The central conceit of the film may seem gimmicky and has been done before, but this is a brilliantly constructed sequence of tense set pieces. There is a palpable tension straight from the start and it works so well because the filmmakers drip feed little bits of visual information, but equally force the audience into trying to establish themselves what the rules are and leaving you uncertain throughout. Part of how well it works is that they are not afraid to telegraph certain events that you know are going to cause problems and there is as much tension in waiting for the inevitable as there is in how the characters will deal with each situation. There are a couple of moments that feel a little like the rules are being bent slightly but they are not enough to spoil what is a very effective horror.
At first I couldn't understand how this silence would work for a whole movie and keep me gripped, but boy was I wrong. By the end i was totally invested. Great silent acting by all.
Full disclosure - I am a wimp. I do not do horror flicks because my imagination is so much more terrifying than any movie can reproduce and even the trailer clips of this movie were terrifying. But, I was also intrigued, and it was nominated for an Oscar. I am so glad I took a deep breath and sat down to watch this. This is brilliantly written. The performances were totally captivating and the sound wizards were on their A-game. At one point, in the midst of all the painstaking quiet, there was a noise in my room and I involuntarily reached out to silence it, so as to not be heard. For other wimps, it is the tension that grabs you in this movie, not blood, gore or even the monsters but the slow, sheer build up of intense suspense. Well done John Krasinski et al. I give this film a 9 (superb) out of 10. (Now I'm going to quietly go hide under my covers.) [SciFi Thriller]
What a wonderfully made movie!!!! Emily Blunt was great as usual and Kramaski who directed and wrote the script was amazing.. His acting was great.. The suspense was amazing!!!! The creature was a savage!!! Overall great film
I loved this movie. It has a very "zombie-esque" feel with some very intense and thrilling scenes. Fortunately, it doesn't try to jump scare all the time and instead focuses on the story. I love how this is a post-apocalypse movie, but with actually intelligent characters. Nobody doing stupid things to get themselves killed, instead we saw a family who had planned to survive. We see the struggles and plans for the family, who change how they live - but never give up on why. This is a really well made movie and definitely worth a watch.
It's too bad this film is this underrated here. I have seen one of the greatest acting performances in this movie, not to mention the heavy message, conclusion and content it has. And the fact, that it is a true story. I have to say that I was a great fan of the first half of the movie, but it is necessary to set everything up what is next. And as the events escalate, the film becomes really impressive and will have a great effect on everyone, I can guarantee that.
didn't know and never would have guessed Clint Eastwood had a finger in the pie until I saw the credits
even though I am open minded enough, not to deny the possibility of some kind of afterlife, the way the movie tried to transport it did not work for me yawn
another 2 hours I'll never get back...
BOOOOOORRRING!!!
They used 2 hours to tell nothing - seriously in this flick nothing happens at all.
A real nail biter, edge of your seat survival thriller movie. Brilliant performance by Kate Siegel!
I love how Maddie wasn't saved by anyone but herself. How much balls she had, truly badass and clever thinking. Though she had two earlier windows to kill her attacker, still, fierce, badass woman with true survival instincts kicking in.
It aged pretty good, no CG special effects or cheap thrills, just horror of isolation.
Still one of my favorites. Just the ideas it brings up and plays with is enough alone to forever cement this as a classic. I STILL chew on those ideas. But on top of that it's got great action and effects, that while groundbreaking for the time, actually still holds up pretty damn well. It's a ton a themes, ideas, styles and references thrown in a blender to make a damn near perfect sci-fi movie.
Over 20 years old, The Matrix was such a significant moment in cinema in a year that Star Wars was supposed to reign supreme with the release of the first prequel. Watching it now, it still stands as a hugely entertaining blend of martial arts action, science-fiction dystopia and philosophical musings on dreams vs reality and fate vs free-will. Its influences are far reaching that even at the time it lacked originality to audiences familiar with them. Yet it is the blend of all these ideas coupled with a script that draws the audience into the world gradually before letting loose with superbly choreographed action sequences that make this stand the test of time.
Still one heck of a movie that doesn't have to hide behind many that came after. It showed you can have both: good action and a deep story with a meaning.
This is another tough one for me to rate. I loved the beginning and the end. I had trouble with the cacophony of the middle.
But, even so, I recognise the brilliance of the writing, the talent of the cast, and the complexity of the story. Brilliant SciFi/Romance premise, difficult to execute. It was nominated for 2 Oscars: one for Kate Winslet, and the one for that for which it won - Best Writing, Original Screenplay (2005).
What puzzled me for most of the movie, was how it managed to attract so talented a cast, but, by the end of the movie, I understood the unexpected depths there were to be mined.
I have to confess that as a Canadian I have always been embarrassed by my dislike, of what the world credits as comedic genius, of Jim Carey movies (he is a Canadian export). What stunned me about this movie, from the beginning, was how good a dramatic actor Jim is (who knew? I even found him handsome, once again, who knew?). And Kate Winslet as an erratic grunge, that was a hard sell. I didn't like the character Clementine throughout the movie, which made it hard to keep watching, especially when, at the centre of it, this is a love story. But, then, at the end of the film, her character resolves, bringing unexpected depths (thus the Oscar nomination). This movie was throwing inconsistencies at me from the beginning, and I was intrigued, irritated, bored, and finally, moved.
So, I'm sitting here, looking at the rating, as it taunts me to make a proclamation. So, I give it a 7.5 (brilliant in spasms) out of 10. I'll not watch it again, but, it does have something about it that is worthy of an attempt - it may be exactly what you were looking for.
What a powerfull movie.A truly masterpiece.Destiny is what it is and we can't change anything. 10/10!
such a beautiful movie, whoever says it overrated go to the hell
Gallons of tears that were shed, but it was worth it. Freakin' onions man.
I didn't cried, you did!
TOTAL GARBAGE.
I never expect Netflix would produce this such movie.
I only watch this because of Ryuk.
I just have to say this is the WORST ADAPTATION ever !
Very bad adaptation very bad movie
It was very good and I enjoyed it, but disappointed by the ending. I understand that homosexual men is still a very under represented in media. I can’t complain about the plot because these are our stories, our truth, but I wished for a bisexual ending or even a pansexual ending, it could have been really wild and been a asexual ending. But nope, plain gay. It was better then a lot of gay movies in recent years, with the exception of Moonlight and Love, Simon which were masterpieces, but I just wanted better.
it was kinda hard to watch this movie because of my past experience, though the story itself was beautifully done. I've never cried so much since Kimi No Na wa.
This awesome movie moved me. It made me cry. I felt sad in the mid and was happy in the end. I was hoping them to be couple in the end. But that's good too.
Watched with Kel and T. This was really fun, I really liked it. The premise was hilarious, I really enjoyed the relationship with her sisters and dad. Slightly derivative with the whole "fake dating" to make another jealous story, but it was done really well.
I felt really bad for the neighbor kid, but I think his story was handled really smart.
T says there's a series of books following the main character. Not sure exactly how they'd extend this in a way that doesn't undermine the relationship in this movie... Then again, it's not like she should only have one boyfriend in her life... It could be interesting to see how she dealt with another guy trying to win her over.
this was cute!! even if it played with the same old stereotypes, Lara Jean and Peter were really sweet.
8/10
I have loved this film. It's so cute. It's like a classic adolescent story but lovely.
AND NOAH IS AMAZING
I am glad that people have the courage and ability to make movies like this. If you want a straight-ahead hollywood story then avoid this film at all costs. If you want something that makes you work a little bit for something that is beautiful then give this a look.
I've watched this movie a few times now. I think the best thing to tell you all is... do not start to watch it with any preconceived ideas or expectations. Yes, some may say WTF is this, but the metaphors make you really appreciate what it's about. I don't really want to say much about it because, well... everyone will react differently. Enjoy :)
This film has a lot going on just in the idea of it. I'm not sure what to call it. Maybe physical fantasy fiction. Swiss Army Man to me sounds like it could be about a man in the Swiss Army. However, it is about a man being used as a utility tool much like a Swiss Army knife. It was most definitely a unique movie.
I really like the style of the movie. Through the scenes in the movie where there are new "moves" there is a comic book effect that really added to the comedic sense of the story. The film was edited really well, welcoming an even pace and additional but small effects that helped the humor and story. It really hit the point.
The story itself was absolutely ridiculous and it ended up being hilarious rather than the easy disaster that it could have been. A dead man helping a "lost" man "survive" in the woods by a coast is a weird concept. Then having the dead man talk and become a tool for the man to use was just crazy to watch. Then during the film I sat there wondering if this was actually happening or if he just lost his mind. Well, I had lots of questions in general. How did he get there? Why did he decide to carry this dead guy around the woods rather than burning or burying him? And many more questions. It was a really good story that kept me interested and was able to make me laugh.
Now, what I didn't like in this movie. The only thing that really put me off this movie was the obsessive thoughts that the main character has about a secondary character. His obsession pushed a lot of the movie from one point to another and it very much didn't feel right. If they had found another motivator to push the story, it would have been perfect.
Overall, this is a great, hilarious, and unique film. I would recommend watching it. Just don't start thinking that obsessing over a girl, or any person, to move your life along is ok! Still, a great movie from start to end.
A movie so freaking strange that it messed up my mind. A movie so strange that it ended up being good! Movie that deals with your personal problems and how you can actually fix it and becomes better at least in your fantasy (I could be wrong, but this is what I understood from the movie!). It is not a movie for everyone and trust me if you are expecting a logical movie, stay away from this but instead if you are the person who can accept imaginative story-line, then watch this movie. The movie will surely mess up your mind towards the end and make you think! 7/10
