Netflix's Bright, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, is a big-budget film set in a modern-day Los Angeles where society is a mix of elves, humans, and orcs. The story follows LAPD officer Daryl Ward, who is partnered with Nick Jakoby, the first orc cop. The two stumble across an ancient magic wand, which only a 'bright' can handle, and must fend off a group of dark elves who are after it. The movie is criticized for its poor dialogue, basic naming conventions, and lack of focus on the social commentaries it tries to make. Joel Edgerton gives the best performance and his character is the only one that receives any depth. The music, visuals and script all fail to impress. Though the idea of the movie is good, it fails to build on its potential.
This is one of those films that I actually think critics were way too harsh on. Reviews made me go into this expecting something terrible but I was pleasantly satisfied.
I thought the movie's premise was pretty interesting, the thought of orcs and elves living modern day lives and having regular jobs in this movie fascinated me and this is what made it a fun watch for me. It actually felt like watching a random one-shot comic as a movie. Joel Edgerton did a phenomenal job and his character was the most interesting one in my opinion. The action in the film was very enjoyable, and it had some pretty good suspenseful moments.
That being said, I can see why some folks do not like this movie, I found a good chunk of the dialogue between the main duo to be rather awkward, like SW prequel trilogy awkward and I must admit some of the humor was a bit hit or miss. Despite the fact that I loved the premise of it I must also admit that it could have focused way more on world building by showing off a whole lot more different species than what we actually focused on or giving us a bit more on the setting's backstory.
Nowhere near perfect but I still think it's worth a watch, it's a pretty standard buddy cop film in my opinion.
'Bright' was pretty bad. Not surprise to say that when you look at who directed and wrote it. Whoever says this is an important movie due to it's obvious message on racism, needs to shut up. The film literally treats itself as ground breaking and a brave look on today society.
'Alien Nation' did it better.
Why does this movie look so ugly? It's got the same color filter as 'Suicide Squad', which is another David Ayer movie. And also 'Son of Saul', a holocaust film. So your telling me this and 'Suicide Squad' has the same color filter of a holocaust movie. Before you say anything, no it doesn't add to the experience, just makes it more dull to watch.
I'll just come out and say it - I've never liked Max Landis. I don't know the guy personally, but he always comes across as arrogant and self-centred. Any movie Landis was involved in, I usually don't like. 'Chronicle' wasn't too bad, but that was just one movie. I'm not trying to hate on him for the shake of hating, he just hasn't done anything to change my mind. He's not a very good writer. Every line of dialogue is this movie was absolutely awful that maybe re-writes isn't so bad for Landis.
Will Smith is a great actor, but isn't great of picking movie roles. I mean, he turned down 'The Matrix' and 'Django Unchained', to instead star in 'After Earth' and 'Collateral Beauty'. I hope Smith makes a come back. To be fair, even with the terrible or Oscar bait movies, I can't say he's bad in them. Same thing can be said about Joel Edgerton.
Overall rating: "It was made for the FANS, NOT the CRITICS!”
A very dull movie for one involving magic...
It was very boring until the last 20 minutes and it kept introducing useless characters, like what's up with the elf detective that had been hunting Leilah for years? Are they rivals/archenemies? Is Leilah a famous criminal in the Elf community? Who knows, the film sure does not! And who was the hobo guy that knew everything fom the beginning of the movie? What happened to him and why did he know so much? What is the Shield of Light and how does it work? Who are the Inferni? Who the hell is the Darklord??
This movie didn't answer ANY of these questions, it was just "hey, follow these two ratially different cops in a MAGICAL ADVENTURE that is actually just a shooting flick". And why is Will Smith's character so skeptical about magic? I understand that as a human you don't see magic exactly everyday... oh except THAT YOU DO because you live in a world populated by magical creatures and that was once ruled by a DARKLORD WITH MAGIC WANDS!
And also, why would something like Shrek exist in a movie where fantastic creatures are real?? Every fantasy movie, or the fantasy genre itself, should be considered history in this universe!

Bright was a movie i looked forward to because it had an interesting concept, but unfortunately the concept failed to shine through due to a pretty awful script and a lot of awkward cinematography. Most of the dialogue was so bland and cringey, it felt like it was written by someone who has little to no experience in writing dialogue. And the cinematography was all over the place with pointless slow mo shots, quick zooms and boring wide shots.
The fantasy elements also felt half-assed and rushed. They could've done a lot more to make the viewer believe that this was a world where magical creatures evolved alongside humans. Something as simple as giving the police magical weapons of their own or having shops and businesses that pander to certain species could've been cool, but all we get are the Orcs being anti-social thugs and all Elves being rich while everything else is the exact same as real life. Other species are mentioned but never shown.
There was even a ridiculous shot in the film where out of nowhere the silhouette of a dragon is seen flying across the sky in the distance, a perfect representation of how distant this movie was from reaching its true potential.
The main Orc (played by Joel Edgerton) was a very good character though and his story arc was satisfying. Will Smith was good at....being Will Smith, but his character had no development and felt very one dimensional and depressing. At multiple times in the movie he was ready to commit suicide for no reason despite having a wife and kids, and in the end he still doesn't accept Joel Edgerton's character as a friend and basically remains a racist towards Orcs.
Bright is a very forgettable movie but i hope it's concept is picked up by a better director in the future and made into a better film or television series.
