The Queen's Gambit: 1x07 End Game

What was up with that last shot being done with a hand held camera? All the shaking was so jarring and awful.

Townes showing up again was a nice touch. And all the guys getting together back home to brainstorm and help her out was SO sweet! .

Lovely series. I don't even know how to play chess, but I really enjoyed it.

Didn't necessarily think they needed an episode from the parents perspective but glad they did in the end. Good world building this ep and really liked the scene with Molly and Gert at the end. It works well having them as sisters in this version.

I hope of all the changes they make they don't shy away from Karolina's sexuality though. It would be a shame to ignore a key part of her identity.

@reiko_lj Hope that party scene with the girls kissing is pointing towards that direction :D

And totally agreed about Molly and Gert. Initially though "wtf, why did they change it" and then was totally digging out their new groove :D

  • He's an FBI agent! You can't do this to him!
  • In Perpetuum
  • So she just ate the rat?
  • I swear Dirk is the Doctor
  • Lol, that was a strange encounter
  • Dirk, lmao. Open the gate next time
  • Dirk just had that in his pocket
  • Okay
  • That exchange between Todd, Farah and Amanda, though
  • It's funny cause he let the dog kill Nathan
  • What do you want, Todd?
  • And... that's a lot of lights
  • That's probably the message, Dirk
  • They're going to need the magic light bulb and put it in an empty socket, huh?
  • Watkin in Star War?
  • I was right!
  • What if it turns out they need all the light bulbs on to survive?
  • Nvm, I was wrong
  • Wow, the duality of two men
  • Stop fangirling, Amanda
  • RIP Farah
  • What if the roof closes in, Dirk?
  • Apology!
  • He was smiling
  • You put the horn in the rhino head?
  • Pepe?
  • Oooh, that's some janky CGI rhino
  • Why did the rhino make them strip?
  • I'm glad they subverted my expectations
  • Bruh, you think she's going to go with you?
  • Oooh, screens
  • Todd, look, he's not freaking out—
  • It's the guardian angel gang
  • Amanda's the Chosen One, huh?
  • Wow, he killed a helpless woman. He must be the bad guy

SCORE: 5.5/10

@clobby-clobsters (copied my own comment from another post) Actually, Douglas Adams wrote some episodes for Doctor Who. Some of the unused ideas, he used to write the third Hitchhiker's book "Hitchhiker’s Guide, Life, The Universe and Everything" and also came up with Dirk Gently... The Mandalorian: 2x08 Chapter 16: The Rescue

Pretty cool but a few issues…

  • Four people taking down an entire Imperial cruiser without so much as a scratch is a bit excessive…
  • I know Luke Skywalker is OP AF but him cutting through all those Dark Troopers after all that build up is a bit too easy / kinda disappointing / kinda deux ex machina
  • CGI Luke was hella disappointing. I was so ready to see Mark Hamill (and that ridiculous hood covering his face was pretty overt — guess he was just showing off how skilled he is, doesn't even need to see lol). I guess he'd have been a bit too old (this is a bit over 5 years after ROTJ) but I feel like they could have figured something out. Hell I wouldn't have cared. Maybe they offered but he turned them down though, who knows
  • After all that, handing Grogu off to a stranger without even asking his name or his number!?
  • Never got to know what they wanted with Grogu / his blood — were they trying to clone him, what? I feel like they may never address this…

The Magicians: 5x08 Garden Variety Homicide

Wow, Julia! Congrats! Not only you're turbo cooking one in the oven, you're also the one person who actually stabbed Seb! Also, can we please get some of those Fillory pregnancy tests here on Earth? They sound so much more fun at the time of giving the test result, instead of that boring pink cross or double stripe or whatever.

Of course Margo switching bodies with Eliot would be fun! And of course they'd fuck shit up for each other. But what's adorable is that, amidst all the body switching confusion, they were still good friends to one other. If you think about it, Margo and Eliot (or Eliot and Margo, not sure what's catchier to say) represent one of the finest bromances around (for 5 seasons in a row!).

The worst thing about this episode, though, was the very last scene. So, they stab the immortal —allegedly evil (it's starting to seem like there's more to that than we know) — ruler, who's already been murdered several times in the past (again, immortal), and they don't stick around to confirm that he's actually dead, for realsies, this time? They just leave him alone right on the spot where they stabbed him and hoped Mother Nature would do her thing? Sloppy writing doesn't suit The Magicians...

Now, that new "world seed" plot line looks very, very intriguing! I can't wait to meet The Couple!

loading replies

@misnomer So true.... for a moment I thought children of earth would be the cause of apocalypse in Fillory. But now I see we can hope something really bad coming :open_mouth:

loading replies
The Magicians: 5x05 Apocalypse? Now?!

Of course you'd need 5 days without sleep to kindly convince the Moon to move a bit. The Magicians logic is the best logic (and I say this without a hint of sarcasm).

Kady & Zelda on a quest, together? Again, this season sure is getting experimental with pairing up characters. Which works wonderfully for us, the humble viewers, since it's not only working, the weird matching is also keeping us further entertained.

Fen's genuine belief in "the maid on the outside" being an actual thing is adorable. I love when she goes solo, she's so much wackier than what her candid looks make her seem to be (OK, she went nuts with the knives a couple of episodes earlier, who am I kidding? Fen is absolutely deranged!). I really want to see more of her solo mission, obviously oblivious of the fairies' not-so-nice intentions!

I sure hope that was just Eliot high on moon brain (and yummy meth cookies), I really don't want to lose him again for that monster. Also, it wouldn't be fair if the monster would be back, but not Quentin. Wait, is Quentin coming back?!

Did I detect a plot hole? Marina shouldn't have been able to (ask to) move the Moon, since she didn't have moon brain. But with all the quirkiness of this show, I can most certainly forgive them for that (if it was, indeed, a plot hole — I can't even tell that for sure and I love the fact that I can't).

Bringing back Marina was great (still my second favourite bitch on the show), but bringing her back blonde with an uglier haircut must have been the work of a very sadistic trickster.

And finally, that ending, wow! Goodbye tides and bird migration.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: 6x05 The Other Thing

[8.1/10] There were basically three stories here: 1. Mac’s adventures back at Shield headquarters, 2. Quake, FItzSimmons, and company’s advenutres in space, and 3. May’s adventures with “Sarge.” Let’s take them in turn (and in ascending order of quality!).
Mac’s story feels like filler. The bad blood/broken heart routine between him and Yo-Yo is execrable, and feels like a regrettable place to put what was once my favorite couple in. I get that characters need places to go, and that it’s worth exploring what happens when things go wrong, but I liked Mac and Yo-Yo much more when they were reluctant but flirty, serious about their jobs and devoted to one another but playful with each other. This whole “you know how I feel” distance between them is feh.

His exchanges with Benson are also a waste. I appreciate the show trying to add dimension to Benson, since he’s pretty undeveloped as a new character. But his arc goes from, “I’m not up to this” to “I’m a member of the team!” in the span of like two scenes, and all it takes is a generic speech from Mac to get him there.

The space shenanigans are pretty fun though! Agents of Shield turned into the latest Star Trek spin-off so gradually, I didn’t even notice! The idea of Enoch being hounded by his equally emotionally bizarre ex is a bit cheesy, but I like their dynamic. I like the dynamic between Fitz and Enoch even better. Enoch thinks of Fitz as his best friend, but he is so devoid of empathy and understanding (or at least has so different a view of morality), that he tells his counterparts to put Simmons in danger because he knows it’s the only thing that could motivate his “friend” to do the impossible and, thus, make him useful (and thus non-disposable) to the other Chronicoms. It’s a well-intentioned choice, that’s mitigated by the fact that Fitz would rather die than let Simmons be in danger. Whatever the complicated ethical snags at play, it promises something interesting among the FitzSimmons/Enoch portion of the show that seems poised to remain space bound.

We do get some plot reveal (a trend in this episode), learning that the Chronicoms’ home planet was mostly destroyed, and that now they’re trying to go back in time to undo that. It’s pretty out there, but that’s part and parcel with AoS’s increasingly crazy silver age bent, and I’m on board with it. Plus we get some decent quaking, and an unexpectedly warm reunion back on Earth for her and the newly-promoted, bickering Shield cadets (Piper is one, I think?) who are clearly going to end up dating.

Last, but anything but least, we have an interrogation between May and “Sarge.” I appreciate the formal boldness here. Blurring May’s torture (or at least threats) from Sarge with her fond memories of Coulson at Tahiti is disorienting, in a good way. It conveys the pleasure and pain that exists for May to see the man she loves (or at least someone who looks him) again, knowing that he is a pale reflection of the man she knew. At the same time, the use of common phrases or gestures not only help add to the mystery of just who Sarge is, but help complicate May’s motivations and responses to all of this.

In terms of plot, we find out that Sarge’s crew aren’t actually the bad guys (or at least, that it’s more complicated than that), when we discover that they’re hunting the obelisk-esque bats that have been attacking people lately (and vaguely connect to lay-lines somehow). We also learn that Sarge, at least on his own account, has no idea who Coulson is or why they share a face, and claims to be more than a century old. That definitely messes with my theory that He’s a skrull who got the Coulson look from one of the skrulls who visited Earth in Captain Marvel.

But I’m intrigued on both fronts! Emotionally, I like exploring the effect of blending love and hatred in the form of one man whose face engenders both her. And plot-wise, I like both the continuing mystery of who this dude is, and the notion that he and his pals are trying to wipe out some intergalactic scourge (implied to be part of what destroyed the Chronicoms) before it spreads any further.
Overall, I’d go so far as to call this the best ep of the season so far, with one clunker of a C-story, but an A-story and a B-story that nicely mix some good character-based moments with some crazy imaginative sci-fi material.

The 100: 5x13 Damocles (2)

I liked the final but there is something on my mind again:

Why didn't they sent the ship with one sacrifice (the driver) to catch the damn bomb. I don't know much about the explosives but with a ship like that you can easily catch it. It would detonate on impact so if he could land land it on the ship only the ship would explode and crash, right? Or maybe try and slow it down by catching it by going a slightly lower speed as the bomb drops. :p A bit extreme but in theory it would work. As hythylodium is fictional I don't know if it would spread to the surface and still kill everything when exploded into the sky so just keep it at that and nothing I said would be valid. :)

But anyway I liked the final and would love to watch the next season. With the new planet new dangers await and there is lots of exploring and meeting new lifeforms to do. I guess there would be life on the planet if it's inhabitable, idk. Let's wait and see :)

Arrow: 7x07 The Slabside Redemption

Well, I for once, enjoyed the episode. I don't know if it's because it was action-packed or what, but I definitely enjoyed it. I'm sad the prison scenes are gone. I'm definitely gonna miss them, but I'm happy Oliver got out. I knew that friend in there was a rotten apple, although I was expecting him to be the Demon.
The whole plot with Diaz was plain horrible. I swear I loved the character last season (at least when he started doing something) but the writers dragged that story a lot, at least for my taste and in this episode, it looks like they wrote themselves into a corner and didn't know what to do with him next. That doesn't change the fact that Kirk Acevedo rocks every minute he's on screen. That scene when he was talking to Oliver via phone was great.

Diggle! Only he can appear for just one second, do absolutely nothing and still make me laugh so hard. Where the hell did he go? Is he training for Elseworlds and doing a The Flash impression? I laughed so damn hard. And if you look closely, there's a building out there that also disappears. I'm sure those skills will come in handy at the end of the season. Go for it Diggle!

That said, I'm so looking forward to seeing Oliver and the New Green Arrow together, who I still think it's a girl. And I need more Fkashforward scenes and Roy all suited up.

loading replies

@vero-winchester agreed on so many points. I did think the dude was the Demon at first. Didn't notice the building vanishing, but did notice Diggle beaming up to the USS Arrowprise lol

Legion: 2x11 Chapter 19

They've been hinting at it all season, but making David literally the villain, with heavy themes like sexual abuse involved is a tough and ridiculously bold move, and I'm not sure whether audiences will go with it. It'll be interesting to see how they deal with it in the next season.

Season 2 hasn't for me been on the same level as the spectacular S1, but Legion is still one of the most inventive, interesting and engaging shows currently on TV.

The Flash: 4x21 Harry and the Harrisons

For episode 21 I expected a lot more. However, it had some good moments like the Caitlin and Joe stuff.

"DeVoe can't hide from us anymore". Ok, are you seriously telling me that random guys have seen DeVoe casually walking down the street and you, guys who work at STAR Labs where you've got a freaking satellite to look for him, haven't? Besides, why is none of the citizens surprised to see DeVoe walking? And also, can't DeVoe shapeshift into whoever he wants, so that if he wants he can technically still hide from you? I guess that last question can be easily answered. DeVoe has become a kind of god and his hubris is probably making him be himself and not others. On a low keynote, I can't believe that the citizens of Central City are so naive. You tell me that a super intelligent professor who travels on a flying chair is planning to build satellites to remove everyone's intelligence and I'd laugh at your face. I'm still included to believe that some of the people answering go Iris' article are trolls.

Amunet being back was great. I sort of like her and she makes me laugh so I'll give her a pass. However, the fact that they let escape someone who's been dealing with human trafficking gets on my nerves. And that little ball of metal she made is supposed to stop the satellites? Well, if you only have one shot, why don't you, I don't know, make more? And why is no one wondering "hey, what if DeVoe already knows what we're doing and has a backup plan for it? I always found myself thinking," he already knows, guys!"

The Caitlin and Joe interactions were probably my favourite part of the episode. They barely interact and so it surprised me that it was so natural. I'd love to see more scenes of them. Every episode since Killer Frost was gone we've had Caitlin trying to bring her back somehow and this storyline is going nowhere. She'll eventually get her back, but still. By the end of the season Caitlin will have found (insert a random number) ways of how to not bring Killer Frost back. I get the feeling that she'll be back in the most absurd way. That or Caitlin gets seriously hurt and then the ice queen appears.

Tom Cavanagh keeps on impressing me with his acting skills episode after episode. How many different versions of Wells have we seen? French Wells was so fun to watch, but Herr Wells cracked me.
"Am I speaking to you? I cannot remember. Oh, wait. I'm not. The little guy that must be Cisco, put you in the box. Put the box in the pocket".
a few moments later
"Ja, remember I put you in the box. Pit the box in the pocket. Crush the box! In the pocket".

Also, the math in this show is blowing my mind. Happy face + sad face = neutral face. That's probably the only formula I've understood, lol. That was intense. No wonder Harry needed to take a nap.

I hope next episode is better than this one, cause were reaching the season finale and I hope it's intense. Also, I need to see what Marlize is up to.
