Gilda

I was loving this movie until the extra melodramatic third act. Had potential to be one of my faves but got a little too cheesy in the end. Still... Rita Hayworth makes every moment of the film worth it.

Talk to Her

This is one of the slower movies of Almodovar and I am going to need some time to form an opinion on it. However, just like every Almodovar film, it's impactful, shocking and makes you think. That's all you can ask from movies, really.

What Have I Done to Deserve This?

One of those films that will really leave you feeling quite uncomfortable and unsettled. It does a good job at portraying the precarious living situations of the Madrid working class in the 80s, succeeding in making you feel as anxious and suffocated as the main character.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

great neo-noir. just thought the last act was a bit weak, especially the soap-like ending

Opening Night

Little bit of a slow burn, highly repetitive, but by the end, both seem to work in the film's favour, in creating increasing uneasiness and anxiety. One of the best I've watched on psychosis, the original Black Swan.

12

interesting reiteration of 12 Angry Men. I felt it was too long and too on the nose, but this format always works.

Absolute masterpiece on subjective realism. One of my all time faves.

2 Days in Paris

Interesting take on Paris from the eyes of a local, very fun to watch as a fellow southern european with some of the same costumes. I love Julie Delpy.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

A very typical theatre play adaptation, with a story set in a very short time frame, and only a couple of locations, but the screenplay truly gives these actors opportunities to shine. Viola is one of the greats, we all know that, but it's hard to see Chadwick, who steals the film, and had so much to give still. A great testament to his talent, I hope he gets an Oscar nomination. May he rest in peace.

i was highly entertained the whole way through, i didn't feel as lost as I thought I would but that's just because I made peace from the start with the fact that I wouldn't be able to understand everything. But i understood enough and i think it's quite impressive for a filmmaker to come up with and execute this kind of plot, so I applaud Christopher Nolan. I'm also obsessed with John David Washington.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always

a truly chilling depiction of the difficulties, in all areas, of the process of getting an abortion. couldn’t get more real.

Citizen Kane

In all honesty, if this was made today, in almost the exact same way, it would still be a smash hit. It's timeless in its visuals and in its mystery with one of the greatest open endings in cinema history. Really enjoyed it, clearly ahead of its time in 41.

Howl's Moving Castle

Felt like there were a couple of loose ends, but overall so magical, so fantastical, so breathtakingly beautiful. There's no better place to escape to than a studio ghibli film!

Mank

A little dull and long if you're looking to be entertained, but highly interesting if you're looking to learn something. I still consider myself a green film fan, but I watched Citizen Kane in preparation for this, and Mank right after, and because of them I now feel a little bit more of an insider in the history of cinema, and that's very valuable. Movies about movies are always a web of meta layers, and this one goes further by adapting the style and structure of the film it is talking about. Definitely worth the watch.

BTS Map of the Soul ON:E Day 1

Born singers, born performers, born legends, with a discography made out of gold. Every song is legendary, and BTS are unmatched when they step on that stage. Map Of The Soul: 7 deserved a stadium tour, forever in our hearts queen :pensive::fist:

P.S.: I will physically never recover from that entire opening section (those ouftis?!!:!&:£/&/ and the choreo :kissing_closed_eyes::ok_hand:), the shadow-black swan-jimin dance solo section, and the f#cking attack that my time and filter one after the other were. God I miss October 10th :sob:

Listen

This started out sooo strongly and then just kind of went all over the place. It felt way too short, rushed and like there were scenes missing, especially at the end. The emotional flow felt inconsistent and unsatisfactory. I’m sure there was an intention to give it a realistic style, but in the end, if you’re making a feature film there has to be some concern with the dramatic pacing, and it just didn’t work here. Sad, i had high expectations for this and hoped to finally find a portuguese film that checked all the boxes.

Interstellar

Yes this film is a cinematic achievement in every sense of the word - incredible screenplay, incredible cgi, cinematography, editing, directing and soundtrack. As mind-blowing and testing as the story manages to be, in the end what stays is the love between a father and a daughter. Science-fiction isn’t my thing so this could never really become a personal favourite, but I am happy to objectively praise its prowesses.

The Descendants

It was rather boring, didn't really offer anything new or interesting, both in its screenplay and in its directing. Only rewatched it cus I had to for a class. Clooney and Woodley were great, though!

BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky

It’s an endearing documentary. However, I don’t think they intended or realised just how depressing some of it came out like when they were making it.

The girls are incredibly talented and so sweet, but there’s so many walls they still hold around them. There’s definitely a specific image they want to convey - “we work hard but ultimately we love it”, but we barely ever get to see them loving it throughout. A documentary like this usually works towards revealing the humans behind the performers and lead you to connect, and I still couldn’t do that.

They’re very much carefully polished diamonds - perfect faces, slim bodies and perfectly agreeable personalities - or at least that’s what this documentary shows. There were, though, a few moments that felt truly genuine - like jisoo with her makeup artist friend, or the ending scene - and those are the ones that stood out the most to me... Just wish there had been more.

Judas and the Black Messiah

I didn’t know much about Fred Hampton, and was completely unaware of the existence of Bill O’Neal so this was definitely a story that needed to be told. Would love to see a film purely centred around Fred and how, at just 21, he became such a proliferate leader.

Judas And The Black Messiah successfully followed the biopic formula to deliver a passionate depiction of real life fight and betrayal. The highlights are the boldness of its unapologetic socialist approach and Daniel Kaluuya being absolutely brilliant once again (Lakeith Stanfield is great too).

The Trial of the Chicago 7

It's quite heavy-handed and pretty formulaic but a great watch nevertheless. Will lead you on an emotional journey whilst being really informative all the while (for a non-American who had never heard of this trial). I'm really enjoying this wave of fuck the system movies coming from big-budget Hollywood at the moment, whatever shape they take.
