Marie Antoinette

I actually quite enjoyed it. The main interest of that movie is of course the bling-bling side of Versailles. I don't agree with everything in that movie and the characters were all rather superficially describe except the royal couple, in my opinion but I liked the performance and the atmosphere.

Summertime

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. As a French wlw, I don't know a lot of lgbt movies that were made for and by French people so I was happy to discover this one! I grew up with very few movies to represent me and all of them were from foreign countries...
The acting was very natural and I loved seeing a depiction of the feminist movement of the 70's (though it's really focused on white feminism but seeing that it's about two white women, it's not super surprising for the times).

I would have loved to see even more of the feminist fights and the end was, like too many lgbtq movie, ambiguous. It's obviously a happy ending but why must lgbt couple always be separated? I wish we had at least a mention of them meeting or smth like that

All in all, a very nice viewing that I definitely recommend!

iZombie: 5x13 All's Well That Ends Well

A very disappointing ending, I must say. The fact that they killed Michelle just so Clive would get his perfect nuclear family is utterly disgusting. They could have written anyone else dying instead, any other officer, but of course they chose her. Gross.
The rest is just... a bit weird, a bit bland, a bit confusing. I don't understand how they keep pushing that narrative that a cure would solve everything since obviously, ton of zombies must still be trying to get revenge/tons of humans must still have anti-zombies feelings.
( Also I keep being put off by this thing of turning people into zombies because they're sick. Like, the children will never grow up? You get stuck living immortal lives? It doesn't sound appealing at all.)
Liv and Lilywhite ending up together is also disappointing. It felt rushed and too easy.

A Knight's Tale

I saw someone saying that after saying Paul Bettany in this movie, it was impossible to not want Vision to live in Infinity war and now that i've seen this movie, i get it. He's simply awesome.

The Feels

I can't believe I've never heard about this movie before seeing it on Netflix!! It deals very well of the sensitive subject that is orgasm/expectations about one's sexual life, while showing different women's relationship with sex. While doing all of that, it also depict an established lesbian relationship, which is so refreshing! Movies about homophobia are great, but it also so nice to have a subject about other aspects of a lesbian relationship.
All the different relationships between the characters felt very natural, and I loved how each character was humanized.

Lemonade Mouth

I only watched this because Hayley Kiyoko is in this movie and I must say, this was really, REALLY american. Really Disney-ish and so really predictable but I guess a little bit fun? I'm aware I'm not the public targeted anyways so... ^-^
But it was funny how everything in the movie and the promotions pictures tried to push Olivia as the center while Stella should actually be the main character (but she's not white and this is Hollywood I guess?).

Out of Africa

Wonderful landscapes and acting. Meryl Streep is amazing and touching.
The colonial atmosphere was embarrassing at times but it's better than the book.

I could feel that they were good ideas behind this movie but the realisation of them is... very poor.

The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society

I remember loving the book as a child, so I find myself quite disappointed by the movie. Lily James is not a particularly good fit for the role, and she has no chemistry with Michiel Huisman.
Also the nazi guy was good because he helped a cow give birth?... Nevermind about all the jewish people who might have been killed by him then, I guess.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

The kid is so freaky, why is everyone in this movie acting like she doesn't look like a child version of a barbie? Seriously that's disturbing. Just as disturbing as the books btw, what with Jacob's gross 'impregnation' (hello, this child will never be able to grow up alone and choose a partner!! this isn't cute!) and them believing living forever in a gift (?????). Bella is just as mediocre as before except she can now hide her lack of personality behind her spectacular gifts and Edward still has the personality of an oyster, and seems unable to act as a parent. Also nice pedophilia joke about Jacob being Edward's 'son-in-law'. So funny! We're not AT ALL talking about a child there!

Alex Strangelove

I don't know how i feel about this movie... Tbh Alex was a total jerk at some moments.
I wished the story would have been about him discovering his bisexuality instead. Some parts seems to hint at that but then no? I think there's some inconsistance in the story-line about that
I totally wonder if this was written by someone straight because that whole thing about "why don't just come out? my cousin of 16 has come out" and other lines from that type are just... so straight. They really seems to think lgbt people not coming out is a matter of will...
But generally it's a cute movie as long as you can handle the awkwardness of the main character

Also the guy playing Elliot plays in The Gay and Wondrous life of Caleb Gallo, a queer serie on youtube that i totally recommend!

We don't see enough movies like this! As a French person, I really recommend watching this movie if you want to discover more about France than just the mainstream image :)

Editing this (22/07/18) to say that years after writing this, I grew up and learned and realizes now that some parts are really cliché and might show a negative image of people living in the suburbs. The sad thing is that it shows the main heroine struggling without really acknowledging the main problem which is the french society itself (build by and for white people). The writer and director is a white woman so it's not overly surprising.
If you're interested in a movie focused on black women, i heard that "Ouvrir la voix" by Amandine Gay, was much better :)

It's definitely not the best superhero movie but it definitely deserve better than the ratings it got.

Women at War (1939-1945)

Interesting, but I think it would have been better to be more detailed about some people or events. It felt like the narrator expected me to already know everything, and recognize the small hints that were given from time to time.
I also felt like women were continuously brought back to their roles as mothers. A bit ironic, considering that this documentary is supposed to focused on all women. What about the ones who didn't fit in this ideal to begin with ?

Love Me If You Dare

I can't say I disliked watching this movie but I'm definitely very puzzled about what I'm supposed to take from this. I thought it was supposed to be a romantic comedy, which I guess is true except that the two main characters are absolutely awful to each other and to other people around them. At the very least, it's interesting to watch Cotillard & Canet in their early stage as actors...

We the Animals

I think one of the main reasons I didn't particularly enjoy this movie was that, in my country, it was branded as the "new Moonlight". And it definitely isn't. I was floored by how different those two movies were (and I blame homophobia a little for making people thinks those two movies are completely alike).
However, it is a very interesting movie, though probably not made for me. I graded it a 6 because I didn't truly enjoy it but in no way does it mean that it's a bad movie. Another person made a very good comment so I won't elaborate more.

Mansfield Park

A really nice movie, much better than the 2007 version! I felt that it was a really good depiction of women's situations at that time. I just hoped against everything that Sir Bertram would drop dead, especially after the (unsurprising) discovery of his actions towards slaves. It did feel a bit strange to show how awful this character is and not have him face his actions but I guess it would have been too different that the original version.

It's really not my type of movie but it was funny and managed to avoid the usual clichés that this type of story usually rely on. It felt pretty realistic

ManSuang

It's a good movie overall because the acting and the cinematography are great but I felt that the scenario had some weaknesses. There's a lot of characters that we barely see, certain things felt a bit rushed and it left me with many questions that I feel should have been answered.
I still definitely recommend watching it, though !

The Wolf's Call

Good acting and interesting plot but I find the ending to be a bit unbelievable and I really, really don't understand why they broke the rhythm of the movie to push some useless romance with a female character that has no personality and is obviously only here to fit the old and overused "the hero get the girl" cliché.

A Monster in Paris

Well, this was super disappointing. I've always liked the songs from this movie and it looked so cute, I had high expectations. In the end, I couldn't even watch all of it, because I was so bored. Maybe I'm too old, and I would have liked this better as a child

A Story of One's Own

This documentary tries (and succeeds) to question the decisions of French families to adopt children from other countries.
Very thought-provoking. I loved how it centered the voices of adopted adults, and would sometimes draw parallels between those stories and other older archives.
I can only regret, however, the images of dead Rwandan bodies when talking about the Tutsi genocide. It felt gratuitous.

Your Name Engraved Herein

This movie was good overall but it was sometimes a bit complicated to understand the links between some scenes. I also don't understand the point of the shower scene : it doesn't look like it was consensual and I don't really see what it add to the plot.

I wish that they had ended up together! The ending isn't bad, but I think it could have been lovely to see them trying to start smth new, even if only a friendship.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

It's not a bad movie but like.. the bad guy has a big nose, is named Serguei and has a russian/east european accent... I wish we would see less of that. Same for the message about anxiety that is borderline anti-therapy.

The Death & Life of John F. Donovan

The theme itself was interesting (being forced to stay in the closet because of the industry you work in) but the whole movie was... off. They made it to be more of an indivual thing (you choose to come out or not) instead of a bigger issue based on heteronormativity.
Kit Harington's acting was great, same for Jared Keeso who play his brother but everyone else seemed to just lack something. Big parts of the plot just didn't make a lot of sense and I got really bored to the point of sighing outloud which I usually never do in movie theaters (to be polite to the other viewers).
I did however really enjoy John's relationship with his brother.

Funan

A really beautiful movie. The violence is never shown (except on one occasion) but yet we feel everything: the fear, the anger, the humiliations... The story is very simply told and yet the complexity of the victims and the villains is very well shown. I'm writing this comment a few hours after watching the movie and I still want to cry, especially after learning that it's inspired by the mother of the director.
However it was a bit disappointing that the original version is in French. I think it add a layer that prevent the viewer for getting totally immerged in the story.
