldn't believe me if I told you" thing that they kept saying to Misty. They live in a world where Avengers are real, aliens invade the Earth on a regular basis and vigilantes pop up left and right. If I were a cop in the Marvel universe, I wouldn't blink at the notion of an ancient cult pursuing immortality. Still not as weird as Wanda Maximoff's powers or a dude turning green when he gets angry.
Final thoughts: fun show, pretty much exactly what I expected it to be, well-written, well-shot, some great cinematography, some awesome music, some really good fight choreography, decent villains (although they kind of wasted Sigourney Weaver, I feel like they could've done much more with Alexandra). Definitely hoping for more.
[7.7/10] Given the dearth of LGBTQ characters in major mainstream works, I feel like there’s a tendency for fans to ship any two people of the same sex who shows the slightest bit of friendship or affection for one another. That makes me hesitant to suggest what I’m about to suggest for fear of falling into that trap, but here goes anyway -- Danny has better chemistry with Davos than he’s ever had with Colleen.
In fact, I think there’s a fair read of the final scene of this episode, where Davos sees Danny embracing Colleen in the rain like in so many romcoms, as Davos walking away upset that his crush is with someone else. But whether you consider it a bug or a feature (and I consider it the latter), what’s interesting is that the episode works equally well with and without that subtext.
If you choose to read it without that element, Davos still has one of the better motivated (and better-acted) presences in this show in just a couple of quick episodes. He is pulled in two directions, because he is clearly fiercely loyal to Danny (his “I won’t leave you” while Danny’s getting stitched up by Claire evidences that), but he’s also jealous and resentful of him. That makes his reactions to Danny and to the new life he’s scratched out for himself in New York layered in a way that really only Ward Meachum’s have been on the show so far.
On the one hand, Davos admits that he feels a little usurped by Danny, that he believed becoming the iron fist was his birthright and the fact that the monks chose Danny instead of him still eats at him. And, to add insult to injury, Danny abandoned his post, and set his duties aside. Danny has the thing Davos wanted most in the world, a thing that was denied him, and seems to be walking away from it, shirking his responsibilities. It’s the sort of thing that would bother anyone, and Sacha Dhawan conveys the restrained frustrations of his character well.
But on the other hand, Davos feels betrayed at a more personal level. When he tells Claire that he treated Danny like a brother and that he nevertheless just left without saying a word, you can see it emanating from a more personal sort of hurt, the type that believed they had a friendship that could not be disregarded so easily. That friendship is given texture by all of Danny’s previous fond recollections of the hijinx the pair would go together, and that adds depth to the conflict between the two friends when Davos questions Danny leaving Kunlun and asks what appeal this world holds for him.
And yet, it can also be taken a step further, that Davos is not simply hurt as a friend and brother in arms, but as someone who has romantic feelings for Danny that may not have been reciprocated or ever even acknowledged. I’ll admit this may be a stretch on my part, and perhaps I’m taking the completely dead romance the show has tried to sell between Danny and Colleen, in this episode especially, seeing Finn Jones have a modicum of chemistry with someone on this otherwise anodyne show, and concluding that by comparison, his concordance with Davos must be love. But either way, there’s clear affection, whether filial or something more, between the two of them, that creates interesting and conflicting motivations for the pair.
I’m as shocked to say it as anyone, but this also gives a really interesting answer to the question of why Danny left Kunlun. For a while, the assumed answer was a pragmatic one -- to find out what happened to his parents, but we also get an emotional one here. Danny, understandably, felt “empty” after what happened to him and his parents, and he thought that becoming the iron fist, reaching the pinnacle of the cultural collective he was brought into, would fill that in his life.
Only he finds that when he achieves what he set out to do that it isn’t as fulfilling as he’d hoped. He sits around at the gates of Kunlun stacking rocks and seeming like his duty is a tedious and hollow one. Seeing the bird flying free as a sign is kind of cheesy, but it still speaks to a relatable notion of having done what you set out to do, and yet it not fixing the deeper-seeded problems within. It adds a human dimension to Danny’s struggle that’s been lost in the usual orphan backstory and generic kung fu material.
We also get more hints that the Monks of Kunlun are not exactly sterling examples. It’s appropriate that Danny is expected to go into a cave to face trials to reach the next level of his training, because there’s a real Jedi vibe to all of his. Danny and Davos have been trained to suppress their anger and other strong emotions – such sentiment is not appropriate for a weapon – and yet it’s still there, haunting Danny and blocking his chi.
There is a sense, brought forward in an occasionally dull but generally good conversation with Claire, that Danny never really processed what happened with him and his parents, and those difficult emotions are still affecting him, even if he doesn’t acknowledge it. There are connections he has to this world that he just can’t shake using his Kunlun discipline.
Unfortunately, one of those connections is Colleen. The whole tortured “how could you lie to me?” angst between them is pretty awful, especially because we know they’ll inevitably overcome it and team up to help one another. Without good performances or writing in the overwrought scenes between the two of them, it just feels like a perfunctory bit of squabbling without any emotional punch.
And to add insult to injury, we get more Bakuto here, who plays the angry cult leader with all the charisma of worn hockey puck. There’s a common theme to this episode, with both Danny and Colleen realizing that the organizations that trained them may be less than noble, but since we just got introduced to this sect of The Hand and Colleen’s connection to it, her half of the proceedings have no weight.
The only bit of real intrigue is that we learn Bakuto’s sect is doing the same blood draining stuff that The Hand was doing in Daredevil Season 2. Otherwise, it’s more nonsensical, shoehorned in antagonist stuff that detracts from the better-than-usual things “Lead” pulls off here (including giving Claire more to do and showing off her sarcastic edge).
Much of that comes down to Danny and Davos, and whether you’d like to think of them as symbolizing an unrealized crush or simply brothers in arms, their connection has a force that’s been missing on the Danny side of this show (the Meachum side continues apace with some good if brief and kind of creepy, Joy-Harold material), and instantly adds a new dimension to Danny’s return to New York City.
What a phenomenal show! Being a Marvel production, I fully expected something of quality, but my expectations were blown entirely out of the water. Daredevil has easily taken its place among my favorite shows currently on air and far surpasses the current lineup of comic book-based television properties (including Marvel's own Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
The cast is great. Charlie Cox brings emotional weight to Matt Murdock and an intimidating presence to his vigilante alter ego. Supporting players Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Rosario Dawson, all make their respective roles feel critical, never distracting or annoying. But it's Vincent D'Onofrio that really steals the spotlight as Wilson Fisk, bringing to life a villain who is not only vicious and truly terrifying, but also heartbreakingly pitiful.
Daredevil's writing separates it from the current crop of superhero television. The progression of the plot is well organized and dialog rarely (if ever) crosses that line into comic book corniness. You really get the sense that the show runners had a clear vision for where they wanted this freshman season to go, while still laying groundwork for future seasons. Never does it feel like you're just being strung along for bigger and better things to come next season. And the show doesn't constantly try to remind you of the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, as any references to it are (usually) subtle.
But perhaps Daredevil's greatest strength is its cinematography. Fight sequences are expertly choreographed and coherent (not to mention brutally gritty), even rivaling those of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The production value is top notch, probably thanks to the refreshingly limited reliance on CGI. But what impressed me the most was the brave willingness to let the camera linger or even meander occasionally. Ending episode 2 with a minutes-long single take fight sequence had me speechless, and is a testament to the level of quality brought to the show.
Daredevil is a strong addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I think Marvel's partnership with Netflix could prove to be one of their best decisions regarding their television properties and I look forward to future shows like A.K.A. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.

First let's talk about Steve, he's amazing, he's brave and kind.. Did you see how he was genuinely care about these kids and puts himself in danger just to protect them.. I gotta say he became one of my favorite characters in the show
Also lets talk about the kid who plays Will, gosh!! That kid is sooo talented, I was genuinely feeling his pain, he's so amazing and I'm sure he has a bright future ahead of him
The 3 ways attack bit was also amazing, seeing all the characters attack at the same time from different places was gold writing from the show runners.. I liked how the kids took Steve with them while he was unconscious LMAO, and he was like f*** it lets go burn that sh*t.. I still thing that Nancy doesn't deserve Steve, he's too good for her
Anyway, I didn't like that bit with Dustin and his pet, it felt stupid, I mean they're monsters after all so I don't see how that monster can form such feelings for human, anyway he died at the end we saw him next to the chocolate bar
About El, her scene closing that gate was simply EPIC, I loved how she towards the end used both her hands to push the monster back, and by doing that she actually became more powerful, so now we know El with 2 raised hands are unstoppable
Last thing is the Snow Ball party, it was sad and hilarious seeing Dustin get rejected one by one LMAO, but then Nancy saved his a**, then we saw Mike sitting alone and I had a feeling that El gonna show up, and she did!! She was beautiful and cute.. I'm glad that she's finally with Mike and she feels happy

The problem with big tentpole pictures like this one is expectation. People already build up a picture of the film in their heads thanks to the trailers and all the hype surrounding the film. I, myself, was hyped up for this film following the exciting trailer.
The critics have not been happy and many people have dusted down their computers to criticise the film. Again, the problem I am sure was expectation. This film is good, sometimes excellent. Oscar Isaac is fearsome as Apocalypse, though I felt the character could have been more apocalyptic. The action is great and once again Quicksilver steals the show, in terms of story and lightness of tone.
I was disappointed so see one character die - why do they always have to die? - will there be a Days of Future Past 2 to bring him/her back? - no, but can't we just have a little but of fun instead of creating dramatic tension by killing somebody?
The film is flabby at times, a little off with the pacing during the first hour, and needs a serious injection of adrenalin at times. However, the film does kick up a gear and there are many crowd pleasing moments before the films end. There are a lot of characters in the film but that isn't a bad thing. Most are used well, others are merely cameos - hello, the Blob!
So what if this isn't even the best X-Men movie, although arguably it comes a close second or third. Its not the end of the world if it isn't the best superhero movie this year. Civil War comes out on top and Batman V Superman wasn't as awful as people made out. The film is very good and on reflection will be seen as one of the best movies of the summer, I am sure. I hold no hope for the Turtles film, am not sure on the new Ghostbusters, and Warcraft and Assassins Creed are an unknown property to film (though they both look ace - I'm just trying not to get carried away with hype).
Enjoy the film for the spectacle it is and remember a time not too long ago when superhero films were looked down upon by Hollywood execs.
I was recommended by a colleague to watch this show. To put it bluntly I was sceptical - it seemed just like a kids cartoon, and I am in my mid 30s - but I decided to give it a go, mainly because he kept saying "trust me"!
Over the past month I have watched the entire series and must say I was quite impressed. While it definitely is aimed at a younger audience, like all good children's stories it appeals to parents and children alike. If anything, it appeals to adults because it reminds them of what they loved about children's stories as kids.
The first season took a few episodes to get going. It took me a while to get into it and embrace the characters. The early episodes tend to be generally self-contained stories, however towards the end of season 1 the story takes off, and the story become much more serialised. From then on out it is a really enjoyable ride all the way through to the series 3 finale. If anything it gets better from season to season.
The animation is first rate for TV. I have never really watched any anime (or anime-style, in this case) series before so I was definitely going into this green, but I found the quality to be first rate. The characters were also very well written, and the constructed world of element benders was believable within its mythos. I highly recommend this to kids and adults alike. Better still, watch it with your kids.
At the end of the day, they are just telling good stories, and who wouldn't enjoy that?
I have heard from more than a few people liking season 2 over 3, and I can see 3 being a bit bumpier (I really like the resolution to Boiling Rock two-parter, but didn't feel too much for the whole thing overall). Still, Zuko's arc alone helps propel the series to higher complexity, and 3 is just ambitious and constantly inventive throughout that I can't help but feel it's a step above.
The first half alone is so jam-packed: from the show's own version of Buffy's The Zeppo in "Sokka's Master", self-knowing (superpower-)teen angst of "The Beach", "The Avatar and the Firelord"'s past-present parallel of epic sweep, to the horror film-tinged atmosphere of "The Puppet's Master". Show's best standalone episode ever happens just before the finale though; "The Ember Island Players" is one great meta-fiction palate cleanser, so hilarious.
Speaking of finale, I have been trying and failing since I completed it to think of a show that saves its very best for its very last, like Avatar did with "Sozin's Comet". Such a spectacular, rousing, pour-all-in finish. Its Part 3 "Into the Inferno", especially, instantly becomes one of my all-time favorite episodes ever. I still get thrills and chills from many music cues and visuals from this finale (Ozai first noticing Aang and zooming towards him; the melancholic orchestra that accompanies that deeply tragic sibling duel). If not for the fact that this has a sequel series, I might be tempted to rewatch the whole thing right now again.

Anyway speaking about the season finale, this episode was great on so many levels, it answered a lot of questions yet it left an opportunity for more things to come in future seasons
I really liked the character's development in this season, the girls were so complex in a very positive way, and honestly when I heard that (Park Hye-soo) will be replaced by another actress I was really upset cuz I liked her in that character she was so shy and cute, but then when I started watching season 2 with (Ji-Woo) playing the role of (Yoo Eun-Jae) I was really amazed and shocked of how good she was!! I totally forgot that the actress was replaced by another one, she was so cute, so shy, so talented and she really stayed true to the actual character from season 1, I didn't feel the change
Also I loved the new character that was introduced (Jo Eun) she's really cute and changed the mood of the show
Also the new Boys were great addition to this season especially (Seo Jang-Hoon)
This show is special in so many ways and I hope we get to see more of it
Welp, like Tryion said, We're fucked. Living vs. The Dead. Season 8 A fight that only comes once.
The dragon pit scene was awesome. Getting so many characters all in one place at the same time was great to see. So many quick “oh, hey you’re still alive” moments. One of the best was Brienne and the Hound. Speaking of the Hound, we did not get the Cleganebowl we have been wanting for so long but at least he was able to tell his brother off. Maybe next season…
Cersei, as the hound would say, is a real cunt. She truly is the biggest villain this show has seen. She is lying to everyone about sending her armies north and bringing in more mercenaries to help fight while Dany is a little occupied. She not only threatened to kill not one of her brothers but both of them is the same episode. Jamie is finally getting smart and getting away from her, even if he is leaving to go fight an army of undead. I honestly think she might stick around to the end and keep the iron throne. She has no problem doing whatever it takes. She has a kid on the way and that is all she is worried about now (I still don’t think she will have the child because of the prophecy said she would only have three). Oh and the shot of snow falling on King's Landing was a beautiful reminder that winter is here.
The winterfell storyline finally did something amazing. Sansa’s “trial” of Littlefinger was a long time coming and with Bran there was no denying. I’m so glad Arya got to kill him with his own dagger. The sisters finally started acting like family.
Nice to see Theon having another chance at redemption. He had a nice moment with Jon about their dad, well technically Ned was neither of their father. I hope he gets to save Yara next season. I wonder where she is if Euron is going to Essos or could she already be dead?
The show finally says what all the fans have know for years, Jon is a true Targaryen and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. And they say it just as the two have sex for the first time, nothing new for this show. I’m sure this won’t be a problem. Dany will be cool with it, right? I mean the old Targaryens were into incest too. Maybe not we'll just have to wait and find out.
That last scene really was a little frightening, to see something that has been keeping the white walkers out for 8000 years to just go down like that. Now that the Night King has a dragon they are really going to cause some havoc. RIP Tormund and Beric? I don't think there were able to get off the wall in time but were they on the part still standing?
Great season, moved a little too fast and missed some of the slower character moments from old season. They definitely had some of the largest battle scenes TV has ever seen and I’m sure we are not done yet. Let the wait for season 8 begin…
Very good series with good actors. Definately worth the shot
While the trailers and adverts might make this seem like it's a happy romp, it's not. Believe me it's not. This, in my opinion, is a very sad film. It took me by surprised me and made me remember aspects of my childhood I don't normally keep at the forefront of my mind. This is despite the comedy and the happy joy-joy attitude seen for about 50% of the film. I really related to Riley, so much so that I actually cried quite a bit at the theatre. I felt a bit embarrassed but I really couldn't help it. It wasn't the acts in the film that made me sad, it was the explanation afterwards. Riley's motivations. Hearing it in words after seeing everything broke me. A Disney film hasn't made me cry like that ever.
You absolutely have to see Inside Out. But, don't go into it looking for it to put a smile on your face after a bad day. It's a really emotional ride. However, the message in the end is really worth it. It's a message that we should really get across to the children of today. I wish the message being put forward by this movie was being aimed at children back when I was a kid. It would have really helped. It would have indeed.
what the hell just happened?!? absolutely amazing. I didn't need a seat, the edge was just enough. The minute Kat said "We're pregnant" I was like, yeah, no, pause, hold on a second, What? I didn't believe it at any point. I mean, what are the odds? You have to rape Spencer, take his sperm, and then what? You have to smuggle it into the prison and get pregnant? For God's sake, that impossible. Even though she could've done it, she couldn't be sure she'll get pregnant on the first try. Just the though of raping Spencer has me on internal combustion.
Overall, the episode was intense. I certainly ly didn't know what the hell was gonna happen next. I always suspected if the prison guard but I didn't picture it all out. And that reunion with his mom. My feels! It was so lovely I couldn't even handle it.
Prentiss alone! I swear she's come back to the team when it was on fire. Her job is not easy but she seems to be carrying the weight of the world. Is she gonna face consequences for that AMBER alert? I guess she should but I don't want her to. We all go extremes to save the ones we care about and she had no other choice. I'm team Prentiss.
Having Morgan back was amazing too. When he appeared in Prentiss' office and he said "We need to talk" and the screen suddenly turned black I swear that was were the episode ended and I was infuriated. But fortunately, itwasnt and we got to see the reunion with the rest of the members of the team. His scene with García was lovely but I wanted to see his reunion with Spencer.
One thing I didn't get was that text. It's so obvious it wasn't a trap for Morgan, but for the rest of the team and all of them fall into it. That cliffhanger is cruel but it was worthy after this amazing and intense episode. I can't express how much I loved this season from beginning to end. The development and insight they gave us about Spencer was perfect and enjoyable at the same time. I can't wait to see what happens with Scratch.
Well, again, one great scene goes a long way. The scene where Frank and Karen converse in that diner is one of the best in the show. The way that Deborah Ann Woll conveys that she's at her wits end is superb, and Frank's monologue about how feeling hurt means there's a connection to something, and he'd kill to have that connection back is a little trite, but wonderfully performed. It's a powerful, human moment at the center of all this chaos, and the performances make sure it work. The ensuing scene where Frank beats up the mooks in the diner to get the info he wants about the Blacksmith is pretty horrifying, but then again it's supposed to be, and I appreciate the show not pulling punches about how brutal Punisher is, even if it's a bit grusome to watch in practice.
I was less enamored with the whole bit with Clare Temple and Matt. It's always nice to see someone like Clare cut through Matt's martyr complex B.S., but the hospital staff covering up what happened was really vague. I get that they're presumably leaving plot threads that this show or The Defenders can pick up in later seasons, but it didn't feel well developed, and Clare quitting over it seemed like piece-moving rather than something that stemmed purely from her character.
Madame Gao was a treat, and again, I think I find Daredevil's scenes the most entertaining when someone clearly smarter than him is calling him out for not really looking at the big picture. The actress who plays Gao has a great presence about her, and that helps keep the tension up during the expository dialogue. Plus, I even enjoyed the creativity of Daredevil darting among the clothes in the dry cleaner in order to hide. It's a little silly, but it makes sense for what he's trying to do, and helped distinguish this fight from the dozens of others he's had with faceless mooks.
Speaking of which, the final scene on the boat was so-so. Thematically, I like the idea that Daredevil is offering to help Frank, and even to violate his no-killing code in order to do it, at the same time Frank is upset that Daredevil won't even allow him the false moment of peace from killing one of those henchmen. The dialogue itself is clunky, but I like the contrast, that Daredevil doesn't believe in wanton destruction, but maybe in the fact of what Karen's told him and he's learned himself about Castle's background and The Blacksmith, he's willing to make an exception given all that this guy has taken away from Castle and others. Matt crosses himself before saying this, which is another nod to the religious themes that have been floating in the background this season.
The show's pretty much reached the point to where it's mostly just enjoyable pulp with a few scenes that rise above that, but I can appreciate it as slightly heady entertainment, even if it feels like the show is aiming to be more than that at times.
