I didn't really inform myself what I was gonna watch so my first thought was "oh. shit.. a Chinese kids movie... that's probably going to suck" but I don't think this has to hide to the big Western players in the field. Most noteable (to me) was certainly the 3d animation. Besides the odd face designs and some scenes involving water this not only looks really good but is damn near photo realistic in the lion dance scenes (I really would love to see a behind the scenes of that).
While the movie is certainly goofy at times it surprisingly doesn't shy away from pointing towards the poor working conditions in the country (in whatever form that is allowed anyways). The conclusion offered is certainly a spectacle with the visuals but also makes good use of music so yeah, my bias was very wrong.
It always bothered me a bit that the Chinese animation studios are eating away at the Japanese anime market already (which is relying on Korea, etc. too) but if this is the level of 3DCG they can offer then that bundled with good stories certainly makes them a force to be reckoned with even more.
Like me in a relationship: pretty entertaining if you don't ask too much of it.
After Searching, Missing is the second in the anthology of multimedia found footage films, where the entire film is set only on smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices.
While there's nothing terribly new in this outing, the formula still holds up really well and there's enough excitement to move the movie along at a good pace.
My only issue is, Sev Ohanian (co-writer and producer of both this film and Searching), loved my review of Searching so much (honestly, it's so thorough I freaked out the editor--Google "123wtf searching review" if you don't believe me) that he reached out to me early last December and promised he was going to drop an Easter egg reference to me in the film. Well, I watched this as closely as I could and I didn't see anything so... Sev?:wink:
I was fairly surprised by the brave ending... which had no backpedalling to status quo. That is truly unlike Disney. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier I'm looking at you
Plot and themes of parenthood and cost of gas/oil for the environment were a bit too easy, but at the same time were worked in really well. I enjoyed all the family characters. For greater impression cartoon lacks... plotholes and one or two big mistakes in world building or character's screentime distribution. Surprisingly, lack of mistakes leaves behind more plain impression than with let say Onward that wasn't polished as well as this one.
I guess, I was already heavily indoctrinated into basic human rights support so I only expected to find complaints about two things:
- too much PDA for conservative folks;
- cheap sympathy with the dog;
Nevermind.
What if "Groundhog Day" were a late-80s German gangster thriller with a pumping techno soundtrack, a nerve-shredding adrenaline-fuelled premise and a few surprises thrown in? That's "Lola Rennt" for you! :)
Like trying to get the kids to go back to bed and leave you alone... then realizing you don't have kids.
The movie is the story of a group of children who discover they have special powers when they're together, and of the one, troubled boy who decides to use this power for bad.
The Innocents is the bastard child of other films that led the way (notably Village of the Damned and The Omen) but, fortunately, has learned from their mistakes and gone on to greater heights.
Written to perfection and directed with a good deal of suspense by Eskil Vogt, The Innocents goes harder than any American film with children would dare go and will leave bite marks on the viewer's memory long after the film has ended.
Mia Goth’s monologue in the third act is chilling, absolutely chilling in a way that’s both vulnerable and eerie. Between this, X, and the upcoming MaXXXine I think it’s safe to say Goth is already a horror icon.
Koreeda neither judges his characters nor does he sell their vulnerability, going as far as to obscure their emotions about to burst out into the open. Broken people build a family to be a little less broken. Endearing and tragic at the same time, Broker is perhaps the unadulterated form of forgiveness.
Such a perfect romance movie! It's so nice to see how fun d/s is for the two main characters. They managed to make it sexy but also pretty entertaining.
I'm very surprised because I genuinely didn't think it would be that fun to watch
Good stupid fun. Shame they didn't get to watch any music videos though.
This film is rated C for Cute :3
Great disaster film! Hope this never happens in real life :flushed: nice special effects too!
The plot kept me interested throughout the whole movie, with a good twist, the fighting was decent and I was very charmed by Miku Martineau her performance. And it’s small things that make me love it: the way Japanese characters speak Japanese to each other (I hate when movies make non native English speaking characters talk English to each other) how you hear only Japanese music in this movie set in Japan or how people actually run out of ammo frequently while shooting their guns. I think it’s a very well done movie over all.
It also gave me a little bit of a Cyberpunk 2077 vibe but I’m not sure if that’s just cause of the neon lights, the protagonist with a time limit cause they’re dying thanks to a mission gone wrong, the powerful Japanese as the antagonist or because there’s someone named V. Also fun but unrelated: BAND-MAID are in this!! My favorite rock band!!!
Unlike the other comment on this film, I don't think this film has weak directing as it is difficult to direct Jackie Chan and his Stunt team but Benny Chan does a very good job in my opinion. This is the fifth film in the Police Story franchise and I have to admit it might be my second favourite after Police Story 2. Jackie Chan (Inspector Chan) gives one of his best performances in my opinion as you believe this depiction of the super cop who has lost all confidence in himself as a person and as a police officer, that's why Nicholas Tse (Zheng Xiaofeng) playing opposite to Jackie is perfect as the character brings the Super Cop back during the film.
I would be amiss if I don't mention the villains in this film who are just a group of teens who are obsessed with video games and all have problems with their parents, but the stand out is Daniel Wu (Joe Kwan) who is just so perfect in this film as you see how everything in his world has made him the way he is and yeah I can for sure see why he is a star who like Jackie broke into American films as he is a really great actor.
Seriously I love this film and its so difficult to find a copy of, I bought a Blu Ray but it was a horrid dub and thankfully found a DVD copy in a charity shop with the original audio. Seek this movie out if you want to see the Super Cop in a modern world and see some absolutely amazing stunt work and fight scenes, but those are second to a super solid story and strong directing with the JC Stunt Team.
Just remember.......SUBS OVER DUBS!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the weirdest and most unique films I’ve ever seen. Definitely a trip, hard to call it an enjoyable one but certainly one I look back on with a sense of respect.
Oh yeah Adam Driver shows his bare butt and a wooden baby is carried into the super bowl halftime show by a flock of drones. Trippy.
A little overlong perhaps but still a good film. The ending, while expected, still proved satisfying.
So this is basically Guardians of The Galaxy, with a robot instead of Groot, a kid instead of raccoon, and the girl is not green. 8 Starlords out of 10.
Super fun watch.. woulda made a great tv series
[Stockholm FF] Inspired in a true story, the director constructs a satire on Europe and its policy of refugees. The protagonist, bearer of a tattoo that becomes an artistic work, finds himself imprisoned in the midst of an apparent freedom. Although the vision of this wealthy and unscrupulous Europe is simplistic, the development of the story works thanks to a successful balance between satire and realism.
It was a good movie when it came out but it's only gotten better over the years... Why? Because it's like a Nostradamus documentary!
Video calls, teleconferencing, self-driving cars, Arnie the politician, tablets, Alexa-style assistants, YouTube-like instruction videos... Not to mention the push toward veganism, pacifism, self-help, mindfulness... The danger of viruses and body fluids... And the most frightening, the reduction of music to emotionless shortened pop song jingos...!
It is quite staggering. And it doesn't paint a great picture for all its 'utopia' portrayal.
As an action film, it's very good because of Snipes' martial arts and Stallone's comedy, as well as his excellent pairing with Sandra Bullock.
Gets better with age and I hope they attempt a sequel.
Two thoughts stay with you - how do the seashells work... And which version did you get, the badly-overdubbed Pizza Hut or the real Taco Bell?
8/10
"I Saw the Devil" is a film that grabs you by the throat from the first minute and will never let go. Choi Min-sik makes you never want to look away from the screen. The way he portrays serial killer Jang Kyung-chul is out of this world. He owns the role.
On the other side we have Kim Jee-Woon regular Lee Byung-hun as Kim Soo-hun, a secret agent who want revenge for the murder of his pregnant fiancee. After the first meeting between the two, he stalks his pray and the cat and mouse game begins.
For more than 2 hours I was glued to the screen. This beautifully shot film with brutal gore and action, which made me look away from the screen at times because of how invested I was, flew by.
I'm still processing what I just saw....All I can say is, don't skip this one!
I'd call this a very "austere" horror flick, which might be attributed to the Russian style: very too the point, no over the top gun battles, all contained within a single military base, no "global conspiracy" involved, a single unexpected twist, and an end that ties all loose knots ... basically all meat and no grizzle.
It was entertaining, and that's all you need out of a movie.
I saw the best review: “No country for Spider-Man”. That’s it. It was good but not spectacular despite the brilliant cast.
I wish more musicals would get released like this after their runtime in theaters for people like me who have no way to see them live.
Despite a moment or two that I felt strained my suspension of disbelief, and wishing the musical moments would let the "real world" show through intermittently instead of only at the end, I think this movie deserves the "Totally Ninja!" rating.
If a film can keep me glued to the screen like this one did, it can't be anything less!
Had a heck of a time finding this on Trakt. Delta Airlines listed it as "Can't Stop Dancing"; the on-screen titles in the film itself said "Can't Stop the Dancing" (emphasis added); IMDB, TMDB, and Trakt all have it as "Dance With Me"…
I found the movie looking for a rom com, but find much more. The writing, the thoughts, the hardship and improvement of the main characters. It's bold alright, that's true.
Its like an instant classic. The type whose quotes will be used in Instagram posts even 10-15 years later.
this movie is amazing. the cast works so well together and it actually feels real. the other netflix romcoms could never.
paul is so cute. he's a great friend and his relationship with ellie was so fun to watch as it developed. the scene with paul and ellie's dad where the dad's speaking chinese to him was wonderful too. i don't know why it hit me but it did.
the scene where they're in the water was beautiful. this movie is gonna get quoted for years to come, i'm calling it
even though i did ship astra and ellie, the ending was satisfying and actually really cute.
thanks netflix for giving us a cute lesbian (kinda) movie. please continue to make movies like these instead of movies like the kissing booth. sorry not sorry
I've seen some super mixed reviews on this and that kinda bums me out. I loved this movie and I've been thinking about it all day. Leah Lewis does a great job playing Ellie and I really liked her character. I do feel like this shouldn't really be labeled as romance, it's much more about friendship and acceptance.
