A sports movie that gradually transitioned into a dog movie, and somehow kinda failed at being both.
Probably the best Branagh Poirot movie so far, mostly by virtue of not having the ugly, plastic sheen of the previous 2 movies. This one captures the old school filmmaking style Branagh is going for pretty authentically, and the visuals are easily the best thing about this movie. With that being said, the final result is still nothing to write home about. While the characters and acting are generally ok, the dialogue and mystery are once again unexciting and lack a distinct artistic flair. Add to that a sluggish pace and poorly executed touches of horror (really unnecessary if you’re not willing to lean into that influence in a creative way), and you have a movie that is overall pretty forgettable and dull.
4.5/10
WARNING - YOU WILL NEVER GET BACK THE 100 MINUTES YOU WASTE WATCHING THIS MOVIE
Expected a good film from the reviews I'd read.
I was wrong.
It's a brilliant film.
The film never falls into femminist didascalism.
A beautiful aesthetic.
Saltburn is well worth watching. The story was excellent and the performances were captivating; at times I found it hard to look away.
My only gripe would be that Oliver got off too easily. There would definitely have been an investigation after each death, and he would have been a prime suspect. Other than that, it was a great film: 7/10.
Decidedly original, meticulously tailored suspense, confronting and masterfully written.
It is independent and relatively lower budget films like this that leave me in awe of the creative process of film. This isn't necessarily the film for those looking for 'big scares', but it is particularly tense, well paced and undoubtedly dark with many very vivid scenes of violence. The writing is a definite strong point of this film, writer-director Demián Rugna is an absolute talent, and this movie has secured his oeuvre on my to-watch list.
There were some fairly unsubtle context dumps, but not after giving a chance to piece together the narrative for yourself. It does frequently fall into the territory of 'protagonist makes repeated terrible and frustrating decisions', but given the development of the protagonist (such as his responsibility as a parent, and his continual personal failings towards his family) this is entirely fair. The momentum unfortunately lags in the third act, with an ending that I found to be somewhat anticlimactic in nature.
While not a criticism (again, it links to themes), those with a particular aversion to depictions of child abuse or violence may want to skip this one.
In my opinion, this film highlights first of all the morbid approach that ordinary people have towards trials and judicial cases.
People have an absolute need to find a culprit, and journalists generally fuel this morbidity.
The task of finding the truth, and therefore convicting or acquitting, lies with the courts, not with the people or journalists.
While the job of journalists should be to tell the facts, to keep people informed.
But people always need to take the side of one or the other, the accused or the victim. People don't care what is true, they only care about the clash between the parties, the anger, the violence.
The only truth is the one told by Daniel. What is this process for? To find the truth, which is impossible anyway, given the only circumstantial evidence. Or understand why all this happened?
I really liked this film, with a dry narration, objective writing, an authentic interpretation by all the actors, because it doesn't lead you to take anyone's side, but makes you catch the importance of understanding why these tragedies happen.
Its a good movie. It does shows a different view of a father and son's relationship
Great movie, I loved it. And the less you know about it before watching, the better.
This is how DC's Movies should have been made. It's action sequences are insanely awesome. Amber Heard is drop dead gorgeous like a goddess in this movie. Jason Momoa is born to play Aquaman. Perfect castings. Don't miss this amazing movie guys.
You know it's bad when you can't switch off your brain to enjoy the mindless fun because your intelligence is being insulted at every turn.
Messed me up in the best ways. Unreal film, needs to be watched with zero spoilers to have full impact.
The most A24 non-A24 movie I've ever seen.
Sexy nonsense. I liked it.
It's one of those films where it could truly go either way on a rewatch - I could see myself both hating this film or loving this film in the future. But for now I'll sip my coffee and enjoy the protests of the rest of y'all.
The Meg.
Alternative title: Everything wrong with contemporary Hollywood in 2 hours.
Alternative title II: This one’s for you, China.
Just shut up, Meg.
2/10
Split is... fine. McAvoy is excellent, as is Anya Taylor-Joy, but the movie around them often isn't at their level.
Then the final twist gives it a whole new life. As an Unbreakable fan, this movie is exciting more for the promise of things to come than for the movie itself. If Unbreakable was a grounded superhero origin story, Split is a grounded supervillain origin story. Will the next Shyamalan movie be the showdown?
I fear not many people will "get" the twist in the theater. Unbreakable is one of the less known, and most underrated, Shyamalan movies. Split will certainly reignite its cult following, and I'm genuinely excited for the future of the Shyamalan Cinematic Universe.
Nor Split nor The Visit are masterpieces, but they sure are enjoyable movies, that show a director that has learned from his mistakes and is getting back on track. And I'm rooting for Shyamalan.
The movie is very visually stunning. The story telling, however, not so much. It seems to be at a loss of how to give the background information - there are memory recollections, lines about the past, and just plain old scene jumps. They threw all of the background information together with a weak plot; it ended up being a jumbled mess.
I appreciated that the movie was trying to build on the original story, however, I really don't feel as if there was anything original in this adaptation.
My attention span has been quite awful lately, but this movie, it made me freeze in front of the screen. It is twisted and odd, but stunning at the same time. The way it made me feel is hard to describe, but it made me feel things for sure. I'd recommend it.
I thought the movie was great. Tense and the pacing was well done. Not too long and didn't drag. The astronauts are dumb and it's easy to say don't go in there when you are watching. I like Jake Gyllenhaal I think he's a great actor and too bad Ryan Renyolds died so early in the movie but I kinda was expecting it based on the posters him being the third name. The twist at the end i saw coming as soon as they got in the life boats but it still was done well with the fishermen finding him.
A great movie that's based on a true story that still rings true to this day. African Americans are incarcerated 5x more than whites and are given 3x longer jail sentences than white people that commit the same crimes. It's sad that In 2020, a person skin complexion can still be a factor in society.
Anyway, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx were phenomenal in this movie.
Same movie; just set in New York City. While Kevin is more diabolical than ever and clearly trying to kill the Sticky Bandits/Wet Bandits. With that said the movie is full of charm and the holiday spirit.
While the soundtrack is superb. I just really hate Buzz and how he always gets away with starting with Kevin. Which makes me think of the mom especially as a jerk. Also since it always takes her awhile to realize Kevin is missing.
Don't underestimate or look over this movie i almost did but after a friend recommended it & i saw the comments here i gave it a shot & glad i did... what an excellent movie especially the fact it was something different for a change.
As many people have mentioned the whole time, life & money parallels that can be drawn are what really makes this movie & we can all relate. timberlake was surprisingly good too.
I disagree with many of the comments on this page. Sure, the film is slow paced, but what did people expect? Car chases, the next Trainspotting? It's a very well made film, being at once an unsensationalistic look at how drugs can ruin a man's life (and that of his family), and the loving relationship between a father and his son. The film resonated with me on a personal level too, and brought back memories of the young people I knew who are no longer here thanks to the evil (and I mean that word in a very real sense) of drugs.
Oh, and the performances were stellar. Watch it, and then make a special effort to love the people closest to you.
I dare to say... it was better than Grey. For a such ridiculous story it was far more realistic which made it so much more enjoyable (and I enjoyed Grey).
A devastating look at how addiction can not only ruin one person's life but also their family's too. The film can be really frustrating at times but that is what addiction is. Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell both give fantastic performances.
"Scary stories make life less scary."
Haven't watched Murder on the Orient Express yet and thought Death on the Nile was boring but I really enjoyed A Haunting in Venice.
It's very slow but kept me glued to the screen the whole time. Good story and mystery but the characters are what drives this, they're interesting. The interview format got a bit repetitive at some point but it works for the most part and it elevates Hercule Poirot as a character every time. I didn't predict the culprit but the clues were definitely there! A criticism; I'll be vague but the mystery solver felt a bit overpowered and the problem solving unearned.
The supernatural and horror twist is what really elevated the experience for me, we even got a few jumpscares and it's spooky. The palazzo set is perfection and the dark, rainy, stormy atmosphere is always a great choice. The imagery is absolutely stunning, amazing lighting, stylish camerawork and great cast.
Worth watching in a theater but at the same time I would save this for the Halloween season—i'd consider it a Halloween movie. I had no expectations going in but overall this was a good murder mystery!
Ruffalo gives the performance of his career in this sly, softspoken and understated narrative, which hooks you from the open and never lets go. Like "THE BIG SHORT", a peek at how the world really works.
The story is engaging and absolutely gripping. Thank you for the prolonged fight "Robert Bilott" against corporate deception and irresponsibility. Thank you for telling this story that otherwise many people would not have known.
Give Cillian a fucking Oscar already. Its so good, so powerful. It explodes in your face, a movie meant to be seen on a big screen! The movie of the year
