An exquisite cast delivering lackluster performances (except for Michelle Pfeiffer at the end of the movie). A wasted opportunity to make an old classic shine again.
What made the book so great was that all the clues were given to you so you could take your time and try to solve it. However, this style won't work for a two hour long movie so the right call was made to turn the focus away from all the extremely complex clues and towards the characters and their back stories. The filmmakers didn't fully commit to this however, so what you're left with is an unfocused, unoriginal and badly paced mess which fails to capture any of the charm of the earlier movie or the book.
Notable Parts
- The performances of Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench and Daisy Ridley
- The beautiful period costumes and sets
- Impressive and creative cinematography, even if it is a bit unnecessary at times
Worst Parts
- The adaptation work, although it is evident they tried and had good ideas
- Unnecessary action that makes badly paced
- The dead squirrel that was glued to Branagh's face
- Terrible cgi
While nothing special, its at least enjoyable, although I would never recommend it or watch it again.
Advancements in technology alone never justify remaking a classic. If you're not going to make it better, make it differently. If you're not going to make it differently, don't remake it.
Im not a fan of period pieces, nor ghost stories, but i am a fan of mysteries. This film went by quicker than expected, and the mystery kept me hooked throughout. I never guessed who it was nor how things were done. It was overall a good movie. I will say, Tina Fey took me out of it a bit. Its hard to take her seriously in a role period, let alone a period role. Nevertheless, a good movie and an even better mystery.
Probably the best Branagh Poirot movie so far, mostly by virtue of not having the ugly, plastic sheen of the previous 2 movies. This one captures the old school filmmaking style Branagh is going for pretty authentically, and the visuals are easily the best thing about this movie. With that being said, the final result is still nothing to write home about. While the characters and acting are generally ok, the dialogue and mystery are once again unexciting and lack a distinct artistic flair. Add to that a sluggish pace and poorly executed touches of horror (really unnecessary if you’re not willing to lean into that influence in a creative way), and you have a movie that is overall pretty forgettable and dull.
4.5/10
"Scary stories make life less scary."
Haven't watched Murder on the Orient Express yet and thought Death on the Nile was boring but I really enjoyed A Haunting in Venice.
It's very slow but kept me glued to the screen the whole time. Good story and mystery but the characters are what drives this, they're interesting. The interview format got a bit repetitive at some point but it works for the most part and it elevates Hercule Poirot as a character every time. I didn't predict the culprit but the clues were definitely there! A criticism; I'll be vague but the mystery solver felt a bit overpowered and the problem solving unearned.
The supernatural and horror twist is what really elevated the experience for me, we even got a few jumpscares and it's spooky. The palazzo set is perfection and the dark, rainy, stormy atmosphere is always a great choice. The imagery is absolutely stunning, amazing lighting, stylish camerawork and great cast.
Worth watching in a theater but at the same time I would save this for the Halloween season—i'd consider it a Halloween movie. I had no expectations going in but overall this was a good murder mystery!
Fuck yeah, finally! The Saw is back with a mainline entry that focuses on the man the legend John Kramer himself and provides all the glorious torture porn, the traps, the blood and the gore you love.
An enjoyable Saw movie that humanizes Kramer more so that you understand the choices he's making. The ending had the typical Saw twist, and it honestly made a lot of sense as to how everything worked out.
Sandra Bullock is enjoyable in everything she does, and the rest of the cast (especially Trevante Rhodes and John Malkovich) sold the hell out of what little plot there was here, but it was all just a bit too surface level. There was no real explanation for any of it, which is deeply frustrating after you've spent two hours watching something. I don't need everything neatly wrapped up in a bow at the end, but this kind of felt entirely unwrapped. Watchable but certainly not re-watchable.
This is a masterclass in how to portray subjectivity. I was absolutely immersed in this character and could feel the amazement, horror, and divided feelings that he was going through. The directing was phenomenal and deserves much praise.
Margot Robbie is a gift to cinema. This movie is a gift to our society. It's enjoyable and fun but part way through it become a pretty good commentary on our society and how men and women treat each other. It talks about capitalism, consumerism, feminism, the patriarchy, men's mental health, and how wrong we get the simple act of living sometimes. I'm sure there's gonna be people who think this is ultra woke, but maybe (and ironically), that's some people need.
I struggled with the start, she simply was a bit too over the top. But it constantly gets better and ends up being a memorable experience.
This is one of those unique movies that has encapsulated every little detail of what you know about coming of age stories about love and friendships. Fill with a vivid youthful adventurous storyline that trough time, became a mature representation of the realities most true love stories end up being. Fantastic slice of life.
IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!! The ending is heartbreaking but I had a great time watching. Just when I thought I knew where it was going I was wrong. I don't usually cry watching movies or shows but this is definitely an exception.
If you want to watch a heartbreaking coming-of-age story this is perfect. I really recommend you watch it. it was exceptional.
This a strange little story. Although it was following a coming of age plot, it seemed to go about it in many fragmented directions. And, because of that, it felt overly long getting to its end. The artwork was skillful, though, filled with the subtle nuance of human motion. I give this film a 6 (fair) out of 10. [Anime Coming of Age Story]
It's a nice movie, although I think music in anime plays a big role and that was clearly lacking in this movie. Also, the story ends with some questions unanswered which is a shame, but other than that it's a great movie, worth watching!
Cute and entertaining, but has nothing special and adds nothing to the genre
I feel like something is missing in this movie. Perhaps beacuse of the novel, even though the movie should explain why her auntie know so much, and it was the big deal of that painting.
And what Makoto meant when she said "I'll come running" to Chiaki after he told he would be waiting her in the future.
I want my own Jennifer Lawrence to pull me out of my shell and show me the ropes of life while also inadvertently becoming a close friend of mine in the process. Not a bad film by any stretch of the imagination and there were many moments that got an audible laugh out of me, it just lacks the completeness of the raunchy comedy classics it's emulating to swing for a higher score. It's still a fun time with enough heart to see you through to the finale, perfect streaming fodder when it inevitably makes its way there.
No Hard Feelings offers laughs above most raunchy teen comedies. The film is mostly well written, and Jennifer Lawrence feels at home in this role. It's good for a watch, but probably not two.
Double the fun, double the action and double the trouble with one more detective making it more dynamic. With your regular funny family squabbles to laugh at times, taking down the bad guys with a very similar theme as the first movie, but with a more straight forward plot than the first one, making the previous feel more grounded and matured in comparison since neither the previous writer and director worked on this one.
It's rare to see a sequel as good as the original. Confidential Assignment 2 was not only at par with the original, it surpassed it. This is more fun to watch. Have more action scenes. And, much solid plot. If they are going to release another sequel, they raised the standards too high with this release.
What I miss with Western movies: a solid plot, a serious story, but still can make you laugh because the comedy parts were natural. Glad to see the Koreans are sticking to that formula instead of following the footsteps of Hollywood.
Well done, great acting from all the actors, the staff, the director, writer, and editing team.
Didn't know Yoona was in this so that was a surprising bonus. :D
Besides that, well crafted action sequences; decent plot and character development and it didn't really paint any of the koreas black or white... I kinda want a sequel now and considering it did pretty good at the box office this might actually be a possibility!
Dozens of good police officers will not return home to their families just because their colonel worked for a drug lord.
Directed by long time Marvel stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, this is what a Michael Bay movie with a competent director would look like. Still has some shortcomings as a movie, but the actual cinematography/camerawork highlights a substantial difference in Bay's inability to frame a scene and properly stress importance.
I would love to see some more fleshed out characters and something beyond just the action, but it's well executed for it is.
I still don’t understand why the Indian ex-special-force who is pretty skilled didn’t try to extract the boy on his own. Hiring a third party then piss them off by not paying them is a bit stupid.
Loved the camera work and the numerous fist and gun fight scenes. The slap on the face of the child-soldier was hilarious :joy:.
I didn’t care too much about the ex-wife and the sick then dead boy backstory. Why are these kind of character always half-alcoholic half-suicidal because they lost a member of their family?!?
All in all an entertaining action movie if you don’t pay too much attention to the script and the use of many cliché .
Much better than 6 Underground which was all fine action and no plot. A plus is when you have a good cast, nice locations and fine action, and no Michael Bay.
I wouldn’t mind seeing more Tyler Rake movies. Hemsworth kicks ass as him. It’s probably his best role next to Thor. He takes on many at once in John Wick like fashion.
