"Nice stopwatch." "You want one, they're italian."
I am a car nut. I follow motorsports since the early 1980s up to today and I love the history of it. So this one was highly anticipated. And I was not dissapointed.
The movie is great. I'm sure they added or altered some things like they allways do but the basic story is right. This was one of the greatest moments in motorsports. The dawn of a new era. The racing footage is great and I was surprised to find out that it was all done practical because I expected a lot of it to be CG. However I don't think it depicts the excitement of racing like Le Mans or even Grand Prix did. I was much more immersed in those. Matt Damon was allright but I was awestruck by Christian Bale's performance. Bernthal seemed like an odd choice to play Iacocca because it is so far away from The Punisher, which is imprinted on my mind, but it works.
What can I say ? You like motorsports watch it. But this is also about friends & friendship. About facing impossible odds to accomplish your goals. And it tells the story not too clichéd. After all, this is how it went down. If there are clichès then they were probably born here.
Starts out interesting with Bond going on a personal vendetta but it hits a wall the moment he meets the woman pilot. It becomes increasingly boring after that with bland and boring characters througout and that includes the women. The character of Sanchez seems to be written with Davi in mind but he is unfortunately as dull as the rest. The finale is explosive (literally) but it can't save the movie as a whole. Pretty generic and you could easily replace Bond with a Joe Smith. Giving "Q" a bit more to do than usual and a very young Benicio del Toro are some saving grace but that's ultimately not why I watch the movie.
I guess I´m 30 years too old for this because all this gangsta behavior really annoyed me. Those brain-dead characters and all this crap talk destroyed the whole idea of the movie for me which is a shame because technically this was really good.
Furthermore I think that was Jackmann´s worst role and Weaver´s was rather insignificant. So I conclude they were casted to gain interest for the US market.
So I decided to start the Saga once more, this time in chronological order. For sure it isn't the best of them all but at the same time it's not completely awful and/or unwatchable. When I saw it initially at the movies I wasn't negativ about it at all. I was more thrilled about getting a new trilogy going. Yes, Jar Jar is annoying and little Anni is a smartass brat. I remember back in 1999 I had trouble believing that from this would come Darth Vader. To which I also attribute the fact that Jake Lloyd just couldn't pull it off. Most of the acting was rather pale and only Liam Neeson did stand out a bit. Would have liked to see more Qui-Gon.
Back to the movie. The story as a whole is not bad but the story telling is. There are important parts here that will impact the story moving forward but you don't feel they are important. In fact if you don't know what to look for you might miss it. There seems to be no urgency in all of this. In hindsight I'd say you could start with Ep.II and still get the meaning of it all. It get's a little better once they reach Coruscant and later go back to Naboo. And of course we get the epic battle between Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan which is the reason it still get's a "7" from me.
A few words about the production side. In 1999 this was state of the art. It was actually ahead of it's time which is why some scenes still look great. When it comes to the Gungans f.e. you see the steps that have been made since then. And some of the green-screen work looks just like that. And it becomes more apparent in 4k. Overall the movie looks great in UHD, I saw many details I had missed before, and I am sure they smoothed some things out. And you would be surprised how many things aren't CG but actually model building.
It's not the best introduction to Star Wars if you've never have seen it. That would still be A New Hope. And it will always be. But as I said earlier, it's not unwatchable.
I enjoy those movies much more today because they focus on story and acting and not on CGI and SFX.
Yes, the conspiracy at the base of this movie feels rather small considering what is happening in the world now. But keep in mind when this was written.
Althought I must admit I was thinking about a certain President a lot while watching this now.
This is neither good or bad - it's just boring. I don't even know how to rate it. It may be interesting if you've seen the movie, which finally got made in 2018. Otherwise you can skip this.
Much better than the first one. I can't point on single thing out that I like better. It's just that the whole movie felt like something carved from a solid billet instead of put together from several pieces. I am sure the experience from the first helped as much as the fact we didn't have to introduce every character. The additional runtime helps adding depth and detail and the climax really felt dramatic.
It's a lot of things all over that makes this a step up from X1.
This movie is great on many levels. First it works as a really good sci-fi/action movie. But there is also a message, intentional or not, and it raises questions. But it's not being put on the foreground. Yet you clearly see the references. And it still works today.
The mix of documentary and cinematic style adds a certain level of realism, as much as this is possible with an alien story, but you are much more drawn into it because of that. The story itself is interesting. You don't have aliens coming to conquer or destroy mankind. They are pretty much a sorry bunch with little hope of existence. I like that angle.
Putting this not into the hollywood realm and not placing it in America also just adds to the positive attributes this whole movie has.
I am on the fence if I would want a sequel to be honest. If that would mean it gets the hollywood treatment I'd refuse. I mean - look at the Terminator franchise for a reference.
In any case, after re-watching this movie I raise my rating from "8" to "9" because I really think it is that good. Unfortunately, from where I stand, Blomkamp hasn't even come close to repeating with any of his other movies following District 9.
Let's not talk Ewoks or Special Editions. There's nothing that can be said or written that hasn't been done so before.
I loved Star Wars from the second I first watched it and that will never change. I made my peace with the prequels and can see what they brought to the whole despite the flaws they have.
This marked the first time I saw everything chronologically so far (incl. Clone Wars and Rebels) and some things just don't ad up.
F.e. how can Leia know anything about her mother ? Both children were taken away the minute they were born and Padme died right after giving birth. Bail Organa immediatly took Leia in. She should not be able to remember her birth mother.
And Obi-Wan was very reluctant to take on Anakin, let alone train him. He only did so because of a promise he made to the dying Qui-Gon.
You can find many more little discrepancies and this is not meant to be criticism of any kind. In any case in 1983 all this didn't apply. It just shows that it isn't easy to put a prequel story to an existing story without cutting some corners.
But like I said - I love Star Wars. I can easily live with all those things mentioned above.
Now, reluctantly I have to admit, I move on to the sequells.
I've been an Eastwood fan for basically my entire movie watching life. Ever since I've saw him in one of the Dollar western. If he's playing or directing - it's a reason for me to watch it. However his last directing credits were literally hit and miss the last youple of years.
Amerian Sniper (miss), Sully (hit), 15:17 to Paris (miss), The Mule (hit). And now Richard Jewell is somewhere in between but leaning more towards missing, again, for different reasons.
I knew nothing about the person or how he's been treated at the time. So I had really no idea what was going to happen in this movie. While I'm not surprised at how the story unfolds I have to say that Eastwood did not manage to invoke real sympathy for the man in me. The whole thing pretty much plays like you would expect it to. Jewell is the hero.
After I watched the movie I read about the controversy surrounding the portrayal of Kathy Scruggs. I know movies are taking artistic freedoms when it comes to the portrayal of characters but I think they went below the line here. Especially considering that she is dead. That made me read up a little more. I don't want to excuse what has been done to Jewell by the FBI and the media, and how terrible it must have been for him. But I found it interesting that the movie neglected to mention that the Attorney General formally apologized and that Jewell got a 500.000 $ settlement from NBC. Others settled, too, but I don't know for what.
I think it is really important to tell stories like this. But adding or leaving stuff out are intentional decisions on part of the writer and/or director and I really ask myself: why ? If you make a movie based on a real event, stick to the fact. Don't add or leave things out. Because if you do I really question your motive and your agenda.
Great animation and story but I think it's a bit to many characters involved. If those villains are downgraded to extras what's the point in having them anyway ?
There are hours upon hours to watch about the space program in general and Apollo 11. Although I've watched it all repeatedly I never grow tired of it. Especially during the last days, nearing the 50th anniversary, many documentaries were shown. Didn't particulary like this one for one reason.
I am not a huge fan of re-enactment. I prefer original footage. I understand its necessity at times but more often than not it feels like a low-budget movie. At least, if you do it, use the actors voices instead of overdubbing the fake characters with the real voices. For someone like me, who knows their faces and voices it is very disturbing and disjointing. And mixing original footage with re-enected scenes makes it worse.
And the inserts are unnecessary dramatic at times. It's OK to point out the critical stages of the mission but adding lines like "if this (or that) doesn't work, the mission is over" is kind of useless.
It's my personal opinion but watch "Apollo 11" instead.

I watched Unbreakable a long time ago and I didn't watch Split (which I do regret now). So it took me a while before the pieces of this movie fell together for me. But when they did it was amazing. I was really convinced "They" had won and it all felt rather unsatisfying before things turned around.
A very well made movie that is subtle and not blatantly action ridden. McAvoy's performance is ten out of ten alone. You could watch this stand-alone but it probably is better if you watch all three in succession.
Ever since the first Predator with Arnie I'm waiting for a worthy successor. This one ain't it either. I was tempted to quit watching instead I choose to let it play along. Man, this is awful.
Bunch of stupid morons that are supposed to be funny, but aren't. I am not sure who's worse - those "soldiers" or that guy Traeger with his I-am-a-cool-mothaf*** vibe.
Dialogue like: can you ask the kid to turn down that psychosis. One stupid one-liner amongst many.
Plot holes, f.e. the guy swallows that cloaking device and seemingly never went to the toilet after that. Whole script is no good.
CGI isn't good either. Apperently 88m $ (according to imdb) isn't enough nowadays. Action scenes have lots of cool moments, if you're an adolescent that is. You clearly can identify the target audience by the number of times the f-word is used.
Whole movie is just a waste of time and money. But, of course, at the end we get a hint for the next movie with a Predator suit that is a cross between Iron Man and Optimus Prime. I really hope someone has the good sense to stop this from happening.
Yes, the car chase is what sets this movie apart from similar ones. Althought I remembered it to be longer. But the rest of the movie isn't bad either. It's a thriller in the truest sense of the word with convincing portrayals from, both, McQueen and Vaughn alike.
If you made a movie that is making $ 544k domestic and a little over $ 1m worldwide it tells you something. There wasn´t much interest in the first place (no, honestly how many movie goers are that? 100-110k maybe?) Anyway, if you haven´t seen it I don´t think you´d missed out.
Yes, the story is - or rather could have been - interesting. I think it is to superfical. You have the innocent little girl that one day sees the monk burning himself and suddenly she went haywire and becomes anti-everything. From there on the story jumps through the years with little explanations or deeper investigation. It´s the father not wanting to give up on his daughter and the mother trying to move on. You could have easily jumped from Merry´s disapearance to the day her father found her because all what happened in between isn´t really meaningful. I don´t blame McGregors directing, I think he did a good job and since he didn´t wrote the script you can´t lay blame on him for that. I haven´t read the book, maybe it isn´t even a bad adaptation. Maybe the origin is as sketchy.
All the actors did a very good job and it is what keeps this movie above water so that you get through it. But that is just it, you get through it and after the end you just forget. If this was supposed to be a critical lock into that time in history it failed.
The problem I usually have with the Marvel movies is that while they where something special when they started they´ve become a common thing in cinema today. So I´m not as thrilled today with every new one coming out, I watch them, they were quite average to me lately. I found this to be quite entertaining though. Story was good, I like that we see more of where the x-men came from and how they got together. Visually it is good too. As I said, it´s a good and entertaining movie.
Movie is OK. The story is lacking a, bit though. I thought it odd that she went over to France to find her love and after finding out what happened to him she soon falls in love with another one. That´s to convenient story writing.
Interesting how there seem to be more negative reviews here than in the ones before whereas I think this was the best one of the series. Or maybe I´m just getting used to it.
Anyway, I´ve critizised the Abramsverse a lot but this one was a small step in the right direction. I would attribute this largely to the fact that Abrams isn´t involved directly in this movie. Yes, it is still more like blockbuster cinema but there is improvement. We finally get rid of that annoying lensflare and this is something new not just a twisted old story (althought the crash of the saucer on the planet.....nah, it´s allright.) .
Gone is the sometimes silly behavior and unnessessary stupid humor. There is one part of the movie I didn´t like and that was the part where to music kills the bees that is the kind of > let us do something cool < factor I didn´t like in the first two movies but the rest was really solid. Still not comparable with the old, and it never will be, but for now enough to convince me to give the next one a try.
As I mentioned before - even if those new trek franchise would do nothing for me it generated interest and, more important, revenue that led to another tv show. Here´s hoping that it will do well.
First off, great movie ! Not that overdrawn Hollywood stuff. Much more realistic. Really pulled me in and the fighting felt very tense.
As for the story I have to admit I hadn't known it before. Doesn't surprise me one bit though. But it's good to see that those things come to light at last and the soldiers get the recognition they deserve. One of the sad truth of life. Too many things have happened, and are still happening, we don't know about.
Fu**ing politicians always come out on top. Always have been, Always will be.
Not quite sure where to put this. If you span a period of 25 years in a two hour movie there are supposed to be gaps in the story. But it is tough to put events into a timeframe if you don't know much about the history.
I like period dramas and I am a huge fan of Saoirse who played well. As did Margot. They both carry the movie a lot. The oscar nominations are also well earned. But that's just it. It looks pretty but it's lacking in storytelling. The material would have been better for a mini series. I am not dissapointed nor do I regret watching this. I think a "7" is an honest rating. It takes into consideration the effort made to produce this movie.
Two of my favorite comedians. I've always been a huge Steve Martin fan but Martin Short ruled this show. But I do think this was shortened because there was very little of Steve.
Historically this is interesting but it is easy to look back in time and pass judgement.
I will probably get a lot of heat for this comment but there was no great conspiracy to prevent women to go into space. Those were different times, a different society. It's not right or wrong, it's history. The hostile comments against men of the times are misplaced. Mercury 13 wasn't a NASA programm. And the argument that it would have been different had they send women, that women are better and what it would have ment is the other side of the same coin.
It's a typical normal-man-gets-into-impossibe-situation thriller that follows the blueprint for the genre. If that is what you're looking for than that is what you'll get. As long as you don't expect the world out of it you'll be fine.
Oh, and Liam is actually close to being 66 and if you ask me it doesn't show. I'll hope he does some more movies.
Forgive me but I have to do it. The thing that is fundamentaly wrong with Abrams` Trek is it´s all about > being cool. Everything in the movies has to stand up to this mantra. Is it cool to hide a Starship inside an ocean on a planet ? Yes. Is it Star Trek. No, it´s not Newsflash Mr. Abrams: Star Trek has made billions of fans all over the world for half a century without being cool. It doesn´t need to be. It´s not Marvel.
Furthermore, they create a new timeline so that they can do something new but all they are really doing is leeching of ideas from the original and simply twisting the plots in them around. That is not my idea of doing something new.
Again way to much lens flare (its JJ Abrams). Again great CGI (It´s ILM).
If it wouldn´t be calling itself a Star Trek movie I actually would give it a higher rating. But I can´t. It is better then the first but only slightly. I can´t see past the fact what they did (are doing) to the characters. This is in essence Star Trek for the Marvel generation.
So, in the end Strobel couldn´t disprove the basis for the christian faith therefore he drops everything, accepts it as fact, and converts. I wouldn´t go as far as saying this story is propaganda but it surely left me with an aftertaste. Yes, I am an atheist but I have no problem with believers. To each his own. But I have never in my life tried to convince someone who believes that he is wrong.
The movie itself was OK, that is it is well made. The side story with the innocent cop shooter could have been another movie itself. Vogel did a good job while the others had not many screen time to shine.
Don´t know the first one so I can´t compare. The movie lives from it´s unique style and the performance of the cast. If anyone would have made this a normal movie with the same story it is likely nobody would have cared.
This is the second time I saw this. I remembered this as being a realy good movie. Seeing it today, opposed to 10 years ago, I think if you take away Denzels performance this is a decent but not awesome piece.
The movie that propably had the most impact on my life.
I was little over 10 at the time I saw it first. My dad brought it home on VHS. From the first second my eyes were glued to the screen. Immediately after it was over I rewound the tape and watched it again which up to today, close to 35 later, I haven´t done with any other movie. I recorded it on audio tape so I could listen to it, even wrote down the whole thing on paper (that was well before the internet, folks). We re-ennacted the scenes, I had memorized every line. I cannot recall how many times I`ve seen it since then.
I would give it 11 if possible.
Reboot this as much as you want Maguire was the best Spider-Man.
