This is a terrible, terrible movie! Does it deserve 1 point? No. Are there worse films - yes. But this is totally boring movie, that has been promoted as Liam Neeson flick, so it deserves a higher criteria in valuation and thus for me it's complete bullish. The movie is so ordinary and the script is so bland it's painful to watch. It is one and a half hour long that slogs like 3 hours. An action movie, that I had to sleep through before watching the last 20 minutes, that's how hopelessly unwatchable it is. Obviously Liam Neeson is at the end of his career, but he is a good actor and it is shame that he has been stereotypically cast in the last 10 years playing the same role of ex-spy, ex-marine, ex-commando etc. who has been put in a place to protect innocents over and over again, which ofc is his role in The Marksman. The movie is not as appalling as any DeNiro movie in the last decade, but still I would rate it lower than that. Because sometimes even a bad movie can have more entertaining value than an average movie. For example, I'd rather see Chuck Norris Missing in Actionthan any movie Neeson or Deniro did in the last 10 years.
It's not a good movie. While being historically accurate, the problem of "Midway" is that it doesn't depict the battle in apprehensible way. So you watch some airplanes fly, so you see the flack, so you look at some not great SGI aircraft carriers and listen to a story of how USA has trapped the japs. Then you see more airplanes fly, and further more airplanes fly, and even more airplanes, but what exactly has been happening is never explained. In fact I watched the movie, understood nothing, then I watched 20 minutes documentary on YouTube that explained everything that happened in the battle of Midway very thoroughly and then I said, "oooh yeah, oh that was really what was going on, ooh these airplanes were the first squadron, and those where the second squadron, etc. and now it makes sense, oh yeah. Now I see the movie is true to the story". But that is exactly the problem. Why would I need to see 3 hour long movie which doesn't tell what exactly happened if I could easily be more entertained and informed if I saw a documentary movie. Really, on youTube they have great videos, depicting the Midway battle, with maps, detailed explanations and animations that are far more interesting than this... thing.
I didn't like it overall. It felt rushed and the scenario did a lot of shortcuts just for moving the plot forward. For example one asks: "How do you know something?" And the answer is "I have a feeling". There are so many plot holes and so little suspension of disbelieve. They tried to insert some false drama, for which no one cared so much. For example when in the end of "The Last jedi" Skywalker became one with the force while mirroring the scene of "A new hope" when Luke's journey started with the beautiful musical force theme playing, it was very touching. As Episode 4-6 are the movies of my childhood, the scene of the old dying Luke was very sad, because, I guess, the star wars story is a part of my life. I perceived my self as Luke probably and I thought that Luke will always be the young jedi who I've seen in the first movies. So when Luke died, it was kind of a reminder for my own ageing and mortality. In this movie I didn't have such notion. I was indifferent.
I liked the visuals a lot and the music was really great. Some of the music was variations of Knights of the old republic game soundtrack, which is marvelous. Unfortunately the presentation alone is not enough for making a great movie. Anyway, now it's over and hopefully we'll get something new and in a new direction as Rogue 1, which I liked very much.
