If you're a Dragon Age fan, you will love this. From the trailers I was worried it was going to be too much in the style of Castlevania or Blood of Zeus, aka adult animation focused more on action and killings than plot. And there is a fair bit of fighting, of course, but it was well balanced and the story was cool as hell. It felt just like the many stand-alone Dragon Age graphic novels do, with all the references to people and places fans of the series have long come to know and love.
And I'm not ashamed to say that the final reveal had me yelling with excitement. DA4 better be connected to the things that came to light with this show!!
It's a good story, but I wouldn't say it's a good movie. The boring kind of horror, although I use the label loosely because it feels more like a psychological thriller with ghosts. The first 15 minutes were pretty slow and uneventful, then it sort of picks up the pace (briefly) before falling back into slow exposition.
It felt to me like it was trying to do what Crimson Peak does, but poorly. The ghosts weren't the bad guys, psychologically twisted people were. But, where CP has a killer atmosphere and many moments of high tension/outright horror elements as the mystery unravels, the tension in Things Heard & Seen is very low aside from the ending, where it becomes predictable instead (especially since the beginning spoilers the ending two-thirds of the way in).
Not only that, the mystery relating to the ghosts is pretty easy to figure out and, while I liked the reveal that nothing George ever did was his own merit, it was also very predictable that he would go on a killing spree. I did enjoy the context clues they gave to let us figure out he was a manipulative narcisist from the get go, though, and watching him spiral. The "pushed to action by the evil ghost" thing feels weak, though, as did the whole cheating subplot.
That was like swallowing a brick (in the good sense). An indie movie masked as a comedy special masked as a compilation of bill wurtz youtube videos on crack. I'd seen people say it gets kind of intense around the hour mark, but I've been in a state of existential crisis for the past hour and a half. I'm not sure I'd have the strength to rewatch it anytime soon, but I loved every minute of it. Highly recommended!
And, as usual, all I have to say is: damn it, Rollo!
I'm so happy with the cameo of young Mr Numbers and Mr Wrench! They were my favourite characters from S1!! Hopefully we'll see more of Wrench in S3.
Two episodes to the end, and I'm quite sure I liked Season 1 best. I have nothing against gory television, but there are way too many moments of senseless violence, whereas in S1 there was always a sense of things being beyond the characters' control. Also, I find that S1 had more relatable (if not likeable) characters, and the thrill of the story wasn't about "I wonder when they're getting shoot", but rather, "Will they go to jail or will they run?" S2 is a bit like Game of Thrones: you know characters are going to die, you just don't know how or when yet; in S1 you think they'll live up until they get killed. Knowing death is coming is a bit anti-climatic.
That said, it's still an awesome piece of fiction!
