Sabrina, the Teenage Witch

Hard to be objective, as this show is pure nostalgia for me. Saw it first time in my teens, in the 90s, probably with a German dubbing. Still, compared to how bad the movie was (this is based on), or the remake (I could not force myself to watch more than a few episodes), this was just great.

Many memorable and quite original episodes. Especialy in earlier episodes, characters like Libby and Willard Kreaft completely stole the show, and I guess more people watched for Salem, than Sabrina. The very strong supporting cast, really made it great. Not that much in later seasons though, where they get rid of them, and the writing went right into the trash.

Still, worth a watch and better than most of the stuff that's released now. After multiple repeats, I'm always just surprised how bad of a person Sabrina is. The show tries to portray her as a saint, but that is just not what she is. Totally selfish, manipulative, vindictive psychopath, would be a more fitting description.

The Office

I always wondered why I never finished this show. I tried multiple times, and each time I quit after a few seasons. And in the end, I found out why. I hate every single character in this show. They all suck and are just horrible people. I just can't force myself to care about them An the show trying to make Jim and Pam look like the "good" ones, pisses me even more. They are the fakiest, most horrible ones of all of them. Probably the only decent one is Toby, but of course, he is sh*t on the whole time.

Dark Matter

It has been a while since I read the book, but the start looks promising. Bit slow, but not the worst. Let's see how it continues.

The Decagon House Murders

A very faithful adaptation of what already was a great book. Too bad I read the book, and in the middle of the first episode I remembered the whole solution. Still, I really enjoyed seeing how they tried to obscure it, keeping the surprise.. If you like An then there were none by Agatha Christie, you will love this, as it is heavily inspired by that book.

3 Body Problem

Always when I watch a show like this, I do hope that real scientists are smarter. But the older I get, I no longer belive that.

Overall, the underlying story is interesting, the show just is about everything, except that. There are a few good moments, but a lot of pointless ones. The moment where one adult had to explain to another adult that 43 + 8 is 51 killed all hope for this show for me

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities

After rewatching Twilight zone, Outer limits, Tales from the Darkside and Tales from the Crypt for at least 5th time, I was looking for something new. And I stumbled on this show. Maybe be because I wend to it after watching so many great shows, but this was just bad. The acting and effects were good. The cinematography mostly also, just often too dark. But the stories were just boring, dragged out, uninspired, forgetable. I only like the 3rd episode, that showed a bit of originality. Skip this show, go watch better ones.

Fake Marriage

A fun show, that is caried mostly by the main character. Too bad the writing gets progressively worse as the episodes go. If they stopped after the 8th episode, it would be better.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Pretty visuals, but mediocre writing. Feels really slow and bloated, with mostly nothing going on. There were moments when I thought this was written by AI. I hope the story picks up, but that will not help the horrible characters. As in most shows, the characters that should be the smartest behave like total idiots, and that repeatedly. Suspension of disbelief is not enough to take this seriously when there is no effort shown.

Tales from the Crypt

Rewatching this great show, I forgot how good it was. So many great actors, memorable stories, and perfect practical effects.

After 4 episodes it's quite good. There is an interesting mystery, and one is intrigued about where it's going. Still, it has some of the typical problems other streaming shows have, not wanting to move the story at a reasonable pace, so they have something for the next season. But actually, the worst thing in the whole show are the hairstyles of a lot of the background cast. They completely break the immersion, as they don't fit the setting at all. Like they had them run in from a different set, and just changed the clothes.

This was painful. At least it was quite short. Around 30% is quite interesting archive footage, with the rest some guy just making things up. Toward the end I really expected they will start blaming aliens.

Defying Gravity

Too bad that this was canceled so soon. Quite an interesting premise and would like to see where it goes. Also too bad that they did not focus more on the sci-fi stuff, as some episodes are more of a soap opera. It's a bit hard to root for people who sabotage their lives every chance they get.

Love, Death & Robots

Some really good ones, and some quite mediocre episodes. Worth a watch.

The Swarm

The idea on its own is very interesting, and I will definitely pick up the book. But the execution here is off. The show is mostly filler. If you watch the last 5 minutes of every episode, you will see almost all the interesting stuff.

It keeps adding and removing characters and then trying to make you care about characters it just introduced 5 minutes ago. It's only 8 episodes, but for half of the people in the last episode, I had no idea who they are or why they are there.

It should have focused more on the main 4, or even better, choose 2 and focus on them. If this was made as a 2-hour movie and had 2 main characters for the whole runtime, this would be much better.

The characters are also not the best. The story tries to have some character development (two have quite a big tragedy, but forget about it completely within 5 minutes) but it falls very flat. They also should be "scientists" but they jump to conclusions so quickly without any reasoning, that they sound stupid half of the time. Maybe it is better in the book.

Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan

This one really reminds me of the older versions of "The Twilight zone" (the good ones). Especially the second episode, which I think is the best one here, was really like something from there. The mysteries are interesting, and not that predictable. Characters are fun and work well together. Few consistency errors, here and there (one character stops everything because of his obsession, even eating, but is always cleanly shaved) , and some story threads ended up rather quickly with a very simple resolution (the amnesiac boyfriend) , but nothing major that will diminish the enjoyment here.

Invert: Jozuka Hisui Inverted Collection

Entertaining mystery show. I quite liked this "inverted" style of mysteries more. Just think of Columbo, as it's exactly that style, where you know who did it from the start. Still, there are quite a few surprises in the end. Compared to the first part "Medium" the episodes are better, with an overall better flow, but the surprise in the last episode is not as impactful.

I do hope there will be more, and they focus more also on the history of the main characters. Should be interesting.

IQ246

Quite a decent Sherlock Holmes series (Yes Sharaku Houmonji is a version of Sherlock Holmes). They are some nice mysteries, even if the story gets a bit predictable toward the end. Also, the character of "Watson" is a bit underused, but this gets better as the show progresses. Overall another good Japanese mystery show, even though not that original.

The Thorns of Alice

Good actors, a good mystery, well paced. It hooks you quite in. Too bad it gets pretty predictable toward the end, and some characters are not fleshed out that well. Still, there were a few surprises, and it got darker than I thought it would be.

Medium Detective Hisui Jozuka

Quite entertaining mystery shows, the quirky detective was replaced with a quirky medium and a bit babbling writer. They work quite well together, and the mysteries are good enough. Where it all goes crazy is the last episode, and it just makes the show perfect . I just wished there were a few more episodes before the end here.

Btw. This story continues in the show Invert: Jozuka Hisui Toujoshu . Do not look it up before finishing this one. Any info on it will spoil the ending here.

Radiation House

Entertaining medical drama, with many quirky, but memorable characters. It feels sometimes like a PSA, where they try to inform the viewer of some medical risks, but it's not that bad.

I just did not like the second scene of the first episode. 200-400 ISO for a star shot is just too low :)

Výnimočná Nikol

I do like crime shows with quirky main characters. And it works quite well here and I like the show quite a lot (ignoring some questionable acting here and there). Too bad that this is a complete carbon copy of the french TV show HPI. They changed nothing, which is quite a disappointment. "Inspired by" means something else :/

The Memorandum of Kyoko Okitegami

I so wish for a second season here. Such a fun show and Yui Aragaki in the role of Kyoko is just perfect. It's one of those clever detective shows that are quite common in Japanese dramas. But I love those. No running, no shooting, just logic, and intellect.

This show together with Time Taxi convinced me to give a try to Japanese dramas, and I never regretted it :)

Miss Sherlock

The story and characters here are loosely based on Sherlock Holmes, and this is not the first show that's did this. But with good actors and mysteries, this is a great show. Just the ending of the overall story was a bit of a letdown. Happens actually a lot in Japanese dramas. Like they ran out of episodes and had to end it quickly.

Susedia

Quite the funny show, even though they like to use mistaken identities as the source of humor a little too often. Also, one could use the characters' as an example for different neurosis and psychological problems. Especiall the character of Ildico becomes a complete psychopath as the season's progress.

The Perfect Insider

Quite the enjoyable mystery series. One for those that enjoy locked room mysteries, like in many other Japanese shows. The only thing I found really off was the actress playing Dr. Magata. She did not fit the role, and the actress being even younger than Emi Takei (who plays a student here) made some of the scenes strange.

Kateikyoushi no Torako

After two episodes, I have no idea where they are going with this show. Still, the main character of Torako is quite entertaining, and it peaked my curiosity enough with the hints of the overall story, that I will continue watching it.

Murder, She Wrote

A fun mystery show, even though it got worse as the seasons progressed. Still, I saw every episode multiple times, and will probably watch them again. The best episodes are consistently the ones that take place in Cabot Cove, and it will always be funny how everybody is shocked when another murder happens there. With that murder rate, it has to be the murder capital of the world.

I actually always expected an episode where they would show that Jessica is a secret killer mastermind behind all these murders. even as a what-if episode. There can't be any other explanation for how a writer is associated with so many killings. But we never got one.

Invisible

I'm unsure about this one. The stories look fine, but the acting feels very stiff and fake. When Japanese dramas try action, it rarely works out. Usually, they are better when they try to be clever. I just hope it gets better. Especially the character of "Invisible". I like the actress, especially from Galileo, but here she just sits and eats. Can one even call that acting?

Also, I hope the Japanese police are better than what's shown here. They react like snails here and behave like idiots all the time.

The Files of Young Kindaichi

The mysteries are well thought out, but the acting is a bit on the weaker side, and the always recording guy is a bit too convenient. Still another entertaining detective show.

Don't Call It Mystery

If you like Japanese mystery shows or shows like Columbo or Poirot, this is an easy recommendation. If you need action, chasing, shooting, and similar, just skip this one. This is mostly just people standing around and talking.

The mysteries here are clever and captivating. It will just hook you in, and you will need to see the resolution. The main character is quirky but fun, in a line with many detectives. The supporting cast is good even though some are a bit cartoony. But that's probably as this is based on a manga. Nothing too bad. I like how everything is interconnected in the end, and you can see that there is a thought behind it, it does not feel random. Everything is explained, except the little tease for the next season

In the end, I did not like only one thing. The Samsung fold product placement. The phones looked too much out of place. Did not really fit the personalities of the characters in the show.
