The movie that propably had the most impact on my life.
I was little over 10 at the time I saw it first. My dad brought it home on VHS. From the first second my eyes were glued to the screen. Immediately after it was over I rewound the tape and watched it again which up to today, close to 35 later, I haven´t done with any other movie. I recorded it on audio tape so I could listen to it, even wrote down the whole thing on paper (that was well before the internet, folks). We re-ennacted the scenes, I had memorized every line. I cannot recall how many times I`ve seen it since then.
I would give it 11 if possible.
This is how you do an action movie. Just the right amount of everything without being over the top. Spot on !
This is one of those movies you need an 11th heart in the rating.
The thing I like most about Ridleys movies is the fact that he uses CGI only when absolutely necassary and does as much practical shooting as possible. And he always tells a story. Just watched the extended cut which gives it a little more depth.
I can`t remember a bad movie from him but Gladiator sure is one of Ridleys masterpieces.
I have not given a movie a "10" in almost three years. This was epic and could become even more so if this gets continued.
The books made Tolkien immortal - the movies will do the same for Jackson.
I believe there will never be another movie as grand as these.
One of the best movies of 2018. What an emotional journey. And that is mainly thanks to Rami Malek how gives a remarkable performance. He brings Freddie Mercury back to life and he should get the Oscar for this.
Now, I wouldn't call myself a Queen fan. I like a lot of their music but only at certain times. But I clearly have a way better understanding of some of the lyrics and will hear the songs with a different view from now on.
There isn´t a movie around I have seen more often than this one. I can´t count it. Rocky Horror Show never gets old, never gets boring.
I still remember how skeptical I was when I went into the cinema back in 1998. I mean, you already knew what will happen, what story is there to tell, right ? Boy was I wrong.
Because I also remember how absolutely amazed I was, how the movie took me in, how I experienced the sinking of the ship, how I cried and how I still sat in my chair long after the credits were over.
And even after 25 years the movie still gets to me, invoking all the emotions I had the first time. It's a masterpiece in every regard. Eleven Oscars, but none for the actors. Which I still think is wrong. Even with all the technical stuff deservedly getting an award, you don't have a movie without the actors. They are the ones bringing in the emotion through their performances.
Technically this still stands it's grounds. Sure you see the CGI is dated but it's still very good. Even in HD which brings in so much more details of the sets and costumes.
It's a movie I can watch every couple of years and never feel bored.
Let me tell you a little of my experience watching this movie.
Empire was the first SW movie I actually saw in cinema. I vividly remember all the hype surrounding it. There was a promotion tour before where Darth Vader and some Stormtroopers visited stores and even signed autographs. Sounds funny today but I was about 11 and I loved that stuff. Of course they weren't the real actors but I wanted to be a Stormtrooper anyway. I think I still have the Darth Vader signature somewhere. (Meanwhile I have the ones of Prowse and Jones, too)
When the big reveal in the movie came the cinema was stunned. Even thought the movie premiered about half a year before in the States it was still possible to keep things under wraps with no internet. There were rumors spread by people who watched it but nothing solid. And it was hard to believe anyway. So there was real astonishment and fright upon the revelation. Don't you miss that ? Today there is hardly anything in a movie that is surprising and it's tough to avoid spoilers which can come from the most unexpected angles.
As an 11 year old I wasn't analyzing the movie, I simply loved and enjoyed every second of it. Even today I have no favorite among the original trillogy. I see them as a whole and they are close to my heart. Back then Empire solidified my love for Star Wars and I was very eager to know how it would continue.
How would they rescue Han ? What will Luke do now that he knew his father is the Evil personified ? There were many things to talk about and our imagination ran wild.
This concert, or better the album made from it, was what made me a U2 fan. I played it so many times until you could hear nothing but scratches.
I am not saying I loved every album they made, especially the later ones are not all my cup of tea. But I can always come back to this. They never sounded better then during this time.
Of all the people alive in the world today I'd like to meet, Adele would be on the top of that list. Just to say "Thanks you".
There isn't a superlative to describe her that hasn't been used before so I'm not even trying. It was cool to see those celebs kinda losing their marbles being in the presence of Adele.
I can't wait to see her perform live one day. Tried getting tickets last time but they were literally gone within 5 minutes.
My god, what a venue. And so fitting because she's the brightest star in the universe.
Her performance is, again, flawless. It's like she's never been away. I was a bit disappointed that this was a "Celebrities Only" event but she explained that and I totally get it.
I hope I'll get a ticket for her next tour, whenever that might be. It's a bucket list event for me for sure.
I've seen Dances with Wolves for the first time in cinema before it got all the accolades. I didn't knew much about it and wasn't even aware of the nominations. To put it frank, the main reason I went into it was it had the longest running time of all the movies. The most bang for the buck if you will.
I was completely blown away by the cinematography, the beautiful scenery and I was taken in by the story and deeply touched by the emotional impact. I didn't notice the three hours and I didn't mind at all having to read half of the dialogue. Everything falls together perfectly. This movie delivered on a level that very few movies did in the past, or do today. I consider this to be one of the greatest movies of all time. I am not giving it a definitive rank but it belongs in that category.
It still is an immensely powerful movie both in picture and in word. It is timeless, sadly I must add, in its topic. Althought this is about the Native Americans it works equally well in general terms. We all must learn to understand and accept each other for otherwise nothing will change.
The Next Generation what was ultimately made me a Star Trek fan but DS9 is my favorite of all the shows. And this documentary showed me again why that is the case. So many great memories that have come back.
Oh, and after seeing those small HD snippets I have to say we need - no, we want - we DEMAND the full show in HD. Sadly though I don't think it will ever happen.
Supplemental: It was already very emotional to see Aron Eisenberg who died recently. Adding to that was the fact the proposal for an eighth season had Nog killed.
Yesterday Rene Auberjonois passed away also. Very sad news.
The perfect sequel to Batman Begins it also sets up the stage for what is coming next.
Heath Ledger delivers a performance for the ages and brings a Joker to life unlike any we have seen before. His acting here lifts the movie to the next level. Aaron Eckahardt comes in as Harvey Dent, another really good casting decision. Rachel Dawes is portrayed now by Maggie Gyllenhall which kind of proofs my point that Katie Holmes was replaceable.
Everything here is right. A great story that is about characters, about people. Awesome production value - it really pays off to do as much pratical photography as possible thanks to Chris Nolan. I think even 10 years down the line this won't look dated. Amazing sound design and all packed with a soundtrack from one of the masters of his trade, Hans Zimmer.
Seriously, this is one of the best action-superhero movies ever done and I think it will stay on top for a very long time.
What is there to say about this movie that hasn`t been said before.
After watching The Hobbit I had to re-visit the LotR trilogy. In direct comparison you see that it is a couple of years older but it still looks stunning and is one of THE best movies ever. And even seeing it for the second time it is so powerful emotionally it gets me again.
Adele was one of the very, very few who caught my attention over the last couple years.
Awesome woman, awesome voice.
Wish I could have been there, great performance.
Let's not talk Ewoks or Special Editions. There's nothing that can be said or written that hasn't been done so before.
I loved Star Wars from the second I first watched it and that will never change. I made my peace with the prequels and can see what they brought to the whole despite the flaws they have.
This marked the first time I saw everything chronologically so far (incl. Clone Wars and Rebels) and some things just don't ad up.
F.e. how can Leia know anything about her mother ? Both children were taken away the minute they were born and Padme died right after giving birth. Bail Organa immediatly took Leia in. She should not be able to remember her birth mother.
And Obi-Wan was very reluctant to take on Anakin, let alone train him. He only did so because of a promise he made to the dying Qui-Gon.
You can find many more little discrepancies and this is not meant to be criticism of any kind. In any case in 1983 all this didn't apply. It just shows that it isn't easy to put a prequel story to an existing story without cutting some corners.
But like I said - I love Star Wars. I can easily live with all those things mentioned above.
Now, reluctantly I have to admit, I move on to the sequells.
First of all I want to get something out of my system. A lot of people are criticising war-movies, especially those about WWII, for not beeing realistic or directors for being overly brutal when filming battle scenes.
First, I am pretty sure none of us has been there, at the second WW that is, so what do we know and who are we to judge ? War was/is brutal and everyone who has knowledge about the war in the Pacific should know that those were the most brutal fights of the war.
Secondly, it´s a movie for heavens sake. Those kind of things are to be expected. Even the argument that you don´t see such brutally in documentarys doesn´t fly. Althought there were cameramen at the battlefields I doubt they always were in the middle of the action during the battles. So no one, except those who have really been there know how brutal it was. And the glorification of the "good old boys" is to expected just the same. Or does anyone think a Japanese war movie does this different? Everyone who can´t except this should better avoid these kind of movies.
Third, the war movies that were made in the late 40s to, say, the 60s aren´t known for their accuracy when it comes to depicting WWII. Yet some of them are considered classics of cinema. Granted, they weren´t as brutal as the movies today but I would attribute that to the times we live in. People want to see it, it could be as simple as that. Almost all of Hollywood Greats played parts in such movies. Lets wait half a century and see how a movie like Hacksaw ridge will be considered then.
So, now that that is said I am really surprised this movie only got two technical Oscars and mostly got overlooked by all for Best Actor, Director, Movie. I´m not saying the movie should have won everything, after all a nomination is a recognition. This is an intense movie with a gripping story that really got to me. I didn´t know about Doss before, at least I can´t remember, but his is a remarkable story. One you almost think can´t be real and could only be coming out of Hollywood.
So far it was the best movie I´ve seen this year and that is why I´m giving it a 10.
No, it´s not the best I´ve ever seen but one of the few that really moved me and left me emotionally exhausted and that is why I´m giving it a 10.
Everyone is entiteled to his own opionion, This is mine.
Think you know everything about Star Trek ? That you have seen everything there is to see ? You might reconsider.
Over the decades I have seen and read a ton about Trek but I was amazed about the new material. It´s not hours of new footage on this but the stuff that is there, deleted/additional scenes and behind the scenes stuff is totally worth watching this.
Thank you for finally giving the ones a voice in that discussion to whom it concerns the most - the players.
I am pro-fights. I don´t miss them when there wasn´t one in a game but I fear the game would be much worse if fighting is banned.
Another memorable performance from Adele.
I so enjoy watching her not only because of the great music but because of the emotions she displays on stage which are reflected towards the audience and shared together. It´s rare today to have someone so successfull staying so natural.
Adele, her music, touches me on such an emotional level as hardly anyone ever has. She is an amazing person. It´s like the world stops when she is singing.
If you are, like me, a fan of Gary`s hard stuff than this will bring you back. It will simply blow you away. Amazing, memorable performance. Not just because this was the last Live recording before he passed away. He even played three new songs that where supposed to be on a new album he was working on.
In my opinion he is still one of the best guitarists ever because of the way he played, He could make it talk to you like few others and he shows it here.
So turn up your gear because the sound is awesome. Enjoy.
RIP Gary, we miss you.
I´ve seen Jurassic Park a couple times over the years and I´m always amazed how well this stands up to to later movies. This never looked old, not 10 years after, not 20 years after it was made.
Great movie !
You can watch a movie like this anytime because it doesn`t need CGI and SFX, it tells a stroy. And one that in todays society might be more true than in the 90s.
It doesn`t take much to put one over the hill.
I was really looking forward to this and wasn't dissapointed.
A great movie about two personalities who couldn't be more different and yet so much alike.
Whenever you´ve had a bad day try a Muppet movie. Works for me every time.
Now this has everything I want from a Batman movie! Love the animation style and the dark atmosphere.
Very much looking forward to part two.
