Watching episode #2 now. First impression: if the Marvel movies are like ivory, this show is like cardboard. The lead actor Finn Jones is great, he's making the show. But so far the other actors just aren't. Sorry.
Jessica Stroup is a pretty face that knows her lines, but doesn't demonstrate even the tiniest bit of character depth. It's like she comes to the studio, plays her part, and leaves without giving it another thought.
Tom Pelphrey, well I know he's a good actor, he was great in Banshee. But over here, in the first two episodes he's such a superficial character, it doesn't do him justice so I hope that will change as we get further along. Because he needs a character with a proper backstory so he can show his talent. Like the guy he played in Banshee: it wasn’t even a main character really, but even so, he left me wanting and wondering. It takes talent to be able to pull that off. He’s got it.
Anyway. Iron Fist. The storyline so far is lame. I won't give spoilers, except for maybe one word: Arrow. Generally, it gets really cheesy and full of cliches we’ve all seen a thousand times in various movies and series already. Psych ward, really?
The lines and story details are lame. Who in the world would not recognize a childhood friend 15 years later?! Only in Netflix land do these things happen. And you can almost predict what the characters are going to say next, like all the time.
I’m doing my best to not give you any real spoilers here, but ffs, no sensei in the world would call themselves a master and then go out to teach their pupils martial arts by letting them try to mug the sensei. And a real sensei would never talk down on their students. What were the writers thinking?!!
Choreography... It’s like they didn’t even try to make an effort. Not impressed at all. It's easy to imagine where the jump ropes were used.
Camera work.. let’s just say they do use nice color filters. That’s not a compliment. The staff knows what they’re doing, but here it shows in a bad way, like how bored they are after making the umpth Netflix tv show.
And finally the set like most of the walls are made out of cardboard. Sounds like it too. Audio quality (from boom mics) is horrible.
All in all.. well like I said, I’m only two episodes in. So it might get better. But that being said, it does have a really cheap taste to it. This is not the Marvel I’m used to. It has all the elements except for the most important one: soul. It lacks a soul.
So here’s to hoping it’ll get better. Would I recommend watching it? Yes. You might be less critical than I am. If so: great. Hope you enjoy every second of it. After I finish writing this, I’ll do my best to enjoy it too.
But I just had to get this off my chest first, and if you agree with my review, it’s time for more of us to start voicing this stuff to the degree that the studios will listen. Because we want quality, but what we get is cardboard box degraded entertainment. It’s not worth ploughing through if this is how it stays, so the rest of the story better be damn good, it’s a Marvel’s show for heaven's sake, not DC Comics!
If things stay like this though, I predict that I’m not staying a Netflix subscriber for much longer. Because if there’s any general indication to quality running down hill with them, this show proves how sloppy they have become.
Come on, tv show makers, at least try to make an effort, please!
Wonderful Finale for a great series. I cried. A lot. A LOT.
The perfect ending. :)
What can you say about the farewell of a show that has meant so much to so many people? It is the kind of event that you can only judge to some extent because at a certain point the "love letter to the fans" that Craig Daniels wrote draws you in emotionally and you end up loving it. I guess I deserve to give this show the best tribute I can. Let me start here, I am a big fan, and all my life I have been bullied and never had very many friends. The last few years have been especially tough for me and I have struggled with very intense things that have led to some very serious actions, to say the least. I have grown up with these characters as part of my life and throughout my life they have served as friends when I had no other ones. The last few years these characters have been there for me and seeing them grow has helped me grow. A show that means so much to me had to finish perfectly or it all would be ruined. I sat down already teary eyed knowing that they would be gone from my life in an hour. The episode delivered great laughs, but it delivered a lot more. The episode delivered very intimate moments that were much needed. Plot lines that begun throughout the show came to a good conclusion and old stars returned with perfect timing. It was a sweet, beautiful, amazing, perfect love letter from the amazing cast to all of it's fans. I must admit that I was in tears seeing how much the characters had grown since we first visited this little town of Scranton Pennsylvania. The story line of the friendship between Dwight and Jim is particularly heart- warming. Every character ended up just where they should have and the final shot was perfection. "Sometimes goodbyes are a *****" but this perfect love letter softened the blow. The show will be missed, but it did end perfectly.
This episode received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards. Greg Daniels was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Ben Patrick, John W. Cook, and Rob Carr were nominated for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation. David Rogers and Claire Scanlon won for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series, marking the fifth win for The Office at the Emmys overall and the series' first win since 2009.Rogers and Scanlon also won an ACE Eddie award for Best Edited Half-Hour Series for Television.
Wasn't a big fan of this start to the season in the first two episodes. They seem to want to push as much Beth down your throat as possible and I'm honestly just sick and tired of her character. Not growth, no arc, she's the exact same person she was 5 seasons ago with some added backstory to try and make her feel more sympathetic. Kelly Reilly's acting is some of the best you'll see, but I'm sick and tired of Beth. And I'm especially sick and tired of her dogging on Jamie in the same exact way season after season after season. The show seems to want to keep showing you Beth treating Jamie like dirt, and it's just way too old and repetitive at this point. I still think they should turn Jamie into a full on villain, they've set him up to be a perfect villain but they're not taking that step. I think if he started outwardly fighting the Duttons and actually getting some major victories, especially against Beth, it would add so much to the show. Really anything different and new would make the show better, but they mostly just keep on making the same show season after season. The added politics were fresh and new and very welcome, I actually found this to be the most enjoyable part of these first two episodes simply because it's not just the same old thing. But everything else has gotten too stagnant and overdone. The show also desperately needed more Kayce in these first two episodes. He's the easiest character to root for and without his presence I found myself having a not knowing where to aim my support and therefore not really caring about anything. It also feels like they're bringing in a new character who's whole thing is just going to be being Beth 2.0 so... yay. So there are pieces to enjoy (the politics), but overall disappointed in this premiere. There's a lot of show left this season so I want to be hopeful but I just didn't care for this start.
This is an honest, spoiler-free review coming from your average fan (not a critic):
I just saw this new marvel film, and I have to say... it's no where near as bad as the critics make it out to be.
Yes there is a lot of dialogue. But it gives the characters a chance to shine and for scenes to breathe.
People call this film dense. I would disagree. Yes there is a fair bit of plot and history told, however I would say that other mcu films have simply much simpler plotlines most of the time.
There are moments when things are just about to become exciting, and then it is interrupted with more dialogue which instantly kills the suspension.
There are a number of plot twists in this film, and some unexpected things happen that I wouldn't have seen coming.
This film has a slow burn, but sometimes that's a good thing. Would I have liked more action? Yes. Was I unhappy with the action we do get? No.
I will admit, going into this film I was expecting a masterpiece, and while I wouldn't quite call it that, its definitely a well-made film, marvel or not.
Oh. And expect to have to do some reading at the very beginning. Kinda reminds me of a classic Star Wars opening crawl.
