I was absolutely loving the episode, until Ty — a child — casually walked out of the Orville, no authorization required, he literally just opened the door and left. That broke the episode, for me, even more so when you consider that was a crucial plot element for the big, shocking twist to be revealed. I can't believe Brannon Braga, a Star Trek: TNG veteran, wrote something as atrocious as that.
Everything else about this episode was utterly excellent and this would have been a sci-fi masterpiece, if it all didn't depend on that one badly written scene.

@misnomer OK, I gave you that bad writing part. But if the second part can deliver it would be a small prize to pay. And I am not sure how else they could have gotten to the point in the story. And you could make the argument the Kaylons might not have bothered as they seem to be having no problem with armed Union officers walking around either. But as I said, i'll give you that. Could have been more inventive.

@finfan I honestly loved all of the episode EXCEPT for that very, very annoying and amateurish scene. It's a freaking child leaving a freaking starship on his own, without any barriers in his way. But, like you pointed out, I'm also not sure how else they could have got to that point in the story. I'm guessing neither did Brannon Braga, hence the appalling scene. Here's hoping the conclusion will blow us away and, as such, maybe even make this particular scene nothing more than a nuisance.

@misnomer Something else came to to mind since I compared the Kaylons to the Borg anyway. The Borg didn't care for the Enterprise crew walking around as the didn't saw them as a threat. So there is that. And you could make the point that since the Orville thought the were amongst friendlies there was no need to post guards at the airlock.

@finfan that's not the issue I have with that scene. There's no need for guards at the door and it's understandable to have a human running around between the Kaylons, peacefully. My problem is that a child was able to leave a starship unsupervised. It's like you're at home with your little kid and he decides to go out all alone and he just opens the door and leaves. Does this sound reasonable to you? Now imagine doing that on an unknown planet! I would expect Ty to try opening the door and not having clearance for that.

@misnomer Yes, the clearance part is what it comes down to. He entered a code he shouldn't have. I realised that after submitting the post. As for just opening the door and leaving: I'll must admit my little son really did this once. Luckily we were living in a quite area.

@finfan ah! You've experienced what I mean, personally. So you must realise it's something to worry about (and I'm glad no one got hurt in your little one's escapade). Not sure where Ty got that code from and how, but it really shouldn't come down to simply input a code to leave a starship. Specially if you're a little kid. But I admit I'm getting picky, there. Still, it's a badly and lazy written scene.

@misnomer It was something to worry about but at the same time something that happens you don't think about until it does. And about getting picky: please continue to be. Otherwise we would have nothing to discuss.

That made me chuckle, eheh! I'm not usually that picky, I actually don't notice a lot of stuff other people do in movies and TV shows. But this scene really got on my nerves, particularly because I was loving the episode and it was hard for me to see it being tainted like that, with an important but very badly written scene.

Again, here's hoping the conclusion this week will deliver more good stuff and no awkward stuff like this one scene.

@misnomer My very first reaction to that was, "That should raise an alarm somewhere in the computer system…"

Like, if someone launches an unscheduled shuttle, the Bridge is gonna get an alert. Should be the same for any exterior hatches opening that aren't planned (like they did when the Kaylon boarded, later).

Can probably hand-wave all this away as Ty being way smarter than we suspect at this point, e.g. he managed to steal a high-level authorization code that suppresses alerts, but that's not especially likely. Occam's Razor says this was just lazy writing.

@dgw um glad you noticed it, too. As for Ty being super smart, that would just be shallow character development, as there haven't been any previous indicators of him being smarter above the average of his age. I have to agree, it was just lazy writing, that was all there was to it. The rest of the episode was pretty good, though.

@misnomer Yeah you are right. A dopey scene, but the computer virus upload to the alien ship on the movie Independence Day gets my vote as one of the dopiest moments in cinema - ever. Lol.
