Hannah Gadsby: Nanette

I just finished watching this stand-up and it's difficult to gather my words right now. I knew her from Please like me so I clicked on her Netflix video, expecting something funny, maybe some sarcasm, some jokes about her being lesbian... I didn't expect all the truths and beautiful, angry and powerful speech that she gave.

Please watch it, it's worth your time

How to Get Away with Murder: 2x10 What Happened to You, Annalise?

Viola Davis' acting is just too good to be true.

Legally Blonde

I watched it after reading that it was a feminist movie. It's way better than I expected (though the french voices are awful) even if the scenario is really obvious. It's sweet and just what I needed in a bad time of my depression.
The bad point for me was the cliché of homosexual people.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: 7x10 Admiral Peralta

Really disappointed that they would have a gender reveal party. I think that's a part of american trend/culture that should be quickly forgotten.

Inventing Anna

Interesting show, well acted and well paced but I didn't like how Rachel was painted. No matter how much she used the story afterward to make money, she was still a victim. I felt like they were too nice toward Anna too. I get it, she's definitely interesting and someone from a low social class scamming rich people is a story a lot of us can get behind. But she also completely mistreated real people, who genuinely suffered from that. She's not some kind of Robin Hood

Love and Leashes

Such a perfect romance movie! It's so nice to see how fun d/s is for the two main characters. They managed to make it sexy but also pretty entertaining.
I'm very surprised because I genuinely didn't think it would be that fun to watch

Marie Antoinette

I actually quite enjoyed it. The main interest of that movie is of course the bling-bling side of Versailles. I don't agree with everything in that movie and the characters were all rather superficially describe except the royal couple, in my opinion but I liked the performance and the atmosphere.

Roswell, New Mexico

This show is surprisingly very good. I say "surprisingly"because it seems a bit cheesy at first glance. However the scenario is actually really interesting and the characters are all loveable.
I was highly exhausted to see comments about "politics ruining the show", though. First of all... Everything is political. But also, the way this show talks about human rights just makes it more rich, more interesting. It's very sad to rate a show that low just because your poor feelings were hurt when you realized the show was trying to make you think about other human beings :(

Summertime

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. As a French wlw, I don't know a lot of lgbt movies that were made for and by French people so I was happy to discover this one! I grew up with very few movies to represent me and all of them were from foreign countries...
The acting was very natural and I loved seeing a depiction of the feminist movement of the 70's (though it's really focused on white feminism but seeing that it's about two white women, it's not super surprising for the times).

I would have loved to see even more of the feminist fights and the end was, like too many lgbtq movie, ambiguous. It's obviously a happy ending but why must lgbt couple always be separated? I wish we had at least a mention of them meeting or smth like that

All in all, a very nice viewing that I definitely recommend!

iZombie: 5x13 All's Well That Ends Well

A very disappointing ending, I must say. The fact that they killed Michelle just so Clive would get his perfect nuclear family is utterly disgusting. They could have written anyone else dying instead, any other officer, but of course they chose her. Gross.
The rest is just... a bit weird, a bit bland, a bit confusing. I don't understand how they keep pushing that narrative that a cure would solve everything since obviously, ton of zombies must still be trying to get revenge/tons of humans must still have anti-zombies feelings.
( Also I keep being put off by this thing of turning people into zombies because they're sick. Like, the children will never grow up? You get stuck living immortal lives? It doesn't sound appealing at all.)
Liv and Lilywhite ending up together is also disappointing. It felt rushed and too easy.

It's generally a fun show but I don't think it depict bdsm pretty well. There's several moments where the consent of some characters was totally overlooked :(

A Knight's Tale

I saw someone saying that after saying Paul Bettany in this movie, it was impossible to not want Vision to live in Infinity war and now that i've seen this movie, i get it. He's simply awesome.

The Feels

I can't believe I've never heard about this movie before seeing it on Netflix!! It deals very well of the sensitive subject that is orgasm/expectations about one's sexual life, while showing different women's relationship with sex. While doing all of that, it also depict an established lesbian relationship, which is so refreshing! Movies about homophobia are great, but it also so nice to have a subject about other aspects of a lesbian relationship.
All the different relationships between the characters felt very natural, and I loved how each character was humanized.

Age of Youth

I really recommend this drama. At first, it really seems like it will be a normal slice of life drama but the plot involves a lot of really serious themes too. I really enjoyed how this drama talked about various subjects but without necessarily resolving the problems of the characters. The 1st season was really enjoyable but I preferred the 2nd season, especially because of Ji-won. Some things that we learn about her in the 1st season became really important for her plot in the 2nd season and it was done really nicely.
Be careful to watch the episodes until the end! There's usually a scene after the teaser for the next episode and it allows the viewers to have more details about the characters' personalities.

I really hope there will be a 3rd season because there's a lot of things unresolved, and a mysterious scene during one of the last episode. But the strength of this drama is also that they know how to let some problems and situations unresolved without it looking like bad writing or a mistake; it's just part of everyone's life.

Lemonade Mouth

I only watched this because Hayley Kiyoko is in this movie and I must say, this was really, REALLY american. Really Disney-ish and so really predictable but I guess a little bit fun? I'm aware I'm not the public targeted anyways so... ^-^
But it was funny how everything in the movie and the promotions pictures tried to push Olivia as the center while Stella should actually be the main character (but she's not white and this is Hollywood I guess?).

Out of Africa

Wonderful landscapes and acting. Meryl Streep is amazing and touching.
The colonial atmosphere was embarrassing at times but it's better than the book.

Mortal Engines

The universe is very interesting but the plot is super cliché. I also found it difficult to connect with the characters. They just weren't very complex... The humoristic lines (with the minions, for ex) fell flat too. I'm not sure where they were going with them ? It didn't fit the overall mood at all.
All in all, it's pretty bland but not so awful that I would tell people to stay away

The Imperial Coroner

The story lacked a bit in the writing and acting areas, combined with an obviously low budget (the scene with the fake river was hilarious) but it also deserves to be praised for it's no-nonsense approach to romance and friendships. It was very lovely how the two main characters and their friends respected each other. They could have easily went down the road of a love triangle with Leng Yue, Chu chu and Xiao Jinyu but they didn't and it was far better for it.
Overall, it's pretty cute, but with a lot of untapped potential (probably because of its low budget).

The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society

I remember loving the book as a child, so I find myself quite disappointed by the movie. Lily James is not a particularly good fit for the role, and she has no chemistry with Michiel Huisman.
Also the nazi guy was good because he helped a cow give birth?... Nevermind about all the jewish people who might have been killed by him then, I guess.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

The kid is so freaky, why is everyone in this movie acting like she doesn't look like a child version of a barbie? Seriously that's disturbing. Just as disturbing as the books btw, what with Jacob's gross 'impregnation' (hello, this child will never be able to grow up alone and choose a partner!! this isn't cute!) and them believing living forever in a gift (?????). Bella is just as mediocre as before except she can now hide her lack of personality behind her spectacular gifts and Edward still has the personality of an oyster, and seems unable to act as a parent. Also nice pedophilia joke about Jacob being Edward's 'son-in-law'. So funny! We're not AT ALL talking about a child there!

Alex Strangelove

I don't know how i feel about this movie... Tbh Alex was a total jerk at some moments.
I wished the story would have been about him discovering his bisexuality instead. Some parts seems to hint at that but then no? I think there's some inconsistance in the story-line about that
I totally wonder if this was written by someone straight because that whole thing about "why don't just come out? my cousin of 16 has come out" and other lines from that type are just... so straight. They really seems to think lgbt people not coming out is a matter of will...
But generally it's a cute movie as long as you can handle the awkwardness of the main character

Also the guy playing Elliot plays in The Gay and Wondrous life of Caleb Gallo, a queer serie on youtube that i totally recommend!

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

I started this drama expecting the usual romance drama but i didn't expect it to be that homophobic. The sexism and psychophobia were unsurprising and expected but the homophobia... There's the usual straight guy who's mistaken to be gay and the homoerotic situations who are depicted as "funny" (because of course there can be no attraction between two "healthy" guys...) but there's also offensive comments and a character that was obviously solely created to be the pitiful and ridiculous gay guy with a one-sided romance.

The plot itself is nice and the chemistry between the main couple is fantastic; Bong soon and Minhyuk are both so cute and charismatic. I also loved the best friend of Bong soon. She's really expressive and pretty! However it's really not enough to forget about the constant mockery of mlm...

The Heirs

I'm a little torn on what to think of this drama. On one hand, it overuse clichés (rich & poor lovers, back-hugs, evil mother-in-law...) and has a really bad plot and on the other hand, it's still a little bit fun (if not taken seriously) and all the actors and actresses seems at ease with each other.
It's really frustrating sometimes : the heroine is always silenced by everyone, she doesn't even seems interested by the main character, they both have nothing in common, the main character is not really bright and act egoistically, he always smashes lips ("kiss") with Eun Sung without asking her or putting a mood and the attempts at putting more depth in the plot fails tragically.
However, some of the supporting characters are really funny (Lee Bona and her boyfriend for ex) and the length is enough that I wasn't completely bored.

We don't see enough movies like this! As a French person, I really recommend watching this movie if you want to discover more about France than just the mainstream image :)

Editing this (22/07/18) to say that years after writing this, I grew up and learned and realizes now that some parts are really cliché and might show a negative image of people living in the suburbs. The sad thing is that it shows the main heroine struggling without really acknowledging the main problem which is the french society itself (build by and for white people). The writer and director is a white woman so it's not overly surprising.
If you're interested in a movie focused on black women, i heard that "Ouvrir la voix" by Amandine Gay, was much better :)

Love Between Fairy and Devil

It was long at times, and a little inconsistent but overall a pleasant watching. The main couple were so in love, it was lovely to see. I also really liked the character of Rong Hao. His motivation during the whole drama was so clear and understandable even as it lead him to loose his innocence. His relationship with his master was truly beautiful, and I think the ending they got was perfect . However, what's up with romantic dramas ending up so abruptly every time? Can't we get some time to enjoy seeing the couple in love now that they've went through all of the difficult times? This is very frustrating..
I also didn't really like the 2nd couple, who seemed to be there just to fill a gap. Even more frustrating when considering that Chang Heng and Danyin had such good chemistry, especially at the end of the show. Them ending together would have been a hundred times better imo

LOL (Laughing Out Loud)

Honestly it's not particularly a good movie. I was a teenager when it was released and I thought it was not very relatable. But looking back, it does show a little bit of the aesthetics of those times

Women at War (1939-1945)

Interesting, but I think it would have been better to be more detailed about some people or events. It felt like the narrator expected me to already know everything, and recognize the small hints that were given from time to time.
I also felt like women were continuously brought back to their roles as mothers. A bit ironic, considering that this documentary is supposed to focused on all women. What about the ones who didn't fit in this ideal to begin with ?

Love Me If You Dare

I can't say I disliked watching this movie but I'm definitely very puzzled about what I'm supposed to take from this. I thought it was supposed to be a romantic comedy, which I guess is true except that the two main characters are absolutely awful to each other and to other people around them. At the very least, it's interesting to watch Cotillard & Canet in their early stage as actors...
