    5x01 Factory Ammo Discussion

    • no air date25m

What ammunition is best for extreme long range shooting? In this video Rex steps up the pace and discusses factory ammo selection and gives some quick tips in testing new loads. The number one limitation to factory loaded ammunition for extreme long range shooting will obviously be limited projectile selection. Some of the best bullets are not offered in factory loads, so custom reloading may be warranted. Ammunition consistency is generally pretty good when using brand name American factory ammo. One major brand that may require closer quality inspection may be Winchester. Most other Boxer primed brass cased factory ammo is loaded with a fair degree of precision.

    Tips:

    1. Choose ammo with appropriate projectiles for LR shooting and be sure they are matched to your barrel twist rate.

    2. Test different brands of ammo only after the barrel has been broken in and the bore has reached a state of consistency of fouling. Avoid testing ammo with a perfectly clean bore. Frictional dynamics will change as fouling increases. Wait till fouling equilibrium is achieved, then begin your ammunition group testing.

    3. Once you have selected an appropriate factory ammo, try to obtain ammo in bulk qualities, preferably from the same lot of manufacture, to ensure maximum consistency. The tooling using to manufacture ammunition is adjusted and replaced as needed, so different batches may vary.

    4. Avoid budget priced steel cased ammunition for long range precision shooting.

    5. Research ammo before purchase. There are many great tests and articles published to review for all kinds of ammo out there. Take advantage of the collective experience of other marksmen to narrow your choices.

NOTE: Unfortunately, due to the enormous selection of different cartridges and loads out there and considering the unique performance and character of each individual rifle out there, drawing any solid conclusions from previously tested rifle/ammo combinations out there m

Developing the right load for extreme long range precision shooting may be slightly different than the way we would do it for close and medium range target shooting. Special care needs to be taken to ensure our loads display minimal muzzle velocity variation (MVV) while still getting the smallest group possible. Special attention to cartridge case consistency may be required in order to attain this goal. Determining the right powder charge may require using either the ladder method or OCW (optimal charge weight) methods. Either way you go make sure to keep an eye on your MV dispersion.

See: http://optimalchargeweight.embarqspace.com/ for more details on OCW

SPECIAL NOTE: Make sure your bore is in the same state of powder and copper fouling as you would anticipate it to be in the field. Although the above article and other posts may beg to differ on this point, for our shooting discipline (REAL WORLD extreme range precision shooting), we will need to ensure that our load will be the best suited for the bore conditions we most anticipate to exist when deploy in the field. A dirty bore will shoot differently than a clean bore. Develop your loads for realistic field conditions if the rifle is to be used in the field. Develop your loads for pristine benchrest conditions if it is to be used on a bench.

    5x09 Bipods and Monopods

    • no air date25m

Bipods can be very handy for the long range precision rifleman IF they are used properly. Rex explains the best ways to use bipods for long range precision rifle shooting. Rex also discusses the importance of toe support when establishing a solid shooting position. Monopods are a handy device but may not be the best option when setting up in the field. Rifle harmonics and vibrations can wreak havoc if your rifle is deployed improperly, so this video may be very important in getting you on target.

Rex also briefly discusses different bipod types and designs to give you a better idea of what may work well and what will not in the field.

Rex's # 1 bipod recommendation: Harris S series with 9-13" notch legs (or a bipod with similar design features). The 6-9" benchrest models may also work well in areas with very little vegetation.

.50 cal rifles and other big bore rifles equipped with muzzle brakes require special attention to how you lay behind the them and establish your shooting position. If you don't, muzzle brake pull-off can shift the axis of the bore before the bullet exits the muzzle affecting your point of impact (POI), sometimes drastically. For rifles .338 caliber and up with high efficiency muzzle brakes, this video is a must see tutorial on how to deploy your weapon system with the greatest effectiveness.

Muzzle brakes for long range shooting offer a tradeoff. Although they effectively reduce felt recoil, they also significantly increase muzzle blast. Whether or not a muzzle brake will be right for you is something you will have to determine by doing your own cost / benefit analysis. In this video Rex discussed just that.

There are many different scope mounts and rings available for you to use on your long range precision rifle. Which ever choice you end up making, there are certain things you want to understand before mounting them. Your ability to track moving targets and acquire targets quickly will hinge upon how your scope is situated on your rifle. Most of the grievances rifle shooters have about using optics are rooted in poorly mounted optics. If the scope is set up right, you should have no problems getting on target quickly and efficiently.

In this video, Rex walks you through the entire scope mounting procedure while discussing equipment selection as he goes. This may not be the most riveting action packed episode ever produced, but it is loaded with numerous tips and insights concerning the topic. If your watch this all the way through, you should understand everything you need to know to get your optics properly mounted.

    Rex's recommendations:

    1. Use a one piece scope base if possible.
    2. Match the base to the rings --use the same material (steel on steel or aluminum on aluminum).
    3. Leaving enough room for your bolt handle operation, try to get the scope as low as you can -- this may require careful measuring of your scope dimensions before purchasing rings and bases.
    4. Use thread locker.
    5. Be careful not to over torque / damage your screws.
