This is among my favorite episodes of season 1. It isn't a remarkably story in itself but, while we have already seen the holodeck before, it was the first real holodeck episode. Some things regarding the holodeck invironment would by changed later f.e. an exit should apear anywhere. So Picard sending Data to look for the other exit makes little sense. But again at the time that was not established yet.
The costumes looked great (they won an Emmy I think), especially Beverly who really looks stunning here (yeah, I am a fan of hers). And we learn something about Picard which gives a little more depth to the character.
Couple of things I noticed (interestingly I still find something I missed before). Beverly looked really annoyed when Picard asked her to join him on the holodeck when he also invited Whalen. I guess she was hoping for some alone time?
And I think we have another case of writing convinience that Beverly can enter the holodeck, also with slight difficulties, while LaForge just minutes later can't.

Fun episode, but you have to turn most logic off to get the most fun out of it. You have to accept that the holodeck is basically magic for the purposes of fitting the plot. (How does a hologram bullet cause a real life-threatening injury? What?!)
One of the best parts was when they were first being held at gunpoint, they were all amused and excited about it.

$20 a day in 1941? That's prohibitively expensive! I assumed that was going to be a joke about how the crew is from so far in the future, they have no grasp of the old economy. But the holodeck lady just accepted that without batting an eye.

"I was created on a planet-"
"Data."
"South America."

Bev looked great. Not a fan of whatever crusher/Picard tension they are setting up though. Not sure why. I like how Wes is helpful but I think their dependence on him is sightly unrealistic. DS9 had Jake who was not useful at all to starfleet goals and VOY had former borg Icheb who I loved and was more realistic in his help of voyager.

This was a fun one

Nobody knows how the holographic room works. Nobody. It's not the crew's daily recreation area, it's a magical unit flying in from the future.

Most plot twists evoke a whole palette of emotions from laughing at stupidity to Spanish shame. It's a pity it took some good actor time to do that farce. The episode is not terrible, but it is well below the usual bar set by the series.

Aside from the blood, this was a good episode.
