[5.8/10] It’s funny, this episode basically flipped my expectations from having watched this show as a child. I remembered the writing being good, and the animation being pretty bad. Maybe the show changes its trajectory after the pilot, but on rewatch, the reverse is true.
The animation is very 1990s T.V., and it’s certainly janky in lots of places, but there’s a fluidity and sense of motion to how the characters are drawn and how they move that makes the action feel more artistic and real (so much as an arachnid-infused teenager fighting a giant reptile can) that it has any right to. And while the computerized backgrounds are quaint by today’s standards and feel a little out of place, I appreciate the ambition of what the show’s trying to do with them.
The writing, on the other hand, is pretty weak. The show has the good sense to start us off in medias res, without an immediate origin story, but still feels compelled to setup the world and the characters and conflict. That’s admirable enough, but the episode uses Peter’s voiceover to deliver a lot of exposition about the premise of the show and the immediate conflict.
There’s a tidy enough adventure to establish the basics -- Peter is a photographer, bossed around by J. Jonah Jameson, in competition with Eddie Brock, and trying to scrape up funds for his motherly Aunt May. But everyone speaks in the broadest, most melodramatic tones, and bends over backwards to speak with unnecessary expository detail.
That goes especially for the actual Lizard story here. The idea of Curt Connors is an interesting “man inside the beast” tale that superhero stories do well (see also, The Hulk), but the execution here is so overwrought. Maybe there’d be more intrigue if I didn’t already know the Connors/Lizard connection so there’d be more of a reveal, but the episode makes it pretty obvious. Again, the way their fight is blocked and animated is laudable, but the actual story is just going through the motions.
I’m watching this show as a sort of slanted prelude to the climactic third and fourth Avengers films, and so it’s nice to hear the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Defenders, and The Hulk name-checked here. But this is an inauspicious start to the series I have fond memories of from childhood.
OMG!!! April made me laugh so much.
I think Jackson is gonna bring drama over this.
Arizona reaction at the end was hilarious.
I have a feeling Alex is gonna suffer a lot with this case.
Amelia felt it too. The new guy is funny but also an ass.
Ben suffered a lot, he just realize he's not a doctor anymore.
The new spinoff looks good. We have to wait and see how this goes.
That shocking reveal at 22:30! Here's me thinking she was just a typical woman and then...bam!!
This episodes gave me so many different emotions. What great story telling and actions sequences, absolutely amazing!
lol at all those people that said the animation was weak in the first episode. Where are they now? What an absolutely beautiful episode from start to finish. I need to watch it again.
Also that magneto comeback was so hard. “yet so many allow their leaders to be terrorists”
I also loved the hug between Enid and Wednesday at the end. Their friendship was one of my favorite parts of the series.
Damn, I find it hard to get through an episode because I have to pause it so often to grab music from it
when steven called avatar an anime i just
While the show is good, the fact that Pamela didn’t have a say and did not sign off on this series (which I only read about after already finishing the show) really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Especially since a big theme in this story is how she kept being exploited. Really just doesn’t sit right with me that this show would be made without her having a say.
(Just adding that I only found out about this AFTER I had already finished the show)
This is growing on me. The little ecchi notes are cute, but Gojo is adorable, and Marin is too. I like that he’s into a traditional art, and she’s into something ‘modern’, and they are awfully cute with each other. I don’t really go for ecchi stories, but this is definitely growing on me. Currently one of only three anime I’m tracking this season.
fyi if anyone is about to watch this, DO NOT watch it right after or while eating. i ate like seven meatballs before watching and hoooooly shit, regretting that decision sdghfjkgjhjgk.
overall, it was alright. the visual aspects + performances are great as always, but some scenes did not need to be as long as they were.
Pretty good show overall, I liked it better than expected for a romance drama. I was very confused by the ending, I'm not sure if it got cancelled or not, I'm going to check the manga 'cause the anime definitely left things unfinished.
Honestly I did not expect anything about this drama, I just randomly looked-up for something similar to Go Back Coupe!! and it got me hooked. I was watching the most depressing and irritating show D-Day and this show has salvaged my weekend!!
I think this is one of those dramas where you sit back and say "Wow, so this is also a way a Korean Drama can be made". I mean, don't get me wrong, there were some kdrama cliches in Marriage Not Dating but nothing was overbearing. In fact, I loved those cliches too. And it was an extremely refreshing romantic-comedy.
I admit the description for this drama is cliche but when you get into the drama itself, it was so refreshing. In most romcom kdramas, I usually know or my expectations were right on what will happen next but Marriage Not Dating is just pure surprise. They made the cliche worth watching, you don't even know what to expect.
The plot was very interesting throughout. A guy wants to stay single while his family (mostly his mom) threatens to get him married (This is My First Life!! copied from here) . So he decides to make Jang Mi his fake girlfriend as he knows his family would never approve of her as their daughter-in-law. The funniest ride starts right there at their first meeting. I loved how they started every episode with some fast-forwarded scene that made you go, "did I miss an episode or something?". It generally bought guessing game from Reply Series back and made it more interesting !! even if we knew we are falling in to a K-Drama Troupe/Cliche .
The actors are so perfect esp the main leads. I already forget the last time I root for the main couple so much. Props to Han Geu-ru and Yeon Woo Jin, it's like this drama its tailor-made for them. Though the side characters Jin-woon and Sun-hwa did not appeal to me, Jung Min (Hoon Dong), and Kim Hae Sook are so great I kind of forget the 2nd leads.
The characters were all amazing. I haven't loved a female lead in a long time the way I loved Jang Mi. She was hilarious and had a kind heart. I mean, sure, she got a little clingy at times but that was funny too. Ki Tae was great. Out of all their friends, Hoon Dong was the best! I didn't care much for second leads, which was pretty much a bonus because I hate having second lead syndrome. Both the families were great. I think Ki Tae's mom's character was the most interesting. Sometimes I loved her and there were times I really hated her (can't believe Jang Mi never disliked her). But there were also times I pitied her. By the end of the drama I realized she was the character I became most emotionally invested in. I loved her and loved how she grew as a person. In fact I loved the growth of every character in this drama. I think when it comes to creating beautiful characters, TVN is the best. Whether it's the characters from Reply 1997/1994 , they all impressed us and it had nothing to do with fancy celebrities but rather with the script.
The music is great. "Love Lane" and "Stop The Love Now" have been a part of my daily jam for a while now. It's a cute, cheerful OST overall. Moreover I loved the funny background music (people who have watched this would know what I'm talking about). I think I haven't loved any bgm this much since the "meh" for Sam Chun Po in Reply 1994. Hahaha. I hated the second lead music though it made his advances more irritating !!
It's really hard to stand out in a sea of romantic comedy dramas but this one managed to be memorable because it actually managed to be funny and romantic until the end. The story didn't have any melodramatic moments. From the writing to the directing and of course the acting, everything was just pitch perfect. Everything was in perfect harmony with each other. There were some flaws but they were too minor and not enough to derail the whole thing. I would definitely watch it again.
Overall I would recommend this drama for the slightly-different but cute love story and the hilarious family situations. Definitely worth a watch and a re-watch!
Modern Romance is a group of 30 minute shows that could be considered 'Chick Flicks" if they'd been dragged out to the customary 90 minutes. At 30 minutes they are perfect for telling their stories. Each story is different, some are better than others, but overall it's a very enjoyable TV series. Well written and well-acted throughout.
Ep 1 - Very good,
Ep 2 - Very good
Ep 3 - OK
Ep 4 - Meh

Entire season as a whole - solid 8.5/10
Catherine was outta line man.. Now I see why Avery be telling her all the time to stay outta his business/stop meddling. Wow. Anyways glad the sister chiefs (mer, mags, and Amelia) are back at it.

What an absolutely insane episode. This is such an incredible show. The cut to black and Rogue's final line absolutely broke me, and I've still got the new bad batch episode to watch. Wednesday night animation nights are turning out to be so much more traumatic than I expected.
100% FIRE! I can't even review this because so MANY things happened in this ONE episode. I thought this was going to be a little love triangle(s) episode but this? If you've watch the episode you know what I mean.
Wow, what an episode! I'm speechless.
fucking hell we have NEVER been more back. Peak tv from top to bottom. I laughed, I cried my soul was destroyed and we're only on episode 5.
One of the best shows to date. This episode was EPIC!
That was awesome, I didn't expect it.
This was really good... odd at times, but very good.
The graveyard 'sex scene' was stupid, unnecessary and could have been removed, but everything else was good. Nice sorta twist at the end. Good soundtrack too
