I came for Vampires, stayed for the homoeroticism between Tom Cruise and Brat Pitt and was completely surprised by Kirsten Dunst's performance.
I mean, she's 11 in the film and doesn't have to hide behind the other leads at all.
All in all, I would say you should have seen it, because otherwise you might not quite believe it.
But after watching I still can't believe that a film that basically tells the story of a homosexual couple raising their lesbian adopted daughter was released in 1994 and we still have a difficult legal situation for such a situation in some parts of the world today.
gerard butler in a 5'o-clock shadow on the cover? what the hell are you expecting?!
a totally solid sunday-afternoon dad-flick.
grab a beer, park your ass on the couch, switch your brain off and catch a few ZZZ's.
(not saying this like it's a bad thing!)
Pulpy, corny, cheesy. File this movie under the dictionary definition of a B-tier action movie.
Outside of the somewhat contemporary, PMC-laden main plot, this is the most by the numbers action movie I've seen for a long, long time. But that's not to say it's bad. It's perfect Sunday afternoon fodder to turn your brain off to, even if it's as predictable as they come and follows all the same beats you've seen before. All the tropes are here, including a big finale shoot-out and buckets of blood to match. Tune in, tune out and enjoy the simplicity of this dumb, loud movie.
What's a boy to do growing up in a crappy town, with parents on the cusp of calling it a wrap, with a stoner brother who's pretty much checked out of life, and you the get transferred to the public school where you don't know anyone and are NOT one of the cool kids? Of course..., you spy your future muse from afar, and invite her to be in a video with your band..., but, uh, you don't have a band yet. No worries cuz:
"This is your life,
You can go anywhere....
You gotta grab the wheel and own it,
And drive it like you stole it.
Roll it!"
Newcomer Ferdia Walsh-Peelo is the boy. Perpetual muse Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody) is the girl, and Jack Reynor (Kin) once again plays a troubled brother, while 1980's Dublin Ireland is where they all want to escape from. A coming of age and finding yourself drama that never veers into schmaltz, with a throwback 80's soundtrack that defies you not to bob your head and dance. This is the movie "La La Land" WISHED it could be, and, while it was criminally snubbed come awards time, word of mouth will keep this one being popped into DVD players, and streamed long after it's over hyped rival is just a faded memory. Remember:
"This is your life
You can be anything....
You gotta learn to rock and roll it,
You gotta put the pedal down...
And drive it like you stole it!"
80s music, geek love .. what more can one ask for on a Sunday afternoon.
"You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity."
Wow, I remember loving this movie the few times I had seen it over a decade ago, but I am bumping up the score on this one. Might be the film that has the most "best" characters. Everyone I talk to that watches this loves a different character, and I love most of them.
Hilarious and thoroughly enjoyable.
Still holds up after 20 years - and surprisingly it's Statham's acting that is perhaps the worst in the film.
Great to see Mike Reid in this. Wonderful character and a fine actor.
And the character of Bricktop is one for the ages. Brilliantly written. (Go watch his guest appearance on 'Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge' as the boxing promoter cough*cough*nobody mention Frank Warren*cough*cough)
It's a riot from start to finish. Ritchie's best.
8/10
A dark and deep one for Leo, I didn’t expect the way it went. Drugs are very powerful.
I would've loved Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald from the beginning, he is perfect! His interpretation allowed me to see more than just a simple villain, I find his Grindelwald more mature and interesting.
Mikkelsen makes a better Grindelwald than Depp he brings more layers and maturity to the character. As usual the Fantastic Beasts were good especially the scorpion crabs. I was a little bored with the story though it was lacking I was struggling to care. Some relationships feel barely touched upon.
This film couldn't try to be a Coen Brothers film any harder... and it utterly fails at living up to what it wanted to be. The whole thing felt like there were chunks of story or backstory that were missing. You could figure out, at a basic level, the reasons why some things happened, but I found I rarely cared. A number of the plot points and scenes felt like they were there simply to set up something you'd see later on (placing or re-arranging chess pieces) with no other real weight. That's not to mention a large B-plot that seems to be mostly superfluous to the A-plot. For such a quality cast, I am surprised how little I cared about any of the characters... or the plot... or the aesthetic... or much of anything. Huge letdown.
I loved Noah Jupe's acting, that kid was the real star here. The screenplay is good (Joel and Ethan Coen) but something in the directing did not get the best of the plot. Maybe the music is not good either.
I really like weird and original movies, and this one was a solid 9 for me for the first hour or so. But it's too long, it drags too much on jokes that stop being funny and become boring.
[tv+] Translating the symbolism of a novel onto the screen, especially when they establish a web of relationships, is too complicated. The snake that is the fruit of original sin at the same time represents the end of a Victorian era based on fear. There is so much material at stake that the series falls too short, wrapped in a fog not only formal but also narrative, which finally opts for gothic romanticism. It's not a bad decision, but it oversimplifies a much more complex story.
Very cliché and predictable, but still entertaining. The movie is visually pleasing and, there are great performances from the actors. Worth watching.
This movie restored some of my faith in the industry. After the destruction of the Marvel and Star Wars franchises by Disney and the dumbing down of almost all US films, this movie is a breath of fresh air.
Doesn't necessate much words ....simply awesome, i can see myself watching it twice or three times with the same enthusiasm
David Lynch's singular take on coming-of-age movies plays on the contrast of the sugar-coated idealized suburban town and the dark, twisted world that lies beneath. It's a film that is rich in metaphors and suggestive film noir-reminiscent shots, but at the same time rather poor and half-baked in terms of contents. The plot only vaguely elaborates on Jeffrey's fascination for Dorothy's world and the effect she has on him. Their sadomasochistic relationship gets just roughly sketched out, and there is no real consequence for what happens. Come on, it literally took one single phone call to forgive Jeffrey and have him reborn as the new hero. Isabella Rossellini was visually good for the role but her acting was unbearable.
The scenes with Frank and his gang were fairly entertaining, but overall the film lacks the edginess and transgressiveness that it needed. It might have been disturbing enough for conservative viewers in 1986, but feels a bit goofy now in 2020.
It's indeed an interesting work to take into examination inside Lynch's filmography as the same concept and atmosphere will be later reprised and revised in "Twin Peaks".
I get what the movie was trying to show/say - really it was so dumbed down and overly clear that it felt patronising - but that doesn't make up for the fact of how utterly boring it was. Cinematography was brilliant, but I suppose it's up to personal taste. I prefer films with some form of plot/action.
Life in a nutshell.
The Tree of Life is one of the most stunning movies I've ever seen. The cinematography is something that you can't take your eyes away from, it's just that stunning. Emmanuel Lubezki is the master of cinematography, I mean he's right up there with Roger Deakins, Vittorio Storaro, and Robert Richardson. Terrence Malick direction was pure brilliant, even when sometimes he dose get a little bit carried away with some of the imagery, but all that aside, this is a beautiful film that's not going to be for everyone.
Dialogue heavy adaptation of Philip Roth's novel is perhaps more suited to the stage. The film is not without merit, but there are times when the film tests the patience with all of its moralising and speech giving.
If you think this movie is great, suggest you to watch a Spanish movie called Los Cronocrímenes aka Timecrimes, with only 4 actors, tells a awesome time travel story with got awards. Triangle is boring, confusing and in the end predictable and messy.
genuinely enjoyable if you go in without knowing the plot. i highly recommend it that way. even when i was ahead of the film and figured out the twist, going into it blind kept me invested even when i knew what was going on. i imagine knowing anything more about the plot than the idea of there being a loop would really take away from the experience. i do have to echo the sentiment of why tf heather is a character but other than that, i liked this a lot.
I think I'll keep this show on hold for some more days.
The cinematography is great and dancing all looked fantastic. The score was amazing. The editing and sound design were great. It does a good job of creeping you out. A slow burn until the bat shit crazy third act. I need to see it again to even try and begin to understand what happened but I think I loved it.
Showing the studio set at the end and beginning was not necessary.

I did not expect this show to rigidly follow the path of John Spartan shown in the Halo franchise, and was delighted with what I saw. Despite the comments by the trolls and the Halo purist's the elements are all there and a central female character is needed for a television audience, the storyline is just a slight detour in a Halo multiverse (to mix metaphor's). I thought it was a GREAT start for a television series and want to see more. Way to go Paramount!
I am a sci-fi fan, not a gamer...don't care about the game story or the books.....All I saw was an excellent first epidode of a new sci-fi series. I don't think they ever intended for it to be an accurate representation of the game. I mean who would spend millions to make a series or TV show only to appeal to a limited number of hard core game fans??? This series so far only 1 episode, but I for one am loving it.
I’m all for metaphorical films but this is just lazy. A history teacher spots himself in a film which his colleague recommends. It's all normal until he and his look-alike finally meet. I think I understand the message it's trying to say but the experience is very tedious and empty and this film ends up saying nothing. I find this film to care more about being artsy then being enjoyable. It has zero entertainment value. This film tries to accomplish classic twin story, same characters with contrasting personality, but I don't think it succeeds at that. Their behaviours feels very forced, their motivations are unreasonable and the conflict between them just doesn't seem realistic to me. The strange imagery is just another attempt to make the film more interesting, sadly it doesn't work. The characters beside the twins are pretty much lifeless, like they don't want to be there in the first place. Also I'm not a fan of the color palette and some stylistic choices used in this film. It looks like piss. The score is the only thing they really put effort into. I won't recommend this film to anyone.
