If you are constantly wondering about how much hairspray went into the hairdo of Angelique Pettyjohn you hardly can't call this episode gripping.
I guess a serious episode about slavery didn't get past studio censors back then. On the other hand we get, what I would describe as, an attempted rape of Uhura. This episode turns into yet another one of Kirks brief romances with a character we (and he) will never see again. Where we can see him bare chested and giving a grand speech. Butwithout much substance there is little weight to the morale.
