Like a Boss

This movie is the definition of bad clichés, that besides good actors doesn't offer anything. The story is pretty foreseeable (e.g. Salma Hayek's character Claire Luna adds a clause to their contract that she would get the company if the partners fight and one of them leaves - so obviously the entire story evolves on how they are going to break up). On the comic side we have a mixture of jokes building on clichés (gay clichés, toxic masculinity, etc), dirty jokes and slapstick that didn't manage to get me laughing once.

So coming from an average 5/10 I don't find anything that weighs in on the plus side, but both jokes and bad story writing that substract a point each, leaving us with 3/10.

Tales from the Crypt: Season 1

Good average first season with some really strong episodes (such as the second, fourth and fifth) but also some rather dull ones (such as the first and the sixth), leveling tihs season to an average good 5/10 points

Tales from the Crypt: 1x04 Only Sin Deep

Every Back to the Future fan will turn heads at this episode that features Lorraine (Baines) McFly, mother of Back to the Future's main star Marty McFly. The story is original and fun to watch as it is really interesting, although near the end a bit irrational (why is she destroying everything around when she could simply take it and be gone without any buzz?). In the end, we get another irony of life ending, with an agony of choice.

I rather enjoyed this one, and for a good story, a good (and tragic) ending and a good performance I end up with 7/10 Points.

Tales from the Crypt: 1x03 Dig That Cat...He's Real Gone

Until the end, it was not really strong, acting is average, but some of the characters (the Barker and the girlfriend) are actually rather annoying. Also I am no fan of the supposedly funny style and camera angles chosen. However, this episode actually ends with an interesting and funny twist, once more an "irony of life" ending, that I did not see coming, and that was somewhat satisfying and made me smile.

So in the end, we get an all around okey episode, that is fun to watch: 5/10 points.

Tales from the Crypt: 1x02 And All Through the House

As much as I did not like the first episode I love the second: Starting of with a scene of rather dark humor, we get into a really great mix between thrilling and horrifying scenes accompanied by funny ones as well as ironic ones. The acting of our main character, played by Mary Ellen Trainor (known from the Leathal Weapon films) is really great (although it's really odd that she does not freeze at all, even when kneeling on the ground with her bear legs), the episode is really atmospheric and manages to hit the sweet spot between funny on the one side and horrifying on the other.

We also have some nice camera work, that I did not expect (e.g. the scene in the storeroom that is only shown from the top shelf perspective showing the gun that she cannot see - I really loved that scene). This is great fun to watch.

Tales from the Crypt: 1x01 The Man Who Was Death

First episodes are always hard, and while I do love the series, the first episode is nothing special, even though they started off with a star, that you might know from back in the days series and movies like Star Trek - Deep Space 9 or Die Hard 2, but who is still active even today, e.g. in The Highwaymen or When They See Us. But William Sadler cannot turn this rather dull and totally foreseeable story into anything better. Most of the time he is just narrating, so hardly any performance is required by any of the actors. And as said, even though the story is ironic and black-humored, it's foreseeable and does not provide any surprises. Additionally, I don't think it's that funny. So starting with a 5/10 for every movie, I'd go down two points (rather boring and foreseeable and nothing else that is interesting).

The Simpsons: 1x07 The Call of the Simpsons

While I really like the settle press and media critique that this episode bears (hehe), the overall story is rather dull and additionally this episode looses more and more of its initial fun the more you re-watch it. This would make it totally balanced at neither good nor bad, but I do have a lot of fun watching Maggie in this one, and to the extend that it's possible for a cartoon baby, I feel like this is the first one that gives some well deserved focus on one of the last members of the famiily. Therefore: 6/10

The Simpsons: 1x05 Bart the General

This episode marks the first appearance of Nelson 'Haha' Muntz, and is yet another early episode that follows the typical two-story setup of the Simpsons: We have the entire entry story with Lisa and her cupcakes, those are the binding element that leads to the second story of Bart being bullied by Nelson and how he stands up for himself.

Unfortunately, there is nothing else I like about this episode. I like the rhyming and the ending sequence where Bart puts some "perspective" to the episode (there are not good wars - with these exceptions... :D ). But besides that, I think this episode is rather seldom funny (if at all), the story is - at least to me - uninteresting and it doesn't offer me any deeper level. So given the negative aspects over-weighing the positives a little, I end up with:

4/10 Points.

Only the Brave

I've never heard of this movie before I've seen it and I was lucky to see it in a sneak preview. This is an incredibly touching movie, that at first glance might look like your typical Michael Bay catastrophic movie, that makes use of all cliches.

Still this movie is different, instead of telling you beforehand who's good and who's bad and having only little time for the buildup but then dwell on the catastrophic event with as much action as possible, this movie actually spends a lot of time on it's main cast, and it does so only to then totally punch you in the guts. There is hardly any action, and in no way is this movie overdone. But what you get to see get's you more than any action movie could.

Wow, this was intense and unexpected (bear in mind that I am from Germany and never heard of the story this is based on).

At the end, I was totally touched. A really great testimonial that honors a couple of selfless heroes in their sacrifice. A must see!

Ben

What I game "Willard" as a bonus on top of my rating, I cannot give to Ben as well, because everything done in "Ben" was already was done once in its predecessor. The big problem: The predecessor is better at it in all aspects:

The Acting was mediocre and I cannot point out any actor that was as interesting in their performance as where Bruce Davison or Ernest Borgnine. Also the characters motivation is really strange - knowing what has happened it is in no way conceivable that the boy hides the rat and even keeps the incredible dangerous looking "base" a secret, while his sister even covers for him?

Story is nothing special as well with no surprises what so ever. Also it seemed that there where a lot more special effects, the rats looked somehow off, when there where larger numbers of them. This is what a bad sequel looks like, and despite it being younger it feels like being the older one, with worse quality and production value.

Peppermint

In this movie, Jennifer Garner plays a woman that takes justice into her own hands after witnessing and experiencing an incredible crime for which no one gets punished due to the corrupt justice system in the US. Because of this, our hero has to fight both, a drug cartel as well as the justice system, who see her actions as a criminal act of terrorism.

To keep it short: This movie has it's moments and is in its entirety nice to watch. However, compared to the overwhelming competition with movies such as John Wick, The Equalizer or Atomic Blonde, this movie does not risk anything - no interesting stunts, no interesting fight choreographics, no interesting dolly shots - all scenes that could be interesting are cut together from different takes and are so fast paced that makes you loose interest. Jennifer Garners performance is in general all right but the one or other scene even she is not as believable as you would wish. And the plot is totally foreseeable.

Still it's a nice movie for a diverting evening - but nothing you have to see, and especially not at cinemas.

Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams

This is an extremely well made, really interesting documentary. The band had luck to have met Mat Whitecross, a guy that was at the beginning of his career when he met the four guys that themselves where at the beginning of their career. Because of this, Mat has gathered a huge amount of early days footage from behind the scenes, and in the end, what we get is a seemingly complete history of Coldplay, from the formation at collage to their first gig, first studio works up till their greatest concert tour from 2016-2018.

For everybody even remotely interested in Coldplay (I wouldn't call myself a hardcore fan, I never visited a tour and only have a couple of their albums) this is a no-brainer to watch. I was lucky enough to catch it at the cinemas and it was a great atmosphere with all those hardcore Coldplay fans :D

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

I guess nobody needed this move. I am not a big fan of the original, I did not see any point in doing a remake.

I have to say, however, that I was positively suprised. Kevin Hart isn't as anyoing as he is in most of his other movies, Dwayne Johnson plays really good, and Karen Gillian was also really great. I especially loved how those managed to capture the essence of their real life counterparts that we encountered in the beginning of the movie.

The story however has nothing interesting. I loved the end though - I expected a cheesy love story end, but got something different. Good job!

The Mountain Between Us

I really liked this movie. I liked how it started, I did not expect the movie to be what it actually was (I expected more of an action packed movie), I liked the chemistry between the actors, the alternation between dependency and mistrust, the conflicts arrising due to the differences in character.

In the middle I was a bit disappointing I loved the idea of both of them learning to accept the other, and their perks as they get to know each other better - but I wouldn't have needed the love story and sex scene - not at that point of the movie, as this takes away a lot of the ending.

The end however, I mostly loved. Especially the ending of Kate Winslets character, her being disconnected to everything that used to be her life, but also Idris Elba withdrawing himself - I get that and I loved how they showed it. The end was a bit cheesy though...

The Commuter

It's a typical Liam Neeson thriller. You'll get what you expect, not more but also not less. I was entertained, but it's nothing you'll have to see, even though it has a number of really great actors, some of my favorite (especially also two TV series stars!), whom I really loved to see again. Pretty much similar to Nonstop, though.

Daddy's Home 2

It's a pretty decent comedy. Nothing special, not too funny, but also not too bad. Mark Wahlberg is okey, Will Ferrell is not my favorite actor and of John Lithgow I've seen far better. However, Mel Gibson is pretty cool, he's a definite win for this movie.

The story is also quite nice, and fit's into the christmas spirit, so all in all a nice watch, though no must see and also nothing worth going to the cinema for.

Splinter

This movie totally suprised me. My expectations where really low, because I got the BluRay handed down by someone who thought the movie was horrible (together with other titles such as Pinup Girls on Ice, Sirens, etc.), and so I had next to no expectations.

In the beginning I thought, that they would come true - it's a low budget movie, the effects in the introduction did not look like much, and the introduction scene was not that good, either - some strange animal attacking that guy in a really fast paced shakey montage, not the best dialogues, the acting kind of random. But all in all I pretty fast changed my mind: First of all, the shots are greatly done, especially for a low budget movie. The acting is great as well - there is no VIP involved, but all of them have good talent, the special effects are all hand made and this is ingenious - it looks great, once they stopped with the fast-paced shakey cams. And the idea is quite original and innovative.

Not a milestone for movies or cinema, but definately worth a watch if you are into creature feature horror movies.

House at the End of the Street

I really enjoyed this movie. I am much less fond of Jennifer Lawrence than everybody else seems to be, but in this movie she actually does a really good job. All actors are pretty good.

The movie starts of really bloody, but still also really artistic - I love how the movie starts, or the murder that we only witness from underneath the bed by watching the pillow feathers fall down like snow; great images caputed.

Then we have a typical setup to a climax, which starts really slow, introducing all the important characters and their relation to each other, until it starts getting exciting, two or three times (e.g. when she get's away twice, or the bone breaking scene).

And while you might always feel that ther could be something wrong, you're not sure entirely and the movie really builds up on that, with a couple of suprising twists.

So all in all, I was excited and well entertained, I loved the acting, I loved the music, the color grading, the visuals. Good movie:

4/5 points

Coffy

After watching Foxy Brown, I am a bit disappointed by this one. In my opinion, Pam Grier isn't as strong as she is in Foxy Brown, so this is the first down side. Second, the stroy is nearly identical, which is sad, but okey (same applies to every Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movie). But also the story is not as easy to follow as was the case with Foxy Brown - things just happen (we're suddenly in that strip bar, and noone questions why Coffy is there as well, etc.; or Coffy gets attackt in her car, and of course the police officer is just there; or the fighting scene at the beginning, etc.).

I liked the soundtrack a bit better, but all in all, I had not all to much fun with this one. Maybe my rating would have been better if I had watched this one first... I don't know...

If you are interested in these kind of blaxploitation movies and what to get a look into where Quentin Tarantino got his inspiration from for Jackie Brown, I'd rather recommend you to watch Foxy Brown.

Master of the Flying Guillotine

It was in parts funny due to its absurdity. All in all I was, however pretty board; I can see what Quentin Tarantino used for his movie, and he did it to perfection; the original is however not perfect at all.

And it's not because it is a B-Movie; I do enjoy these. But for this movie, the story is weak, the action is somewhat fun, but after watching 20 Minutes of constant fighting, it just get's boring - and out of 93 minutes, we have about 20 minutes of story, and the rest is just fighting, be it for demonstration purposes (beginning), or the tournament (main part), or the final showdowns...

Not my cup of tea. :(

And the funny ideas inbetween are simply just not enough (I did laugh about the Guillotine, or the Yoga Master with his absurd growing arms, and of course the daughter whos fighting move is undressing the opponent :D).

The Boondock Saints

I think watching "The Boondock Saints" on St. Paddies Day is a nice tradition - whether you're Irish or not ;)

This cult movie that is clearly created on a budget is a great flick that guarantees for a good time. Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, Willem Dafoe, Billy Connolly and David Della Rocco give us some really great acting and a pretty action-packed movie, that is only topped by it's crazy unconventional story that include a number of absurd scenes and crazy dialogs.

Some crazy shit that due to it's unfortunate backstory this movie never gained the attention it should have gotten. To me a cult classic that does not need to hide itself! If you haven't seen it, watch it. I guess if you like movies such as the ones by Tarantino you will also love this one!

Hot Pursuit

One of the unfunniest comedy I've ever seen; it does not have a single good joke, it is totally overacted and cliché-ridden, it is totally forseeable, it does not even close all lose ends (why are the cops in this again?), things just happen unexplainedly, the characters behave stupid most of the time. The action is not interesting, the characters are not interesting, the story is totally boring, wow. This is unimaginable bad.

Only the acting is okey, if you know Reese Witherspoon from other movies you can tell that here she is playing a role - and fullfilling it perfectly - to the best of the script. But that's all the positive that I can find and that I can tell.

It won't hurt you to see this, but you wouldn't want to spend any dime for it, because that's just not worth it. And if you've got anything better to do, probably spend your time doing that, instead. However, for a boring evening, with nothing else to do and nothing else to watch, it will make time pass a little bit faster...

Before I Go to Sleep

Over all a good movie with some twist I wasn't expecting. Most of it is obvious, though. Acting is good and it has a pretty atmospheric setting, which is nice. However, I felt remembered of Memento, and trying to play in that arena, this movie clearly isn't as good, as the original. Non the less, I think it's great to watch.

And So It Goes

Good acting (is there anything else to expect from two acting veterans?), but the story is totally transparent, making it a rather boring movie from the beginning to the end. Nice if you have nothing better to do and want to watch some tele, but not worth the money for the cinema ticket...

The Maze Runner

I thought it had a great start, you didn't really know what's happening and what to expect (didn't read the book). But going on, the movie developed typical stereotypes:

  • The guy that knows nothing, yet becomes the hero that saves all
  • The former leader that dies
  • The person that doesn't follow the hero and later in a showdown manages to kill an innocent
  • The sci-fi conspiracy
  • The S.O. that has no function other than supporting the hero.

It's in this pattern non-different to many other movies that just came out (Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.), but in a more general sense follows a lot of movies. So arround the middle I got pretty bored, as the yet original start became more and more transparent with no supprises at all. Very unfortunate, could have been a great movie, if it had tried something new.

Btw. I didn't read the book, so my short review does not take that into consideration.

A Most Wanted Man

Good movie, althoug for a German movie I (as a German) found it somewhat disconnecting that actors I know speak English all the time and - making it worse - try to pronounce German names in a way that English people would pronounce it. Why the hell?

Not that I have a problem with English movies (I try to watch all my movies in original language (with subtitles if neccessary) and 90% of these are English) as is. But a German movie in Germany played by German actors shown to a German public in English - that's mighty strange. As well as it was strange that Moslem people when with each other, spoke English, and not Arabic.

Would have loved it, if they did what Tarantino did back with Inglorious Basterds; there would have still be plenty of room for English with all the contacts these people where suppose to have with American Contact persons. And then use subtitles whereever needed. I mean for a movie that depicts the conflict of interest of international collaboration in fighting terrorism a bit more international touch would have been great.

Other than that, however, the movie was really great. I enjoyed it a lot, the actors played their roles well and it was great to see a movie that just depicted the field of problems without judging - it's hard to find someone to relate to, there is no good or bad - you feel like you're thrown into something where you can understand the reasoning and interests of the different people, but where you cannot say "Ok, that guy's the good one, and that's the bad".

I really liked that about the movie.

Deliver Us from Evil

I liked it. It's not the best movie ever made, but it had it's moments, there where some shockers that even got me (and that happens seldom) and all in all I had fun. I have to agree with Gazoo69 about the exorcism, though. That was a bit long and all in all quite disappointing. Other than that, a tad to religious for my taste.

But besides that a good movie. Was fun watching it!

The Volcano

It had one or two funny moments (justifying the 4 I gave), but all in all, this was really weak. The characters where totally unbelievable (I mean really, who would still take pitty on a evil bitch who is not only mean but also tries to steal the car twice and totally wrecks it)? Still the overall plot is forseeable, the jokes are in generall not funny at all...

Not the worst movie I've seen, but pretty close.

About Last Night

This one's not worth your time and money: Forseeable plot, typical cliché, and a boring story-line, with jokes that weren't funny at all! I was actually relieved, when it was finally over and couldn't wait to get out of the cinema (normaly I stay until the credits end).
