As someone who is generally not a fan of summer blockbusters the only thing I have to say about this movie is.... wow. Just wow. They absolutely nailed this one. I think the most impressive part about what they did is the nostalgia side of the movie. While watching this movie I thought a lot about The Force Awakens. In that movie it felt like we were sluggishly being dragged through a re-make of Return of the Jedi. As Maverick played out we were kind of laughing about all of the checkboxes that were being checked as the movie when on: singing in the bar, beach scene, emergency situation developing overseas, etc. There difference between this movie and other movies like The Force Awakens is that it didn't beat you over the head with the nostalgia. It all felt very authentic, especially when the movie did zag a little bit in the last twenty minutes. And most importantly, the movie is a TON of fun.

Top Gun: Maverick was a similar surprise for me as Mad Max: Fury Road. I went into the film without particularly high expectations, but with good general ratings in mind and couldn't stop grinning.
Such brilliant shots, that familiar and driving music, that connection to the first film and yet that uniqueness. This tension, this incredible action. Much like Terminator 2, Top Gun: Maverick is for me a sequel that outdoes the first film in more ways than one.
And as a bonus: Even my wife, who is very picky about movies, was heavily into the film.
After months of seeing nothing but praise for this (positive consensus is a rarity these divisive days) my expectations were through the roof. And they were SURPASSED!
Absolutely loved this movie. Great wink to the past and not needed for the new generation to have watched the original one to fully understand the movie. Also nice to see a proper movie without all the over the top woke shit that has seemingly become the new 'standard'.
One of the best movie I've seen in a long time!
Good work!
I had no idea a good, scratch that… great Top Gun could ever be made but I was wrong. A good story with tense action, emotions and amazing cinematography with some of the coolest shots I’ve ever seen. I also think this is Tom Cruises best performance to date. Hats of to the director for not making it cheesy.
Entertaining movie, message dumb as usual, that's it.
action scenes are so well done! Has all the stuff to make it an entertainer ... it is a very good film but I still feel it is way too overhyped. I can watch it again though.. and Tom Cruise how does this guy look that young at 60??!!
Wow absolutely loved it definitely held up to all the hype
:heart:x9
WOW!! A perfect summer blockbuster popcorn movie! I've missed movies like this.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
As a 90's kid born in 1986 this movie brought up a lot of youth sentiment. The movie embraces the film making of earlier days and does it perfectly. The old and new castmembers blend in really well together. Kilmer's scene really brought tears to my eyes.
A significant improvement from the first! You really feel like you're in the cockpit with them and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The third act is absolutely wild. I wish I had gone to see this on the big screen from what i've heard it's a completely different experience.
The story has all the elements and tropes that get comfortable most generations, but especially the target one (i.e. people who were young-ish in the 80s and are grumpy about today's youth and eccentricities): superhumanly human hero; bad**s love interest; the young and pawing young gun; his rival (off the chart arrogant-HS-bully feel); camraderie; the younger love interest (not damsel in distress tho, clearly); the strict superiors not trusting Maverick but coming to respect and admire him for his skills; a general bad enemy without any real world references so to not preclude any market or irate any sympatizer; giant US flags, smaller US flags, flags; young heroes thinking they're the very best (as stated 25 times by themselves to make it clear to even the slowest viewers) but soon understanding and being told that they are, in fact, not yet; toothpicks in the mouth; competition between the new pilots, but also friendship when having to overcome the odds; A seemingly impossible mission; mutual respect earned and manly hugs and shoulder pats to express it; grand speeches; grand gestures to challenge authority, but still following every order that doesn't have moral strings attached; 80s vibe soundtrack; unnecessary selfie when Rooster is doing pushups, just to remind old folks that those are indeed millenials and that's how you recognize'em (no selfie in the cockpit tho, I'm a little disappointed); Jason Mendoza very much alive and with a surprising career choice; motorbikes; boats; I wonder if the bully trope has an actual utility to help improve others in highly competitive environments, or if they just make atmosphere grow heavy; That Iceman reunion is indeed emotional, and there's an unexpected depth given by the silence (filmmakers everywhere, take note); Bonding beach moments (no more volley tho); Many "Come on"; Silent nods; 3rd person self talking; The secondary-couple-of-pilots-which-I'm-guessing-won't-have-such-a-smooth-run-in-the-mission; Nope, well done not falling into stereotypes, love it; Exciting and unexpected final adventure;
That said, cinematography is greatly crafted and without that fake-ish CGI texture which ruins most of current action movies lately (not Cruise's ones tho, to his credit), action scenes are thrilling, plane fights beautifully choreographed, Tom Cruise has always no problem in carrying an action flick on his shoulders, the emotional moments are well calibrated and work on their own even without the nostalgia factor.
Whilst the first 55 mins are just about nostalgia, from that on the movie gets on its legs and finds an identity separated from the original ( with a weird deja vu sensation from A New Hope, regarding the details of the mission ). Even if the first part seems out of time, they managed to keep the spirit yet adapting it to the present action pace.
It's a little bit dumb and very Manichaean but it is also a very well made action blockbuster.
Better than the first Top Gun. Even though it's still empty in story-vise, visually it looks stunning, and it's one of those movies that must be experienced in 4K.
Totally killing it. I'm glad we have such a remarkable sequel of the story.
Nice and legendary at the same time.
Absolutely spot-on sequel.
There's really nothing bad to say about this film. It hits every bit of fan service without being gratuitous and the story beats are pretty much perfect.
It hits the mid-point and everything is going wrong... and without spoiling things, Mav rescues the situation and it all plays out awesomely.
Into the final act... which again is almost perfect. It stretches a little with one attempt at fan service (those who've seen it will know what I mean), but at this point I didn't care. I was just enjoying the thrill ride.
I'm sure there's an element of rose-tinted glasses here. So many films have been disastrously bad in the last few years. This one represents a major return to form.
Thankfully the money it's raked in is demonstrating that real film-making is still needed. It's been an enormous hit. It should be pretty embarrassing that a return to a style of film from 30+ years ago was needed to show filmmakers the way forward. The money men are watching... get back to crowed pleasing.
Make films that people want to watch. Not full of politics you want to preach.
This flying scenes are some of the most beautiful action scenes I haver seen in a movie. Mad at myself now that I missed this at the big screen.
A truly superb sequel that goes above and beyond the original while still retaining everything that made it great. Just finished my second watch and my palms still got sweaty upon the approach of the mission. High octane but still heartfelt with only a sprinkling of cheese, Maverick is THE summer popcorn action movie of the last decade. Awesome film.
It's one of those very few sequels that surpasses the original. Meticulously planned, thoughtfully written, tastefully and elegantly executed. This here is what movies should be like!
Missing a tiny bit of magic of the original but still an amazing fun ride..I didn't get to watch the 1st one in theaters and I am glad I didnt make that same mistake this time
Throughly surprised. What should have been a disaster, is a great reminder of why the cinema is still an experience that needs to exist.
Can’t wait for the blu-ray release. So much fun
Since the script missed present day social issues, some people didn't believe that a movie like this was released in 2022.
I couldn't believe it either, this movie was awesome.
The movie is all about closing loops. Plot-wise, if you don't poke too much, it holds up. Catch it on the big screen as the flight sequences are worth it.
Sensational film, beautiful visual world, It absolutely surpasses the previous part. They're good actors. Good movie! I can only recommend it to everyone!
traded the 80’s flair and (some) homoeroticism for miles teller and the coolest, most heart-racing action sequence I’ve ever seen
I’ll take it.
Entertaining movie but everyone seem to overlook that the POS destroy a billion dollars phototype plane and the best top gun off all time are pretty much the same age.
Well done Mr. Cruise, well done. Hope we can see more movies follow the lead of this not CG film…hint hint wink wink I’m talking to you Michael Bay.
In 2022 things should feel and look real not cheap and computer made crap
I am in shock. How did they make a movie about fighter planes amazing? I watched the original before watching Maverick since I never saw it. the original was a 6/10 and a true American movie. But this movie was different. It was an actual good movie that happened to be a sequel. Tom Cruise showed how strong of an actor he is in this one. And the story was more powerful than the first movie. Even my father loved it, and he hates military movies.
Excellent sequel. 10/ 10. Very different movie from the 1st, action packed.
Stupid movie with terrific aero scenes in the jets.
Should have been called "Top Gun: Maverick 'N' Rooster" - talk about bleeding a situation to death!!
Where have I seen this "special mission" before? Oh yeah, Star Wars when they were trying to blow up the planet - flying between walls and avoiding guns - remember? Or how about The Dam Busters from way back in the 1955 - pretty close to that one too.
Completely predicable - and here's a newsflash... ever heard of Drones or missiles to do the job?
Very generous 5.5/10
An exhilerating film, with top-tier action sequences, incredible cinematography, a perfectly-paced plot, with an engaging biuld up, leading up to an amazingly intense and breathtaking finale. The beautiful visuals and extraordinary sound design made for one of the best theater experiences of all time.
You know I wasn’t actually looking forward to this, but I actually enjoyed it immensely. Love you tom cruise, love you miles teller. Only part I didn’t enjoy was how hangman looks scarily like my older cousin.
That was surprisingly good. A fantastic movie. Storyline was good - nothing special but quite believable and better than expected. But the visuals were exceptional. Really loved it.
"Come on Mav do some of that pilot Shit!"
'Top Gun: Maverick' manages to achieve the impossible when it comes to modern summer movies, and that's finding the perfect balance of crowd-pleasing entertainment and a quality movie.
I originally had no interest or excitement for this movie and wasn't planning on seeing it in the cinema, until I saw the glorying reviews it received that convinced me to check it out, and I'm glad I did.
This was the most satisfying movie experience of the year.
All the flying sequences...well, it took my breath away. But surprisingly the story had a lot of heart to it, and some emotional scenes that I didn't expect to strike a chord with me. It keeps you on your toes and it's entertaining throughout. It's got heart, humour, and most of all a sense of freedom.
Tom Cruise is fantastic in this by the way. He's a great action star but the movie reminds us of his dramatic chops.
I also like the fact that this movie openly acknowledges that he is getting old. Unlike the 2017 movie 'The Mummy', where one of Russell Crowe's lines refers to Cruise's character as a "young man", despite Cruise being two years older than him. I mean, he looks so good for his age, but there's one scene in this movie where he's shirtless on a beach and he's got that body of someone approaching 60.
The chemistry between Jennifer Connelly and Cruise was electrifying and believable.
Also, how the movie handled Val Kilmer's character and how they wrote Kilmer's real health condition into the movie was beautifully handled.
You don't need to see the first movie to understand what's going on in this one. It's a sequel that doesn't rely too much on nostalgia. The sequel is a massive improvement over the original, while at the same time it respects the 1986 film and director Tony Scott.
Overall rating: 'Top Gun: Maverick' is one of the biggest surprises of the year. With this being Tom Cruise's highest-grossing film of all time, I can see why, as there's something re-watchable about it.
I don't know if I would say better than the original but it's still pretty good, especially the jet scenes in the second half. A lot of nods to the first film and a lot of "oh this is building up to an obvious nod" and then denied! I kind of like that.
Just when you think the jukebox is going to kick into "Loving Feeling" it doesn't and waiting the whole move to hear "I feel the need for speed" and feeling like it is within seconds of an obvious dialog build up was kind of fun. I think they did that on purpose, made it seem obvious that a nod was about to happen and then yank it away (I hear "PSYYYYYYYYCH!" each time).
It's worth watching. It's the only film in the past few years worth seeing at the theater for the whole experience.
Even if you aren't a Tom Cruise fan, you have to appreciate that this guy works his butt off for every role and does ALL of his own stunts, even the craziest stuff. Like in the new MI he drives a motorcycle off a cliff and pulls a parachute at 100 feet above the ground, he did that and it floors me. For me, though, I like Tom Cruise. He's always the same character but that character is neutral enough that you can see it repeatedly and not be turned off (unlike other repeat performances from actors like Ryan Reynolds, whose schtick is getting tired).
Fantastic film. Nostalgic. Edge of your seat excitement and suspense. Wish there was a little less Tom Cruise and a bit more Miles Teller, but enjoyed immensely.
Just the right amount of nostalgia in a modern movie. Thrill ride and heart strings well and truly tugged. Amazing!
As an action movie - pretty solid, nice visuals. I went to IMAX to have better experience and the movie looked fantastic.
In terms of actual plot - meh.
Can't say there is a depth to the characters, ending is a simple "they all lived happily ever after" and the mission and military action which drives the plot is ridiculous:
Tom Cruise and the team trains and then goes to bomb a nuclear site in Taymyr Peninsula (they try very hard not to say who the enemy is, but print bombing site coordinates in the culminating act). US Aircraft carrier group is somehow stealthily comes into Russian arctic waters, where it launches a strike with multiple Tomahawk missiles and aircrafts to destroy a nuclear facility, which is placed strategically not in the mountain to allow itself to be bombed. There is also a runway with the old US airplanes there for Mr. Cruise to escape, when his plane was hit after successful bombing. In the final air battle, Mr. Cruise has come out victorious out of a series of situations skewed excessively not in his favour.
Conclusion:
Tom Cruise is the Murica's best aircraft pilot: A New Hope anime live action is only worth to watch for the visuals.
Not as gay as the first one, still 50% propaganda.
Spell-binding, Immersive, Uplifting
Top Gun Maverick is a captivating and bona fide experience. This sequel of 1986 film Top Gun waves it magical wand and charms you all over with its cinematography, sound design and characters. Tom Cruise's earnest and sincere performance, backed with mesmerizing aerial aviation action and a heartfelt callback to its predecessor makes Top Gun Maverick a close to perfect film. The emotions , the nostalgia of past characters and friction between Tom and Mile's characters have such a warm representation that you just cant stop but admire.
Definitely one of the most engrossing films of this year, Tom Cruise's flawed protagonist character grows on the viewer and they can't stop but root for him throughout. His fight against his own past and whether he will let go or not is all the film about. I might have dropped a tear or two during the end credits, which for me in all means is blockbuster cinema and easily makes my money worth.
Watch the movie , comeback and watch this
Behind The Scenes
For the first half of the movie you’ll need to have seen the first movie to care- otherwise it’s a little cringe. The second half was cool as hell
It was ok at best, maybe I missed something and I'll try watching it again.
Combination of nostalgia and what movies should be more like…not all CG.
Well done, I’m glad it was worth the premier delays.
Highly enjoyable sequel that surpasses the original, It's still a little corny at times and we never get to understand more about the enemy the Top Gun team are up against, but the actors are all good and the flying scenes are suitably exciting.
I enjoyed it more than the original, tom cruise doesn’t look like he’s aged since the first one, bless val kilmer, aka ice man, some good sky action, all cast did well specially tom cruise (maverick) love the soundtrack!
Greatest Movie ever made, ever.
The perfect movie does exist and it is called "Top Gun Maverick".
Rarely do my expectations meet the hype of a new release but needless to say, this defo did! Felt like I was actually in the jet with them and those manoeuvres…. Incredible! Best viewed in an actual cinema and we all need Tom Cruise’s elixir of life; or maybe just his money ….
“The future is coming, and you’re not in it.” What an irony.
Such a great movie, the shots are SPECTACULAR and Tom's performance was excellent, all-around it's just great and even much better than the first.
“Top Gun” was a terrible movie back in the day, and the fact that this sequel just aimed at doing the exact same things with modern techniques wasn’t exactly encouraging. The difference is that this time there is a clear objective, the direction is solid, the characters are likable, and you can finally understand what the hell is going on on-screen.
The plot goes on autopilot (pun intended), and it’s all strictly limited to the bare minimum needed for an action blockbuster. Yet, this happens to be one of the most lightheartedly entertaining movies I have seen in a while. Even when it strictly remakes scenes and situations from the first movie, the nostalgia factor is hardly on the nose, and the training sections really helped feel involved in the actual mission once it started. I know nothing about aviation but I was never left behind.
We will all forget about it in less than a decade, but for now, it’s an action flick to spend quality time on.
The third act to this movie is freaking awesome
If you grew up with the original, and are scared about it getting messed up, don't be. This is a great film. Patriotic, action packed.
It has a good story, more content than the first, There is not much wrong with it, and even then it would be knit picking, I could have done with 1 less ohmage, and 1 less "Talk to me", and unlike the original, the soundtrack is forgettable minus the opening. See it in the theater if you can.
This one far surpasses the original. Kept me interested the entire time and much preferred the story as I do felt it had more depth than the first. Loved all the little nods to the original and the nostalgia. Didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did (wasn’t keen on the first) but thoroughly enjoyed it
Once again must Tom Cruse does it....... He is true pioneer of the art of acting, not leaving anything to much of green screen fakes,
the real deal is what he is all about
Better than the first one, that's for sure
Wasn’t expecting much - we know how sequels go, but this was so much better than I expected.
Well, I was nervous about going to see this as so many people I knew played it way up to me as a MUST-see movie. It did not disappoint! This is the first movie my wife and I have gone to see at the theatre in about 3 years. I would highly recommend seeing it on the big screen. With so many sub-par movies that have been coming out recently this was refreshing.
Excellent flick. First one we've seen in theatre in two+ yrs. Really fun stuff. I do remember other than the pandemic why we stopped going as much even before it hit. We managed to snag seats next to the only talkers in the theatre. There are privacy dividers at the cinema we went to so you can't just ask someone to be quiet as easily. Shh'ing only offered short-lived success. 9pm show also featured a crying infant in the top row. Lol. Stay home and enjoy the oled is the lesson I suppose for the future. Haha. Regardless, the nostalgia is through the roof and you can tell how much of a labour of love this was for all involved. Tom is sensational w what he's accomplishing this late into his career. Really great stuff here. 8.8 for me. Some really cool stunts and I enjoyed the rapport the cast seemed to share with each other. I rarely ever rewatch movies, but this is one I'm stoked to check out in 4k Dolby vision. A special breed.
An 1980s movie with a 2020s budget. Everything in the air was amazing, everything on the ground, pitiful.
Tom Cruise is like a fine wine.
"The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction."
This is a very well rounded movie. Movies don't feel like this much anymore and I am so happy I caught this in the theaters! The music, humor, stunts, and emotions were done so well and I can see why Tom Cruise fought for this to not go straight to streaming.
How do you give this a fair rating? It starts well and connects to the first movie right from the start. The story is quite okay, not the best piece of the story but light and easy to understand. The characters are the best part, and the special effects are significant. Adding the great music to that creates a cinematic masterpiece. In the end, it lacks a bit of reality with the old unguarded plane in the hangar, and it's too easy to lift on the short and damaged runway. But other than that, we were glued to the IMAX experience.
I am looking forward to seeing it again at my home cinema.
Every Oscar in the book should go to this movie. No words.
This IS the ultimate experience, there is no other way to see this then in the theaters.
I promise this is not just my nostalgia brain talking... Top Gun: Maverick is an excellent film. I might even go so far to say it is better than the first one. Sometimes it hits the feels, but mostly it's just pure adrenaline driven excitement, with some nostalgia and nods to it predecessor sprinkled in between. All six of us that took the trip to see it together were in agreement in the end... We loved it!!!
Got a big screen at home and a good sound system? Skip it. Go to the biggest screen around you to see this movie. IMAX worthy cinematography that will keep you at the edge of your seat. The action is lovely and practical effects are praiseworthy.
Can’t wait to go back to the cinema to see this one. Hands down, the best action film I have seen in a while.
Waited 36 years for this sequel, they damn sure had plenty of time to get it right! And they did!
This is definitely one of those times when the sequel surpasses the first in a franchise.
Loved the throwbacks and Easter eggs to the first film :two_hearts: so many moments had me and I loved the chemistry between Tom Cruise and Miles Teller, it would be great to see them working together again.
I watched the original movie for the first time only a few days ago and was not that impressed honestly. But I was blown away by the sequel. It‘s an incredible experience watching this film in the cinema. It‘s beyond thrilling with breathtaking visuals, really good acting and a very nice story. It‘s definitely one of best films I‘ve seen in recent times.
This was fantastic. The fact that nearly all of the flight scenes were filmed practically just makes it all the better. -a guy raised around P-51’s
Wow! That was a fun theater experience! A Top Gun sequel was not supposed to be this good. I like how the movie is actually focused on Maverick, and it's not a "the new cast takes over" movie, like some other sequels do. The action scenes are thrilling and extremely fun to watch. There's just so much life to them, instead of how soulless CGI can be. This is a peak blockbuster film. I'm glad Tom Cruise put his foot down, and made sure that this was released in theaters.
I know some people might disagree, but I actually like the sequel more than the original.
Loved it!! Nothing else to say than that!
Solid 8/10 from me. It's a good sequel and maintains basically the same spirit of the original.
Coming back from cinema and all i have to say is that is one of the best sequels i have ever watched. It was a unique experience watching this in cinema because everything worked in a perfect way from great directing to a well made script. It will probably make you feel emotional during it's time and you are going for sure to feel the nostalgy.Sorry for my bad English i am not in a perfect level but don't miss this one it's a little bit of a masterpiece.
8.7/10
A rare unnecessary sequel that might actually be better than the original. The first is known for being sexy and macho. With some fine action but the movie was always missing something.
The enemy jets just would show up out of nowhere pretty much was one flaw. Top Gun: Maverick is as sexy and macho. However, it’s story is better than the original and it’s just a better made movie.
When the enemy jets show up it’s just not out of nowhere and it makes sense. The movie could have turned into Behind Enemy Lines. I am grateful it doesn’t though since this is a fighter jet movie after all.
Tom Cruise and Miles Teller make a surprisingly good team. That brings back good memories of Maverick and Goose and it gets to you emotionally.
Uninspiring and predictable plot, full of the genres cliches. Tom Cruise is quite mediocre, he does not add any particular added value if not his fame. It is a film to watch for the action scenes, enhanced by the Dolby audio, as well as by a good soundtrack.
I honestly didn’t expect this movie to be that superb considering it’s precursor was just a slightly better than average Hollywood movie for it’s time. But with this movie they managed to keep the same feelings and atmosphere as the original while elevating it to the modern aesthetics of plane fighting and action films. The cinematography was masterful and it really made for a great movie. They did a decent job with the story too, not horribly special, but just good enough to keep things moving at a strong pace.
Premise - 15/20 - Not making another one would've been fine, but creating a situation where Capt. Mitchell has to teach others to fly an insane route to complete a mission is a decent premise. Adding in Goose's son was a good idea, as well.
Cast/characters - 12/20 - Tom Cruise has very limited acting ability, and Pete isn't very deep. Miles Teller did a great job as Goose's son. Jennifer Connelly is always one of my favorites, and she didn't disappoint. Hangman was Mitchell back in the day, but the other Top Gun members were not fleshed out well.
Story - 19/20 - The action and suspense were solid throughout the movie, and the ending was satisfying.
Dialogue - 13/20 - There were some quality, meaningful conversations, but the dialogue was not awesome. Just meaningful for the characters.
World-building - 16/20 - Getting engrossed in the Top Gun school and the action scenes was pretty easy.
75/100 - 4 stars out of 5 - A really good movie that relies on your viewpoint on the hotness of Tom Cruise, your appreciation of the story extension from the first movie, and your enjoyment of this type of action. Tom Cruise is overrated, but I was all in for the rest of it.
Loved it. Get to the cinema and watch highly recommend.
Scenes from the first, tributes to the first. Good for the training scenes, good for the aerial combats, here they don't fire the same missile 3 times. As expected, Tom Cruise runs
The most :asterisk_symbol::asterisk_symbol:stressful:asterisk_symbol::asterisk_symbol: movie I've ever seen. And it is damn good.
Why change an awesome soundtrack. Check, great tunes. Loved the nostalgia. Loved the fight scenes. Loved the subtle comedy and romance. Great young cast and Tom Cruise is awesome.
What an awesome movie! I loved it from the beginning to the end. I was able to see that Tom was in his element and it shows! I know it's probably to much to wish for but I hope they continue this movie with the use of new cast and sometimes a bit of Tom in it. You should definitely watch this!
Amazing flight actions. Best action movie ever to be seen in Cinemark xd box.
This movie is one of the best, I highly recommend that you watch it in the theater, the cinematic and sound effects are just perfect. Everything is good about this movie, Tom is really doing everything himself, you can see that from the camera work. I am in my thirties and I can't do shit of this, lol xD
masterpiece.. especially for who enjoyed the first back then.. and Tom cruise as always top..
I have come to the cinema without any expectations. I'm not Top Gun fan, I watched the 1st part 3 days ago. This movie was always something that I have missed in the previous era. From the sequel I expected something similar to the archetype (or worse). I was so wrong. This is really solid piece of cinema. I miss movies like this - simple story with some plots, good casting and acting. I can sincerely recommend this one!
I feel the need, the need for speed, and boy did the film deliver on that promise. High octane action, great emotional depth and wonderful performances. The entire cast and crew created a film for the ages!!
I've seen this twice in 3 days. That's why it is a 9 out of 10 for me.
Some details...
First up, a round of applause to Tom Cruise and his team for not making a disgrace of a film. They have delivered a worthy sequel to the original - a film that we hold so dear but time has not been too kind to.
the jet sequences are phenomenal. Absolutely beautifully shot but they're direct descendents of the MI franchise, particularly Fallout, and it goes to show how this film has been percolating for a decade or so. They're the benchmark for aviation shots.
the cinematography. I'll say it, it's a mixed bag. The colour is borrowed from the first but there were times the higher frame rate in dramatic scenes made it verge on the Cobra Kai/Netflix feel. My second viewing reduced this a bit so it may be the cinema you watch it in could define the experience.
Jennifer Connelly... I'm not sold on her acting here. It's a bit too cocky that it comes across as monotone. But it's a minor niggle as she's essential to the plot and her arc works very well.
The students. A little bit Cobra Kai again. But by the time the final 3rd comes around, we're past caring about anything hammy or contrived. The story rolls like a freight train and everyone comes along for the ride.
I found this film more enjoyable on a 2nd watch. The pacing is excellent and you appreciate that on the second watch. Cruise gives you what you want in the first 3rd, builds a wonderful tapestry (there's a reason it's called "Maverick") in the second 3rd, and then gives us what we need in the final 3rd.
Truly, Tom Cruise needs a lot more appreciation than he gets - across the board. This guy doesn't phone it in. He is totally believable in these roles. His dedication to the craft should be lauded from the rooftops.
I know these are just films. But they are also cultural touch points. And this one deserves to have the same impact as the first one for its absolutely spectacular aerial cinematography.
9/10
I want to watch this everyday
I am positively surprised, for this was really fun! The shots from the jets have also been worthwhile
Having been around for the 1st top gun I was afraid about this one. But it did not disappoint I heard people say it's better than the original... Well it definitely is!! The casting of Rooster is amazing. Also seeing Val Kilmer again brought a tear to my eye. What a movie and the music of Hans Zimmer is epic as always!!
Like a long haul flight in business class, in spite of some slight turbulence, it's a really pleasant ride.
Fighter pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell is called back to Top Gun to train a group of pilots to fly a secret mission and the rest should be obvious.
Despite raising the obvious tropes of the genre, the film throttled back on the romance and, though it came dangerously close to crashing into the nostalgia factor, it was able to pull up at the last moment and soar into some wonderfully filmed action sequences.
And that's what saves the film in the end. The ability Maverick has to include an emotional payload with its feats of aeronautical derring-do makes the movie successful in what it wants to be: a decent big-budget action film that takes off from the original film without remaining grounded in it.
More than what i expected, a pure shot pf adrenaline rush, Maverick is indeed a better successor..... And something that should be experienced in the big screen. From the opening sequence itself the film just keeps on giving to it's fans. And that said, those who just walks into the cinema hall without even watching the 86 Top Gun will feel like they've watched something that has Tom Cruise in it...
Just caught the first screening in my city. Have to say it was a terrific movie. Its a simple storyline and the major focus is on the flight scenes. Was simply blown away by what the team was able to achieve. It was breathtaking! The time just flew by. Even the nostalgia bit was nicely done. Do catch it on the big screen...
What an excellent sequel - I, in fact, like it more than its predecessor.
'Top Gun: Maverick' is fantastic, simply put. I was expecting it to be good, but it's actually much more enjoyable than I had anticipated. The callbacks to the original are expertly done, the new characters are strong/well cast, it has plenty of meaning, music is fab and the action is outstanding - the aerial stuff is sensational.
The story is superb, with each high stake coming across as intended - parts even gave me slight goosebumps, which is a surprise given I'm not someone who has a connection to the 1986 film. It's all super neatly put together, I honestly came close to giving it a higher rating.
Tom Cruise is brilliant as he reprises the role of Maverick, while Miles Teller comes in and gives a top performance. Jennifer Connelly is another positive, though her role does kinda feel a tiny bit forced in order to have a love interest; given Kelly McGillis' [unexplained] absence.
Monica Barbaro stands out most from the fresh faces, though I actually did enjoy watching them all - which is something I thought the film may struggle with, adding new people, but it's done nicely; sure Jon Hamm and Glen Powell are a little cliché, though overall I approve.
A great watch - I'd highly recommend it, though naturally would suggest watching the previous film first if you haven't already.
