Am I the only one who thinks comedy/sitcoms were better in general when they didn´t grew on trees?
Up to today "The Nanny" still is one of my all time favs. Although you knew from the start of the show were it would lead, and although they were using about every possible cliché, the characters grew on me and I not only watched for the good comedy it was but to see how the story and the characters evolved.
Today, whenever I happen to find an episode running, and it is still running somewhere, I can´t resist to watch.
The last true Star Trek. Such a shame it didn't got the end it deserved.
And No, I don't consider the crap JJ Abrahms puts out Star Trek.
I rarely say this about any show/movie but this is a must see.
History can teach us a lot and I don´t know of many shows that do it as great as Band of Brothers does.
Nature documentary, BBC, David Attenborough - need I say more ?
Utterly and outright hilarious.
The forth series had a serious undertone which made it stand out a bit I think. And the final minutes are so outstanding. Altogether one of the best comedy shows of all time and one you can watch more than once.
By todays standards it might look naive but this was a groundbraking series at it's time. If you only know the remake take the time to watch this. It's worth it.
Whatever you do, do NOT watch the movies (Specials). They are basically put together from parts of the series.
The first is a shortened Version of the three-part "Saga of a Star World" which starts the show. The second is made of parts from "The Living Legend" and "Fire in Space" which are put together rather clumsy and in a different order, in the end telling a different story through large parts.
BBCs Planet shows are the best nature/wild life documentaries you will find. Calling this awesome would be an understatement.
This came out of the dark for me I had no Idea this was in production. And I'm a Star Trek Fan.
The positives: the quality of the sets, costumes and even the CGI is pretty good. Overall this looks very professional and it feels right. The script of the first episode was good, too.
The only negativ I have so far is the cast. I've seen other fan made Star Trek productions so it's not the fact that these aren't the original actors. I just feel they made the characters appear very two dimensional. But since is only the first episode maybe they will grow after all it's pretty tough to fill these shoes.
So, I hope there will be more 'cause as a Star Trek fan in the past it was like being an addict without a suply. Therefore it's always nice to see new Trek.
Supplement Sep 9, 2016:
This show has become absolutely fantastic, more than I´d ever hoped for. It feels totally Trek with the music, sound effects, the sets and costumes. And I have to change my early assessment of the actors - they really bring this characters back to life. The scripts have depth and are meaningful. For me this is as much part of the Star Trek universe as are the official shows. I´m always eager to see what the next episode will bring and I hope they will do a lot more.
Yes, from today's point of view it looks dated, even cheap at times. The CGI can't cover the fact that it was made in the mid 1990s. There is no way around that.
But let that dissuade you from watching this and you miss out on one of the best TV (not only scifi) shows ever put on TV.
BBC, David Attenborough - This one's a no brainer.
Beautiful, at times breathtaking photography. The amount of hours they put into this is crazy (watch the diaries if possible) but well worth it. This is one, if not the, most comprehensive nature documentary around. And you don´t have to be a nature freak to enjoy this. And with the end of the final episode it conveys a massage we all should think about.
I´ve been watching this ten years after it was released and a man has just become president who thinks climate change is a lie and who would do anything to get into the last nature resorts, just for exploitation, without hesitation. Not that he is the only one but you wonder how it will be ten years from now.
I know what you´re thinking and you´re right.
Probably not a lot of people would name Magnum as one of the best TV shows off all time. But it is one of those iconic and memorable shows of the 80s that you can whatch again and again. The cast was perfect for the show, it sure was Tom Sellecks role of a lifetime. The same can probably be said for Hillerman. This isn't just another detective show it´s much more. Towards the end it became more serious and character driven which didn´t hurt. I always thought this was much more about the characters and their relations than anything else.
And on a sidenote: it was sometimes mentioned that this was more a show for the women because of Selleck. But let me remind you that some of the most gorgeous women of the 80s gueststarred on Magnum.
This show might have started as a competitor to Star Trek at the time. But we are way past the question if this is the better Star Trek.
The Orville more than stands on its own. It's an amazing show.
Fact !
This is the kind of show I can watch anytime, anywhere and I will always be in a better mood than I was before.
The term "Totally Ninja !" could have been invented for this in the first place.
Update: I just read that Max Wright passed away a couple of days ago. RIP in thank you for all the great moments.
You won´t find a better nature/wild life documentary than BBCs Earth series. The level of work and dedication that went into this is amazing.
Despite all the positivity at the end I don't think we can turn things around. Sure, we could. But we won't.
You wanna save the planet - get rid of the humans. We probably need to reduce the world population by 50 %. Everything else is prolonging the inevitable. Look at the graphs for both, population growth and global surface temperature since 1960. It's no conicdence that both are climbing in unison.
This production brings something back to attention we don't think about so much today. In fact, in my case, I don't think about it at all. And I was old enough to remember it well. But it is still there, the danger is not gone, it sleeps. And at some point in the future someone will have to deal with it again. Maybe they will play it down too and try to sweep it under the rug.
Ultimately it isn't important if the events depicted here are 100 % accurate. It is historical fiction. Even the producers will admit to that. It's about the dangers, the negligence, the bureaucracy in the system, all the lies and misinformation that lead to this desaster and the aftermath. It is about the price of the lies.
The state was unfailable and everything proofing otherwise simply doesn't exist. The former Soviet Union surely doesn't hold a monopol on those kind of things (heaven knows the US is no stranger to that), but they had this down to a T and turned this into an art. We see this again years later with the sinking of the Kursk.
I had to give this a "10" not because it is enjoyable but it is important to be reminded so that those things don't happen again. That's the wishful thinking. Sadly I'm fairly certain next time something big happens everything will repeat itself.
I hadn´t even got to the opening credits of the first episode and I was already hooked. This show is amazing in every aspect. Brilliantly written and performed by an amazing group of actors who, from top to bottom, brought their A-game in each and every episode. The acting is at times so intense that I was literally on the edge of my seat. Dialogues and the sense of humor are great. The quality of the production is on the same level, or better, with big screen movies.
I am not American or live there but the message of "The Newsroom" concerning the news and the presentation of it does work everywhere else, too. Am I dissapointed they only made 25 episodes ? Well, yes and no. Because I´d rather have 25 hours of 100% the best they could do than having 100 hours of a show where 25 % of it was the best they could do.
After realising it´s been a good 15 years that I´ve watched TNG I decided it´s time again. Yes, the first season is far removed from what the show went on to become and I remember when they originally aired I rejected it. I couldn´t come to grips with the characters and some of the first scripts were awful. But everything turned around and it became one of the best shows (not only in the genre) ever made.
I still only own the DVD version, I´m not a huge friend of all that remastering. I´m sure it looks and sounds better but I like to experience it the way it was originally done.
Really loved The Pretender, still do. I think this was one of the best shows. Sadly they blew the chance to end the plot properly with the movies.
Although I am well aware of the level of quality the BBC/Attenborough docus present the footage never ceases to amaze me.
If you read my comments on episodes of Star Trek you'll find I've put many points of critique in. Why still give it a 10 ? Because for what it stands for. The kind of future it predicted. And for what it started. Althought that point no one could foreseen, or would have believed, they are still here in whatever form of show.
And a lot of critique stems from the fact I'm writing this over 50 years after it aired. I'm putting on a form of measurement that probably isn't justified. I've watched this show many times before, always enjoyed it, and still do. Even if I don't like certain aspects I still like this show as a whole. And there are episodes that I like today that I didn't before.
And that's one reacurring trademark of Star Trek for me - it changes everytime I watch it.
This is amazing ! Despite the fact you know it's CGI you can easily pretend this is real. Some of the scenes look so natural. And Attenborough narrating it just like the real thing completes the picture.
So, whether you like dinosaurs or nature in general - you should definately watch this..
It's difficult if your're younger and don't know the guests but the humor is still awesome. I can watch Muppets anytime and still get my laughs. A true classic.
I´m at the point in my personal Star Trek re-run where I reached the beginning of DS9. And althought I´ve seen the show twice already I´m tickling with anticipation of what awaits me. There aren´t many shows that have that effect on me.
One of my all time favs. Just watched it for the forth time. Sadly it never got the chance to develop its underlying plot. Had great music, too.
I'm a huge fan of rallying and the finnish drivers in particular for over 40 years now.
Not only is this the best docu about the Flying Finns I've ever watched, it is one of the best about rallying in general. Only wish it would have been longer.
If you want to win, hire a Finn.
Probably the biggest surprise of 2019. No, not probably - definitely ! I had no idea this was in the making but even if I had, I could not have expected this. Of course I do know the movie. But it has been so long ago that I don't remember anything but the fact it was a Jim Henson puppet fantasy movie. I didn't remember anything of the story. I chose not to re-watch it and instead delve right into the show which is absolutely fine to do. As I understand it the movie would be the end of the story anyway.
The production itself is amazing. And that even scratches the surface. The sets, costumes, the pupptets - the level of detail is crazy awesome. Watch this on as big a screen as possible. I am so thankful they didn't go all out CGI on this one as it wouldn't have worked like this does. The way this is shot makes you forget that you are watching puppets. This doesn't differ from any live action movie. The storytelling is immersive, it pulls you in and you are always eager to find out what will happen next. Characters are build up so that you can connect with them. You can invest in them, dislike or even hate them. There is a certain amount of darkness involved but also fun. All this is accompanied by a great musical score. This is LOTR territory as far as I'm concerned.
It is always difficult to label something as "must-see" because there are people who are simply not into this kind of stuff and that is absolutely fine. But I would really recommend to give it a try. As I mentioned this came out of nowhere for me and it went straight to the top for being the best show of 2019.
One of the best, if not THE best, action-criminal-spy-show of the late 70s.
Beautiful footage of a beautiful country. But it´s not only pictures, I actually learned something new.
